Jocko Underground: Should You Improve Your Weakness? Or Capitalize on Your Strengths?

    enJune 05, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Balancing strengths and weaknesses for personal growthFocus on both strengths and weaknesses for optimal personal growth. Don't abandon weak areas completely, but also don't neglect your strengths. Aim for balance to maximize potential.

Focusing on both strengths and weaknesses is essential for personal growth. While it's important to invest time in areas where we excel, we shouldn't neglect our weaknesses. By focusing on our strengths, we can experience exponential growth and open up new opportunities. However, abandoning our weaknesses completely can limit our potential. For instance, if someone is not good at writing but excels in math, they should not give up on writing entirely. Instead, they should continue to work on it, even if they choose a career in a math-oriented field. Similarly, if someone is naturally lean and an endurance athlete, they shouldn't force themselves to become a powerlifter against their nature. Instead, they should aim to be strong in their unique way. In essence, we should strive for a balance between improving our strengths and addressing our weaknesses to maximize our potential.

    • Recognize and address weaknessesAcknowledge and work on improving areas of struggle for better overall performance and well-roundedness in various aspects of life.

While we may have natural abilities or strengths, it's important not to neglect areas where we may struggle. These critical skills or abilities, such as lifting or jiu jitsu techniques, can make a significant difference in various aspects of life. For instance, being a good runner doesn't mean abandoning weightlifting or other forms of strength training. Similarly, being a poor wrestler doesn't mean avoiding learning the bottom game, as there will always be someone better than us. Moreover, some skills, like writing, are essential in various aspects of life, from job applications to military evaluations. Neglecting these skills can lead to significant disadvantages. It's essential to acknowledge our weaknesses and work on improving them, even if we don't enjoy or find them easy. Personally, I disliked being on the bottom in jiu jitsu when I started, but I realized that it was a critical aspect of the game. By focusing on improving my bottom game, I became more confident and well-rounded in my jiu jitsu practice. This experience taught me the importance of addressing weaknesses and not shying away from challenging areas.

    • Embrace opportunities to learn and grow from weaknessesDon't dismiss weaknesses as inherent flaws, but rather areas for improvement through dedicated practice and learning.

Our perceived weaknesses may not be due to a lack of natural ability, but rather a lack of dedicated practice. It's easy to shy away from things we're not good at, especially from a leadership perspective. However, hiding from these challenges won't help us improve. Instead, we should embrace the opportunity to learn and grow by asking for help and putting in the necessary effort. The jiu jitsu black belt who isn't a good striker is a prime example of this. He hasn't dedicated enough time to striking training, so it's no wonder he struggles. The same concept applies to public speaking, bench pressing, or running. With the right amount of practice, most people can become competent in these areas. So, the next time you identify a weakness, don't write it off as something you'll never be good at. Instead, consider how much time and effort you've invested in it and be open to learning and improving.

    • Natural abilities vs developed skillsBoth natural abilities and skills developed through practice contribute to our overall abilities and should be focused on for personal growth.

Our natural abilities and comfort zones are shaped by experiences and practice. While some skills come naturally to us due to our genetic makeup, others are developed through consistent exposure and training. For instance, being comfortable in the water is a skill that comes naturally to those who have grown up around it, while it may be a struggle for those who have had little to no experience with it. Similarly, someone who has spent years working physically may find other physical activities easier due to their prior experience, even if they don't come naturally to them. Therefore, it's essential to focus on both our natural abilities and the skills we can develop through practice. By doing so, we can broaden our horizons and become well-rounded individuals.

    • Understanding the difference between training and performingDuring training, focus on improving weaknesses. During performance, play to your strengths. Distinguish between the two to maximize success.

There are differences between training and performing, and it's essential to understand which one you're doing in order to be successful. During training, you can identify and work on your weaknesses, but during performance, it's crucial to play to your strengths. People who grow up in large families, for instance, may have certain personality traits that give them an edge in certain situations due to their upbringing. However, if you lack experience or training in a particular area, it can be a weakness during performance. It's essential to distinguish between training and performance to make the most of both and improve overall.
