"On A Road To Destruction" - w/ Jose M. Mendoza

On this podcast episode Jose M. Mendoza joins me to share how life was growing up on the southside of Chicago in the Brighton Park neighborhood.  From the age of 3 months old his mom leaves him to his grandma to be raised by her. He never meets his father. Brighton Park was heavily gang infested and in the 7th grade he finds himself pulled in to that lifestyle.  Alcohol and drugs begin to take over his life and gun violence soon follows. He finds himself constantly getting locked up, in and out of the juvenile system and county prison. Many years later he moves to Texas to escape the life he was leading out here but he is consumed by an alcohol & drug addiction. He finds himself homeless and hopeless until God steps in. Tune in to hear this man's story of redemption as well as all the ministry work he is currently involved in.

"Over the Road Trucking" - Interview w/ Steve Richardson

"Over the Road Trucking" - Interview w/ Steve Richardson

In this podcast episode I interview Steve Richardson. He shares about his upbringing in a small country town in Macedonia, Ohio. He grew up having an alcoholic and abusive stepfather that his mom and siblings would need to escape from in the middle of the night to find a safe place to stay. He also experiences verbal abuse from his stepmother in the form humiliation. This builds up anger & resentment which leads to rebellion that he carries with him for most of his life. He turns to alcohol and drugs which he continues using even as he is serving four years in the Navy. He finds himself in trouble in the military and even as he returns back home. He is married and divorced within a short period of time. Then he finds himself deep inside the world of a biker gang.  His life is heading deeper and deeper into darkness until he experiences something that turns his life around. He is currently an over the road truck driver and has a heart to minister to his fellow truck drivers with a ministry which he operates from the back of his semi truck. His radio program is being broadcast in over 80 countries throughout the world. Tune in and listen to this man's story of redemption.

The truth of love & addiction with Lauren Hokulani

The truth of love & addiction with Lauren Hokulani

At a dive bar in California, 21 year old Lauren met a playful and very Aussie man, Adam. It was not long before she would call him her husband. Passionate, fun & deeply in love, Lauren and Adams relationship was a whirlwind, yet even underneath the busyness of their life together, Lauren always felt loved, considered and supported by him. But Adam was harbouring a dangerous dependency, manifesting in a way that one does not always assume ‘addictions’ present themselves. A story of love, passion and devastation. This is what it means to love someone who is fighting a losing battle.

Jade also shares some major updates in her life and what this has meant for her life and future.

Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop - Daughter of Spies

Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop - Daughter of Spies

As a child, Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop, along with her five brothers, was raised to revere the tribal legends of the Alsop and Roosevelt families. Her parents’ marriage, lived in the spotlight of 1950s Washington where the author’s father, journalist Stewart Alsop, grew increasingly famous, was not what either of her parents had imagined it would be. Her mother’s strict Catholicism and her father’s restless ambition collided to create a strangely muted and ominous world, one that mirrored the whispered conversations in the living room as the power brokers of Washington came and went through their side door. Through it all, her mother, trained to keep secrets as a decoding agent with MI5, said very little. In this brave memoir, the author explores who her mother was, why alcohol played such an important role in her mother’s life, and why her mother held herself apart from all her children, especially her only daughter. In the author’s journey to understand her parents, particularly her mother, she comes to realize that the secrets parents keep are the ones that reverberate most powerfully in the lives of their children.

    31_Tia (Veteran)

    31_Tia (Veteran)

Tia grew up in a traumatic and toxic childhood. Both of her parents were alcoholics and this environment taught her bad coping mechanisms when dealing with negative situations. She joined the military and then later was medically discharged. She wondered why she had symptoms similar to ADD, had depression, anxiety but later discovered that the root cause of all the issues was PTSD. I am appreciative of Tia joining and sharing her story and how she’s raised the quality of her life and learning/applying positive coping mechanisms.

As I mentioned in the last episode, Tia and I met because she reached out to me on FB to talk about 22zero. I spoke with her and enjoyed the chat and thought others would appreciate her journey. Tia’s story resonated with me. From the explosive anger by making a simple mistake, using drugs and alcohol to detach from the reality of life. I was doing all the same things to avoid addressing the unprocessed trauma. I was just speaking with a police officer who dealt with drug addiction and came to a realization. I never had issues with addiction or feeling I needed a substance. I was addicted to not feeling the pain anymore.

