MrBeast: How to capture the attention of billions

    enJanuary 30, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Using psychological tactics to create value and build a followingBy investing time, effort, and money into content, creators can increase viewer engagement and loyalty, leading to monetization opportunities.

Mister Beast, a young and wildly popular YouTuber, has become a marketing phenomenon by using psychological tactics to capture the attention of billions and turn many of them into customers. He uses the input bias, which means that the more time, effort, and money people put into something, the more they value it. By investing significantly in his YouTube content, Mister Beast creates a sense of value for his viewers, making them more likely to engage with and support his brand. His success story serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to build a following and monetize it effectively. To learn more about this and other marketing strategies, check out the "d to c pod" podcast.

    • People value things more when they see significant effort put inShowing effort and dedication can increase perceived value, even if the actual value is questionable

People value things more when they perceive that significant effort or input has been put into creating them. This is known as the "input bias" or "sunk cost fallacy." This bias can be leveraged to capture attention and make people value content, products, or services more, even if the actual value is questionable. This was effectively used by Mister Beast in his early viral videos, where he spent hours creating seemingly mundane content, making viewers believe that his dedication and effort resulted in something worth watching. This bias can be applied in various ways, such as in marketing, where showcasing the time and resources invested in a product or service can increase its perceived value. This principle can be used in different industries and contexts to make a stronger connection with the audience and create a sense of appreciation for the value being offered.

    • Using Input Bias and Costly Signaling for SuccessPrepare extensively for content creation, use costly signaling to capture attention, and provide personalized customer service for growth

Creating engaging content and building a strong following involves more than just putting out consistent content. Mr. Beast, a successful YouTuber, uses the tactic of input bias to prepare extensively for his episodes. But he also applies unique strategies like costly signaling, where he gives away large sums of money in his videos, to capture attention and build a loyal audience. For businesses, providing personalized customer service is crucial, but keeping up with customer information can be challenging. HubSpot's Service Hub offers a solution with AI-powered tools to help businesses better connect with customers, anticipate their needs, and provide better service, leading to increased retention and revenue. Mr. Beast's success with brand deals came when he used the principle of costly signaling to give away larger sums of money, making his videos more engaging and attention-grabbing. This strategy, along with input bias and personalized customer service, can help creators and businesses stand out and grow their following.

    • The Power of Costly SignalingCostly signaling can significantly impact perceptions through demonstrating value or commitment via substantial actions or resources.

Costly signaling, or the act of demonstrating value or commitment through significant actions or resources, can significantly influence how people perceive individuals, brands, or situations. This concept was illustrated in various ways during the discussion. For instance, a test conducted on Nudge showed that displaying an ad on a billboard made people twice as likely to listen to the show, demonstrating the power of costly signaling in advertising. Brands like Patagonia have also employed this strategy by refusing to sell to companies damaging the environment, signaling their commitment to sustainability. Another example from history comes from World War 2, where John Cunningham, a night fighter, became a celebrated hero due to the costly signals of his exceptional eyesight. The Germans believed Cunningham's sunglasses and carrot consumption were the reasons for his success, even though it was actually the new radar system that made the difference. Similarly, mister beast, a popular YouTuber, has used costly signaling effectively in his videos by giving away large sums of money. The significant costs behind his videos make them more valuable in the eyes of viewers. This strategy has been a consistent element in his successful content. In essence, costly signaling can create a strong impression and change perceptions, making it an essential concept to understand in various aspects of life.

    • Understanding Costly Signaling and Juxtaposition in Mister Beast's YouTube SuccessMister Beast's success on YouTube is due to his investment in costly signaling and use of juxtaposition. He signals authenticity through heavy investments and creates intrigue with contrasts between relatable language and extraordinary giveaways.

Mister Beast's success on YouTube can be measured by his understanding and application of costly signaling and juxtaposition. He invests heavily in his videos to signal his commitment and authenticity. This investment, whether it's in time, money, or resources, makes his content more valuable to viewers. Additionally, Mister Beast uses juxtaposition to create intrigue and engagement. Inexpensive camera equipment, relatable language, and extraordinary giveaways are all part of this contrast that hooks viewers. It's this combination of costly signaling and juxtaposition that sets Mister Beast apart and makes his videos unique and captivating.

    • The Power of ContrastUsing contrast in content can increase engagement and make messages more memorable, as demonstrated in a study where participants were 24% more likely to continue reading contrasting stories.

