DTW95: I Don't Have All the Answers... DO THE WORK - Day 95

    enOctober 31, 2016

    Podcast Summary

    • Test ideas before implementationThoroughly test ideas through market testing and seeking advice from experts before making major transitions to ensure informed decisions and a smoother process

When facing the question of which direction to take after a major transition, it's important to test your ideas thoroughly before implementation. This can be done through small-scale testing in the market, as well as seeking advice from trusted contacts and industry experts. By gathering insights from those who have already experienced successes and challenges in similar areas, you can gain a clearer understanding of potential positives, negatives, and potential roadblocks. This approach allows for a more informed decision-making process and sets the foundation for a smoother transition.

    • Learn from others in and outside your industryReach out, observe, and seek advice from successful individuals and businesses to gain insights and adapt best practices for your own business

Learning from others, whether they're in your industry or not, can provide valuable insights for your business. Reach out to people who are excelling in their fields, even if you're not directly competing with them. Offer value and ask specific questions. Additionally, observe successful businesses outside of your industry and identify practices that can be adapted to your own. Lastly, seek advice from respected peers in your sector as a sounding board and for an insanity check. Remember, you can borrow ideas, Frankenstein them together, and put your unique spin on them to make them your own.

    • Discussing ideas with others clarifies and refines themSharing ideas with respected individuals in your field leads to valuable feedback, new ideas, and improved plans. Verbalizing and receiving feedback on ideas can result in clearer, more actionable plans and a greater understanding of their potential value and viability.

Discussing ideas with others can help clarify and refine them. Sometimes, when we keep ideas in our heads, they can become vague and hard to communicate effectively. But when we share our ideas with respected individuals in our field and engage in a productive dialogue, we can gain valuable feedback, spur new ideas, and improve upon our initial thoughts. This process of verbalizing and receiving feedback on our ideas can lead to more specific and actionable plans, and can result in a greater understanding of the potential value and viability of our projects. Through this exchange of ideas, we can experience a synergistic effect, where one idea builds upon another, leading to innovative and impactful solutions.

    • Seek outside perspectives and adviceModel successful approaches, seek constructive feedback, and share ideas early on to increase chances of success

It's important to seek outside perspectives and advice when planning and starting a new project. When we become too focused on our own ideas, we can lose sight of the bigger picture and potentially create something that may not resonate with the world. By looking to those who have successfully done what we're aiming to do, modeling their approaches, and seeking constructive feedback from trusted advisors, we can adapt our plans and increase the chances of success. Additionally, sharing our ideas early on can save us time, money, and effort in the long run. In essence, humility and openness to feedback can lead to better outcomes.

What Did You Do About It?

Next time you want to blame someone else for being ____ ask yourself - what did I do about it?  We are quick to blame others when we could have done more or done things differently.  It's often partially our own fault, more than we would like to admit. Admit it and be better.
