Nutrition Expert On The Truth Behind Air Fryers, Nespresso Pods, Tea Bags, Rotisserie Chicken, and Ingredient Labels At Grocery Stores with Courtney Swan of Realfoodology

    enDecember 18, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Empower Yourself with Food KnowledgeBe informed about food labeling and the food industry to make healthier choices, even when eating out or consuming fast food. Read ingredient labels carefully and consider the impact of processed foods on health.

Knowledge is power when it comes to making informed decisions about the food we consume. Our guest, Courtney Swan, also known as Real Foodology, is an integrative nutritionist and real food activist on a mission to educate consumers about the truth behind food labeling and the food industry. She encourages us to be our own advocates and make the best choices possible, even when it comes to fast food or dining out. Some controversial topics discussed include the impact of processed foods on health, the use of banned ingredients in the US versus Europe, and the importance of reading ingredient labels carefully. Courtney also shares tips for ordering healthier options at restaurants and making healthier food choices more accessible and affordable. Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of being informed and taking control of what we put in our bodies.

    • Growing up and the Impact of Food PerceptionsEarly food experiences shape our health and understanding of nutrition. Unhealthy diets can lead to negative consequences, but discovering the importance of nutrition can inspire a lifelong passion.

The way we grow up perceives food and nutrition can significantly impact our health and wellbeing later in life. The speaker grew up with healthier food options at home but longed for the junk food her friends had. In college, she experienced the negative effects of an unhealthy diet and was introduced to the concept of nutrition through a book her mother sent her. This sparked a deep passion for nutrition, leading her to pursue a master's degree in the field while continuing to work in music. The transition from summer to fall serves as a reminder of the importance of nourishing our bodies with proper nutrition, just as we transition our wardrobes for the changing seasons.

    • Discover Comfortable and Stylish Shoes with Vionic's Technology and Green Chef's Nutritionist-Approved Meals for the HolidaysVionic shoes provide comfortable options with their exclusive Vio Motion Technology, while Green Chef simplifies eating clean during the holidays with nutritious meals and various dietary preferences.

Vionic shoes offer comfortable and stylish options for various occasions, backed by the brand's exclusive Vio Motion Technology. The shoes cater to different lifestyles and come with a 30-day guarantee. Meanwhile, Green Chef simplifies eating clean during the holidays with nutritionist-approved recipes featuring fresh, organic ingredients and various dietary preferences. Courtney Swan started sharing her nutrition knowledge on social media around 2011, initially through blogging and later evolving to Instagram under the name Real Foodology. Back then, there was a curious and excited energy around the information she shared, while now there's a skeptical energy that encourages questioning everything. Both Vionic shoes and Green Chef aim to make life easier and healthier in their respective ways.

    • Understanding Nutrition Regulation in the USDespite challenges, individuals must educate themselves and advocate for healthier food options due to limited regulation and potential health risks from certain ingredients

Navigating nutrition and health information in today's world can be challenging compared to the past due to increased anonymity and sensitivity on social media. However, despite the negative feedback, many people are still curious about nutrition and seeking guidance. A major issue is the lack of understanding about the regulation of food ingredients in the US, which requires individuals to be their own advocates for their health. Companies face significant hurdles in producing healthy foods due to lobbying, marketing budgets, and subsidies that make unhealthy ingredients cheap and accessible. Some ingredients banned in other countries, like dyes such as red 40 and yellow 5, have been linked to health issues like hyperactivity and potential cancer risks. It's crucial for individuals to educate themselves and advocate for healthier food options.

    • Power of consumer demand for healthier foodConsumers can influence food companies to improve ingredients by demanding better options. The example of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese shows this power, but American food culture's reliance on cheap, processed foods from the post-war era has led to health issues. It's essential to continue advocating for better food and educate ourselves on true food contents.

Individuals have the power to influence food companies to make healthier choices by demanding better ingredients. This was demonstrated through the example of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, which changed its formula in the US after a public campaign led by the Food Babe. However, the discussion also highlighted the concerning state of American food culture, as represented in a London food store, filled with unhealthy and processed foods that Americans may mistakenly believe are representative of their country. The roots of this issue can be traced back to the post-war era in America, where the priority was to create cheap, convenient foods for families, especially as women entered the workforce. Unfortunately, the long-term health consequences of these choices are now becoming apparent, and the privatized healthcare system in the US means that individuals bear the brunt of these health issues. It's crucial that we continue to demand better from food companies and educate ourselves about the true contents of the food we consume.

