The Day the Music Died... DO THE WORK - Day 81

    enOctober 17, 2016

    Podcast Summary

    • A mundane job at a golf courseEvery experience, no matter how trivial, can contribute to personal growth and independence.

Even the most seemingly trivial or mundane experiences can hold significant meaning and value in our lives. In June 1994, the speaker found himself working at a golf course, tasked with string trimming every tree on the course with a classmate. The trees were evergreen and had long grass, making the job cumbersome. It was a cold and dreary day, and the work was laborious. However, the speaker looked back on this experience fondly, reflecting that it was a time of independence, cash flow, and growth for him. Despite the menial nature of the work, it provided him with a sense of accomplishment and contributed to his personal development. This experience serves as a reminder that every experience, no matter how small, can shape us in meaningful ways.

    • Finding joy in workRecognize when work no longer brings fulfillment, seek new opportunities that align with values and passions.

Work should bring excitement and fulfillment to our lives, not leave us feeling drained and uninspired. The speaker in this text shared his experience of once finding joy in manual labor but now feeling disconnected and unfulfilled in his office job. He realized that the job had no future for him and that it was time for a transition. The rainy day served as a stark reminder of the monotony and lack of passion he felt towards his work. The speaker emphasized that it's essential to recognize who we are and what we need to live a successful and glorious life, and if our current job isn't providing that, it may be time to consider a change. The speaker's realization was a difficult one, but it's important to acknowledge when we've outgrown a job and seek new opportunities that align with our values and passions.

    • Finding meaning and purpose in workStrive to find work that resonates with your values and motivates you for overall happiness and fulfillment.

The quality and fulfillment of our work plays a significant role in our overall happiness and sense of purpose. The speaker shares his personal experience of realizing that some of his best and worst days have come from work that resonated or didn't resonate with him. He acknowledges that everyone has to work, but the importance of doing work that aligns with our values and motivates us cannot be overstated. The speaker encourages listeners to consider the impact of their work on their lives and sets a personal goal to find work that brings him joy and fulfillment by a certain date. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes the importance of finding meaning and purpose in our work and encourages everyone to strive for that.

Next time you want to blame someone else for being ____ ask yourself - what did I do about it?  We are quick to blame others when we could have done more or done things differently.  It's often partially our own fault, more than we would like to admit. Admit it and be better.

Amy Polly - Why We Need A Mental Health Rebellion

I am filming from the apartment of one of my dear friends, Kevin. We had a plan to go to a Roger Waters concert in June, but he couldn't make it. I ended up going with a plus one who was recommended by two other friends, who turned out to be a wonderful human being and it was such a wonderful coincidence. I asked her what do you do? She said 'I founded Mental Health Rebelion'.  This led me to invite her on my podcast. My guest today is Amy Polly. She teaches people to find a path to peace.

Amy Polly is a  teacher, speaker, author and mental health campaigner. However, prior to this she had a corporate life and worked as a fully qualified accountant in the private and public sector.  Amy gave up the corporate world in 2021 after almost 20 years! As she shifted her focus to mindfulness and well-being she focused her efforts on bridging the gap between businesses and mental health by debunking the myths. Her most recent role was as a senior leader in the Fire Service managing three departments as well as leading the strategy for mental health and well-being.