Contrast plays a significant role in capturing attention and making content more engaging. This was demonstrated by ad executive Rosa Reeves in the 1950s when she helped increase donations for a homeless man by adding the words "it is springtime" to his sign. This principle, known as the contrast effect, was also used effectively by popular YouTuber mister Beast in his videos. To test this further, a study was conducted where two similar stories were presented to groups of people, the only difference being the use of contrast in one story. The results showed that participants were 24% more likely to want to keep reading the contrast version, demonstrating the power of this psychological principle. Advertisers, storytellers, and content creators can leverage the contrast effect to make their messages more impactful and memorable.

    • Mister Beast uses psychological biases to engage audienceYouTube creator Mister Beast uses loss aversion, curiosity gap, social proof, and signaling to capture and maintain viewer attention, demonstrating the power of understanding psychological biases in audience engagement.

Mister Beast, a popular YouTube creator, uses various psychological biases and tactics to engage and retain his audience. He leverages loss aversion by creating a sense of urgency and fear of missing out to encourage subscriptions. He also uses the curiosity gap to draw viewers in with intriguing introductions. Additionally, he employs social proof and signaling through public donations to encourage generosity and competition among his viewers. By understanding and utilizing these deeply embedded psychological biases, Mister Beast has mastered the art of capturing and maintaining attention, and his approach can be applied to any industry to effectively engage audiences.

    • Authenticity and unique attributes make a brand stand outBrands can showcase authenticity and unique attributes to make them more memorable and valuable, through various means like aging process, hiring ex-offenders, or costly signals.

Showcasing authenticity and unique attributes can make a brand or individual stand out and gain more attention and value. This can be achieved through various means, such as a whiskey brand highlighting the exact aging process, a marketing agency hiring ex-offenders, or a company like Patagonia making costly signals by giving away their business to charities. While not all of us have the means to make such grand gestures, we can still apply this concept in smaller ways, like declaring the time and effort put into creating a product or offering incentives for viral content creation. By triggering the contrast effect, these actions make the brand or individual more memorable and valuable in the eyes of the audience.

The speech that put a man on the moon

The speech that put a man on the moon
It seems inevitable to us now that someone would eventually land on the moon. But back in 1962 that wasn’t so certain. With the ever-rising costs of the Apollo space program, and a huge amount of tax needed from each US citizen, JFK struggled to convince people. That was until one speech on a sunny day in September. This speech went down in history, persuading the nation to reach for the moon. In today’s Nudge, I explain the psychological tactics Kennedy used to make that speech so compelling. 6 Ways to Grow Your Social Media For Free [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

6 Ways to Grow Your Social Media For Free [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

Are you looking to expand your social media presence but wondering where to start? Join Rob in this new episode as he discusses how you can organically grow your social media platform. Learn the importance of ensuring you have profiles on each and every social media platform available, how to post consistent content as well as how to get the social media algorithms on your side.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Make sure you have active profiles on each of the available social media platforms. Whilst you may not spend a lot of your time on some of the channels so as to avoid spreading yourself too thin, you should have them all set up. The reason being is to appeal to a wide demographic of potential customers. Profiles on some platforms rank really well on Google, therefore the more social media accounts you set up, the higher you rank on Google.

    • Start posting consistent content on your favourite social media platform. You want to get steady and consistent on your main channels. Repurpose content across all your platforms. You will only need to record the content once, and you are able to utilise this across your platforms to get maximum reach for that one piece of content.

    • Whilst it is beneficial to repurpose the same content across each platform you are on, it may not be the exact fit for each social media profile. For example, performing a sound bite on a TikTok may not translate well to your Facebook profile. The apex of being a social media influencer is being able to create and post unique content for each different social media platform.

    • Some social media platforms’ algorithms will only reach up to 3% of your audience. This essentially means that there will be large amounts of your followers that will never see your content. Getting them to view your content on other platforms will increase their chance of engaging with you. Things such as posting at different times and changing your background all help to reawaken the algorithm and reach those dormant followers.

    BEST MOMENTS

“The peak of social media dominance is unique content per platform.”

“People find social media, content marketing and building a personal brand really overwhelming.”

“Some people say, well what’s the point in having people follow you on more than one social media account.”

Employee Engagement for Superior Customer Experience Management

Employee Engagement for Superior Customer Experience Management
The hardest thing for competitors to copy is the customer experience you create. And engaged employees are the most dynamic and influential force in creating superior customer experiences. While 80% of executives say they want to use customer experience management (CEM) as a form of differentiation in 2010, only 11% would call their CEM approach “very disciplined”. This mis-match of intentions and capabilities reveals a huge opportunity for sustainable differentiation – if your company is one of the few that is willing to adopt a disciplined approach. Employee engagement correlates with customer engagement. Examples from JetBlue, Applied Materials, EMC. From the blog Customer Experience Optimization: at http://clearaction.biz/blog (7:10).