    • Preventable Diseases Linked to Poor DietsEating processed foods contributes to preventable diseases, but making meals from scratch with organic ingredients can be cost-effective and improve health for individuals and communities.

The foods we consume, particularly those containing high amounts of sugar and processed ingredients, are contributing to the rising rates of preventable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, even in children. These diseases could be prevented with lifestyle and diet changes. However, accessibility and affordability are significant barriers for many individuals. Despite the common belief that processed foods are cheaper, a study showed that buying organic ingredients and making meals from scratch is often more cost-effective. By supporting companies like Quince, which offer high-quality essentials at affordable prices, we can not only improve our own health but also help make these options more accessible to others. Ultimately, being mindful of what we eat and where our food comes from can lead to significant health benefits and a positive impact on our communities.

    • Luxury Healthy Living with Quince and Stella EatsQuince and Stella Eats offer affordable, convenient, and ethical options for healthy living, challenging the notion that luxury and affordability are mutually exclusive. Be aware of the real cost of food and support brands that prioritize health, ethics, and affordability.

It's possible to live a healthier lifestyle without compromising affordability or convenience. Quince is a brand that offers ethical and responsible manufacturing practices in premium fabrics and finishes, making luxury accessible to all. Stella Eats is another brand that provides grain-free, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly baking mixes with real ingredients, catering to health-conscious individuals without sacrificing taste. Both brands are on a mission to change the narrative around healthy eating and wellness. During the discussion, it was also highlighted that fast food may seem cheaper, but the real cost is often hidden in subsidies and the long-term impact on health. Canola oil, for instance, may be cheaper for companies to use due to subsidies, but its impact on the body can last for years. It's essential to be aware of the real cost of food and make informed decisions about the brands and products we support. Brands like Quince and Stella Eats demonstrate that it's possible to prioritize health, ethics, and affordability all at once.

    • Unknowingly Consuming Harmful Substances in FoodAvoid consuming harmful substances like glyphosate in food by eating organic and being aware of ingredients. Seed oils in salad dressings are inflammatory and should be avoided. Support regenerative farming practices to improve soil health and food quality.

Many people unknowingly consume harmful substances, such as glyphosate and seed oils, through their food, particularly salads. These substances can lead to health issues like autoimmune diseases, endocrine disruption, and cancer. Glyphosate, also known as Roundup, is the most widely used herbicide in the food system and is banned in organic food. It was initially used to kill pests but has since disrupted the soil ecosystem, leading to the depletion of topsoil and making it difficult to grow food in the future. Seed oils, which are commonly used in salad dressings, are inflammatory and can contribute to health problems. To avoid these substances, it's essential to eat organic and be aware of the ingredients in your food. Additionally, supporting regenerative farming practices can help improve the health of the soil and the food we consume.

    • Reviving Soil Health for Better Food and PlanetRegenerative farming practices improve soil health, increase nutrient content in food, and reduce health risks from pesticides.

The health of our soil plays a crucial role in the nutritional value of our food and the health of our planet. Traditional farming methods have led to a significant decrease in the nutrient content of our food due to depleted soil. Regenerative farming practices, on the other hand, help trap carbon in the soil, leading to healthier plants and, in turn, more nutritious food for us. Moreover, the overuse of pesticides in conventional farming, which contains glyphosate, has been linked to various health issues, including gut problems, hormonal imbalances, and endocrine disruption. The shift towards regenerative farming and supporting local farmers is a promising trend, and it's essential to be aware of where we put our money to make a difference. The documentary "Biggest Little Farm" is an inspiring example of regenerative farming practices and the importance of nurturing the soil ecosystem.

    • Supporting sustainable farming and healthy food choicesEducate yourself and others about healthy food systems, ask about cooking methods when dining out, and advocate for healthier options, despite financial constraints in the restaurant industry.

