Not So Scary Change... DO THE WORK - DAY 439

    enOctober 11, 2017

    Podcast Summary

    • Fear of the unknown keeps us from changeEmbrace change to discover unexpected benefits, the pain of staying in a less than ideal situation can outweigh the perceived pain of making a change.

Our reluctance to change can often keep us stuck in less than ideal situations. We may cling to the familiar, even when it causes frustration or difficulties, because the unknown can seem scary and uncertain. However, as the speaker's experience with Firefox illustrates, making a change can sometimes lead to unexpected benefits and improvements. The transition may be smoother than anticipated, and we may wonder why we didn't make the change sooner. It's important to remember that the unknown may bring unexpected positives and that the pain of staying in a less than ideal situation can outweigh the perceived pain of making a change. So, instead of avoiding change, we should be open to exploring new options and embracing the potential benefits that come with them.

    • Fear of the unknown keeps us from changingDespite our fears, most changes aren't as difficult as we imagine and can lead to improvements in our lives

Our reluctance to change, whether it's with people, foods, technology, or habits, often stems from fear of the unknown. We tend to imagine that change will be much worse than it actually is. But in reality, most changes are not as difficult or problematic as we anticipate. In fact, they can lead to improvements in our lives. So, when you identify something in your life that's not working well, consider making a change. The unfamiliar may seem daunting at first, but the experience of living through it is likely to be better than what you were doing before. Remember, be open to change and embrace the opportunities it brings.

What Did You Do About It?

Next time you want to blame someone else for being ____ ask yourself - what did I do about it?  We are quick to blame others when we could have done more or done things differently.  It's often partially our own fault, more than we would like to admit. Admit it and be better.

Preparing Students to Navigate Difficult Situations in the Classroom, a Conversation with Dr. Abby Ferber!

Discussing controversial, difficult topics in the classroom can lead to powerful insights and skill development; yet, too often, these conversations dissolve into unproductive debates and shouting matches, undermining learning and damaging the classroom environment.

Alone, faculty and teachers may not be able to navigate these difficult moments. Yet, if we teach students the skills and capacities to notice their hot buttons, avoid knee-jerk reactions, de-escalate triggered emotions, and intentionally choose how to respond, together, we can turn triggering events into productive learning moments.

Come join me and Dr. Abby Ferber as we explore practical strategies and tips to proactively prepare students to more effectively engage each other during challenging, difficult conversations in the classroom.