I am not a believer in a magic pill or program to fix PTSD or systematically suppressed trauma but if I was to pick one of the most important things that improved the quality of my life it was learning to disconnect and be more introspective. I believe 22 zero is a source that can help with that. I hope there is something discussed that you find valuable and helps in some way.

We would really appreciate a share and like. I am always looking for veterans or first responders who have battled PTSD to share how you have raised the quality of your life to shorten that journey for others. Additionally if you support,  provide services for these groups, or have extensive knowledge of benefits available for these groups please reach out. I would love to have a chat and share that knowledge with the community.

Drugs Feel Great: The Shadow of Addiction

This episode is HEAVY and contains a trigger and content warning. In this episode, I talk about my alcoholism, what led to my addiction, and the realities no one tells you about drugs and alcohol. I speak to societal problems I see repeating themselves, high schooler, college kids, and adults alike. All of this came about as a result of watching the first season of Euphoria and recognizing how hard it still is to be a teenager. This episode ends on a positive note, with The Promises from The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Please take great care of yourself during and after this episode. I hope it is helpful and see you next time!

#97 A Wide Arc of Gratitude (Apr 7) - Tom G. (Fort Meyers, FL)

Tom believed his drinking, passing out and blacking out were all a part of normal drinking. It wasn't until he tried controlling his drinking that he realized how much of a problem he had. Today he finds his Wide Arc of Gratitude for the program, and for the members of AA that keep the program going.

    A WIDE ARC OF GRATITUDE

And, speaking for Dr. Bob and myself, I gratefully declare that had it not been for our wives, Anne and Lois, neither of us could have lived to see A.A.'s beginning.

    THE A.A. WAY OF LIFE, p. 67

Am I capable of such generous tribute and gratitude to my wife, parents and friends, without whose support I might never have survived to reach A.A.'s doors? I will work on this and try to see the plan my Higher Power is showing me which links our lives together.

    #90 No One Denied Me Love (Mar 31) - Michael L. & Lee M.

Lee and Michael talk about the spiritual solution and the concepts behind today's Daily Reflection.

    NO ONE DENIED ME LOVE

On the A. A. calendar it was Year Two. . . . A newcomer appeared at one of these groups. . . . He soon proved that his was a desperate case, and that above all he wanted to get well . . . [He said], "Since I am the victim of another addiction even worse stigmatized than alcoholism, you may not want me among you."

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, pp. 141-42

I came to you—a wife, mother, woman who had walked out on her husband, children, family. I was a drunk, a pill-head, a nothing. Yet no one denied me love, caring, a sense of belonging. Today, by God's grace and the love of a good sponsor and a home group, I can say that—through you in Alcoholics Anonymous—I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother and a woman. Sober. Free of pills. Responsible. Without a Higher Power I found in the Fellowship, my life would be meaningless. I am full of gratitude to be a member of good standing in Alcoholics Anonymous.

    The Lost Decade

    The Lost Decade

Our eighth episode focuses on the shortest short story Fitzgerald ever published, "The Lost Decade," which clocks in at only 1,100 words, making it Depression-era kin to today's flash fiction. Appearing in Esquire in December 1939 (exactly one year before the author's death), "Decade" is a haunting masterpiece of intimation and mood: eminence grise Matthew J. Bruccoli summed it up perfectly when he called it "elliptical." Told from the perspective of a New York City newspaper "call boy," Orrison Brown, the story focuses on an architect, Louis Trimble, who wanders the metropolis seeking to reestablish contact with the fleeting sights and sounds of real life. Not until the end of the piece do we learn Trimble is newly sober after an entire decade in an alcoholic stupor. The story's stoic tone is a perfect metaphor for both Fitzgerald's and America's struggle to survive the psychic shocks of the 1930s. We compare "The Lost Decade" to other representations of alcoholism in Fitzgerald's fiction, exploring what in the story is new, and we connect its New York setting to a stirring nonfiction ode to Gotham Fitzgerald penned only a few years earlier, "My Lost City."
