Don't Remember, Just Remind Yourself... DO THE WORK - Day 104

    enNovember 09, 2016
What is a creative way to engage with quotes?
How often should you review your collected quotes?
What technology can replace traditional file folders?
How does Boomerang enhance quote retention?
What is the purpose of regularly reviewing quotes?

    Podcast Summary

    • Regularly review and engage with quotes for lasting impactTo keep quotes meaningful, organize them, review regularly, and engage actively to apply their insights to your life

To keep quotes meaningful and make them more than just fleeting inspirations, it's essential to find creative ways to reintroduce them into your daily life. The easiest method is to print and display them, but this approach has limitations. Instead, consider using a method inspired by David Allen's Getting Things Done process. First, collect all your quotes and organize them in a system, such as a digital note-taking app or a physical notebook. Next, review them regularly, perhaps weekly or monthly. During your review sessions, reflect on each quote's meaning and how it applies to your life. You can also connect quotes on similar themes or ideas to deepen your understanding. Second, create a system for actively engaging with your quotes. For example, you can use a random quote generator to surprise yourself with a new quote each day. Alternatively, you can create a quote journal and write down your thoughts and reactions to each quote. By regularly reviewing and engaging with your quotes, you'll keep their meaning fresh in your mind and apply their insights to your life. This approach ensures that the impact of these quotes extends beyond the initial reading experience.

    • Replicating the David Allen system with digital toolsUse Evernote for digital notes and Boomerang for Gmail reminders to replicate the David Allen system's organization and inspiration in a paperless workspace

The David Allen system, which originally used manila file folders for organizing tasks and reminders, can be replicated using modern technology like Evernote and Boomerang for Gmail. Instead of physically placing items in file folders, users can create digital notes in Evernote, set reminders, and revisit them at designated times. This method allows for the randomness and inspiration of the original system while maintaining a paperless workspace. For example, users can save quotes, articles, or inspiring images as Evernotes and set reminders to revisit them at specific dates. When the reminder goes off, the user can open the associated note and be reminded of the content. This simple yet effective technique helps keep important information easily accessible and at the forefront of one's mind.

    • Use Gmail and Boomerang to remember important quotes or informationSet emails with important quotes or info to reappear in your inbox at specific times for easy access and review

You can use technology, specifically Gmail and Boomerang, to help improve your memory and retain important quotes or information. By composing a new email to yourself, typing in the quote or information, and using Boomerang to send it later, you can set the message to appear in your inbox at a specific time or on a recurring basis. This can serve as a nice surprise and reminder, helping you to stay engaged with the information and utilize it more effectively. You can even set the message to be sent randomly for an added element of surprise. The goal is to make the most of the information you come across and avoid forgetting it after a single encounter.