Supporting sustainable farming practices and healthy food choices can lead to a demand for change in the agricultural industry. This includes asking about cooking methods when dining out and advocating for healthier options. However, it's important to note that restaurants often face financial constraints when making such changes. It's not always possible to avoid all unhealthy oils when eating out, so finding a balance and doing the best we can is key. Educating ourselves and others about these issues is crucial in creating a shift towards healthier and more sustainable food systems.

    • Striving for Consistency in Healthy Habits: Perfection is Not the GoalBe informed about what we consume, mental health matters, and read labels carefully to avoid greenwashing in the food industry

While striving for consistency in healthy habits is important, it's essential to remember that perfection is not the goal. Mental health is just as significant as physical health, and it's crucial to be informed about what we're putting into our bodies. Greenwashing, or misleading labeling, is common in the food industry, and it's essential to read ingredient lists carefully. For instance, baby formula, despite being highly regulated, may contain seed oils and high fructose corn syrup, which are not the same as the natural components found in breast milk. Therefore, being informed and making conscious decisions based on our individual priorities is key.

    • Check labels carefully for unhealthy ingredients in baby formulaConsider if all ingredients on a baby formula label could be purchased at a grocery store and ask if grandma would recognize them as edible. Be cautious of hidden sugars.

The baby formula available on the market may contain unhealthy ingredients due to regulations and lack of affordable alternatives, making it essential for consumers to read and understand ingredient labels carefully. Longer labels with numerous ingredients are often a red flag for unhealthy products. A good rule of thumb is to consider if all the ingredients on a label could be purchased at a grocery store. Additionally, ask if your grandmother would recognize the ingredients as edible. Lastly, be cautious of hidden sugars in unexpected places like salad dressings and nut milks. While it's not always possible to avoid all unhealthy ingredients, being informed and mindful of your choices can make a significant difference for both you and your baby.

    • Considering Food and Drink Choices: More Than Meets the EyeBe mindful of the impact of seemingly healthy options like oat milk on blood sugar levels and consider the processing of ingredients in non-dairy creamers.

While it's important to consider the source of your food and drinks, such as the type of sugar or the origin of non-dairy milk options, it's essential to remember that many of these choices still have an impact on blood sugar levels. For instance, oat milk, which is popular for its sustainability and health benefits, is essentially a carbohydrate drink that can cause unnecessary spikes and crashes in blood glucose. Additionally, non-organic oat milk may contain pesticides like glyphosate. Brands like Chobani creamer also have highly processed ingredients that are difficult to find in their raw form and can contribute to inflammation and other health issues when consumed regularly. Ultimately, it's crucial to be aware of marketing schemes and prioritize whole, unprocessed foods for optimal health.

    • Understanding the Impact of Food and Cooking Practices on HealthBe aware of potential risks from additives and make informed choices based on individual needs and circumstances. Consider the historical context of food production and make mindful decisions for better health.

Our food and cooking practices can have a significant impact on our health. The use of certain additives, like Teflon in non-stick pans, can lead to the consumption of harmful chemicals. On the other hand, some natural foods, like raw dairy, can provide health benefits when sourced responsibly. It's essential to be aware of the potential risks and benefits and make informed choices based on individual needs and circumstances. For instance, raw dairy can be health-giving if obtained from a good source, while non-stick pans should be avoided due to the potential health hazards of their coatings. Additionally, it's crucial to consider the historical context of food production and consumption to make informed decisions. For example, the widespread adoption of pasteurization and homogenization of dairy may have led to the loss of beneficial enzymes and the need for raw dairy as an alternative. Overall, being mindful of our food sources and practices can help us make healthier choices and reduce potential health risks.

    • Household Items with Hidden Health RisksBe aware of potential health risks from nonstick cookware, air fryers, tea bags, and coffee pods. Opt for brands that claim to be free of harmful chemicals, use glass or stainless steel alternatives, and avoid heating plastic items to minimize exposure.

