When You Don't Have Enough Information... DO THE WORK #583

    enAugust 02, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Perception shapes reality, look beyond the obviousBeing aware of perspectives and open to new ways of looking at things can lead to better understanding and informed decision-making.

Our perception of reality is shaped by how we choose to look at things. The FedEx logo with its hidden arrow is a metaphor for this concept. Many people have looked at the logo countless times without noticing the arrow because they weren't taught to see it. Similarly, in our daily lives, we may overlook important information or make incorrect assumptions due to a lack of proper perspective. This can lead to missed opportunities or poor decision-making. It's essential to be aware of the lenses through which we view situations and to be open to new perspectives. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and make more informed decisions. In essence, the ability to view things from different angles is a valuable skill that can enrich our lives. The discussion also touched upon the idea that sometimes, despite our best efforts, communication can be challenging. We may suggest solutions to problems, but they may not be well-received. In such situations, it's essential to be patient and persistent, and to consider that the other person may be approaching the situation from a different perspective. By understanding their point of view and finding common ground, we can work together to find a solution that benefits everyone.

    • Judging People Based on Appearances is MisleadingPeople's actions and responses can be influenced by factors beyond their control. Approach situations with an open mind and a willingness to understand the whole story before making assumptions or becoming frustrated.

Appearances can be deceiving, and it's essential to consider the full context before jumping to conclusions. The speaker shared an experience of feeling frustrated when suggesting ideas to someone who seemed uninterested or unresponsive. However, they later realized that the person's lack of response was due to memory and cognitive issues. The speaker acknowledged their mistake in not considering the person's circumstances and expressed the importance of being empathetic and understanding. This situation highlights the need to remember that people's actions and responses can be influenced by factors beyond their control. It's crucial to approach situations with an open mind and a willingness to understand the whole story before making assumptions or becoming frustrated. Additionally, it's essential to recognize that everyone is dealing with their unique challenges, and it's important to be patient, compassionate, and supportive.

    • Consider the bigger picture before reacting negativelyInstead of judging, ask what's interesting and approach situations with empathy and patience, recognizing that everyone is dealing with their own struggles

Instead of reacting negatively when encountering challenging situations or people, it's essential to consider the possibility that there may be underlying struggles or battles that we're not aware of. Rather than getting upset or judging, we can ask ourselves what's interesting, try to understand why someone might be acting a certain way, and approach the situation with empathy and patience. Remember, everyone is dealing with their own battles, and it's crucial to cut people some slack and be kind. Whether it's a minor interaction at the grocery store or a more significant issue with a colleague or friend, taking a moment to consider the bigger picture can help us navigate the situation more effectively and with greater compassion.

What Did You Do About It?

Next time you want to blame someone else for being ____ ask yourself - what did I do about it?  We are quick to blame others when we could have done more or done things differently.  It's often partially our own fault, more than we would like to admit. Admit it and be better.

I Never Thought of It That Way with Mónica Guzmán

I Never Thought of It That Way with Mónica Guzmán
In this episode, Sharon talks with Mónica Guzmán, whose new book, I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times helps us learn how to get more comfortable with the uncomfortable. Monica argues that we need to chase “I never thought of it that way” moments we have in order to grow in curiosity. When we manufacture certainty, we tend to see people and the world around us as one-dimensional. It’s important to understand the views of others because we’re not always happy in our echo chambers; we lose relationships, we feel anxiety about the future, and we pin the blame wherever we can. Once we begin to get curious and shine a light on what we perceive as a threat, that threat feels less insurmountable. It’s through curiosity that we can begin to see people from multiple dimensions–they aren’t monsters, they are people, just like us.