It's important to be informed about the potential health risks associated with certain household items, such as nonstick cookware, air fryers, tea bags, and coffee pods. While some products may be marketed as safe, they may contain harmful chemicals like PFAS, POFS, and PFOAS, which can have negative health effects and do not break down in the environment. To make safer choices, consider looking for brands that claim to be free of these chemicals, opting for glass or stainless steel alternatives, and doing research on tea brands that offer plastic-free tea bags. Additionally, avoid heating plastic items, including water bottles and coffee mugs, to minimize the leaching of harmful chemicals. While it can be overwhelming to make all the changes at once, every small step counts towards reducing your exposure to potentially harmful substances.

    • Supporting natural detoxificationSweat in a sauna, exercise, dry brush, be mindful of food sources, and avoid plastic containers, especially when heating food, to support natural detoxification and reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.

While we can't completely avoid all toxins in our environment, we can take small steps every day to support our body's natural detoxification process. This can include activities like sweating in a sauna, exercising, and dry brushing. Additionally, being mindful of the sources of our food and avoiding plastic containers, especially when heating food, can help reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals. The use of plastic, even if labeled as food-safe, can leach endocrine disruptors like phthalates into our food, which can have detrimental effects on our health, including infertility and cancer connections. So, make small changes like these to help mitigate the impact of toxins on your body.

    • Be Aware of Plastic in DisguiseRecognize potential plastic in seemingly paper or foil food packaging, avoid endocrine disruptors like phthalates, consider bringing own meals for fast food or choosing specific fast food options, and make informed choices about food and packaging.

We should be cautious about the use of plastic in food packaging, even if it appears to be paper or foil. The woman in the video discussed her concerns about plastic linings in seemingly paper products, such as Starbucks cups and takeout boxes from places like Whole Foods. She emphasized the potential presence of endocrine disruptors like phthalates, which can leach into food or drinks. When it comes to fast food, she personally avoids it due to the ingredients and prefers to bring her own meals. However, for those who still choose to eat fast food, she suggested options like McDonald's for beef patties and suggested preparing meals in advance for road trips. Overall, she encouraged listeners to recognize their power to make informed choices about their food and packaging.

    • Embrace challenges as opportunities for growthView setbacks as learning experiences and use them to make better choices in the future. Be kind to yourself throughout your wellness journey.

It's important to view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than sources of shame or despair. As the guest, Courtney from Real Foodology, emphasized, we all start at different points in our wellness journeys and make choices based on the information we have at the time. It's essential to be kind to ourselves, learn from our mistakes, and use that knowledge to make better choices moving forward. Courtney's definition of wellness aligns with this mindset – it's about being the best version of ourselves by taking care of our physical, emotional, and mental health. You can find Courtney and her podcast, Real Foodology, on various platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, all under the name Real Foodology. Remember, everyone's pursuit of wellness is unique, and it's crucial to embrace the process and keep moving forward.

Aaron McKenzie | Mind, Body & Spirit Fuelled by the Sun

Charlie's guest this week is Aaron Mckenzie, the movement & lifestyle coach. Aaron Mckenzie has been on a lifelong regenerative journey, and has been committed to supporting others in their own health journeys since the age of 19. Charlie and Aaron delve deep into the catalysts for his change, his quick tips for lifelong wellness and the importance of regenerative agriculture in restoring not just the environment but human health.

    Episode Takeaways:

Mind, body & spirit are the pinnacles of Aarons health philosophy, being one of a few 'fitness instructors' who focus as much on food as physicality | He left high school at 13, and spent his time skateboarding | After a period of suffering bad skin and lack of direction a Naturopath and whole food eating turned his life around, and he completed his Higher School Certificate | At age 18-19 Aaron started his current work with clients | Some quick tips to good health - get plenty of sleep, wind down every night before bed, enjoy every mouthful when eating, retain good relationships, stretch daily, keep hydrated, work and focus on your breath and breathing | Aaron ate 1 full cow and 2 lambs over 10 months including their organs | He consumed 800g/day of meat which was approx. 2-2,500 calories a day | Plants have chemical defences to stop them being eaten and the culinary arts are a way to deal with these | Everything a human needs to be healthy is in an animal | Aaron monitored his changes via blood tests and other markers | Sleep helps regulate the hormones that regulate appetite. Less sleep = more cravings and snacking | Aaron advocates daily fasting of 14-16 hrs | Learning to say no and learning to prioritise are the 2 biggest positive steps one can take to reclaiming their life.
