Freedom to express opinion and debate ideas has been the foundational aspect of Western civilization since the inception of our culture.  Without the freedom to print, write, and speak freely we lose the ability to understand what "truth" is.  To seek anything beyond what is "truth", is to seek appeasement. The ability to distinguish between what is good and what is evil is rooted in our ability to choose and reason. John Milton explains all of this and more in his historical masterpiece of a speech "Areopagitica".   I truly hope you enjoy this video on book 3 of volume 3 of the Harvard Classics. The Essays of Francis Bacon are a compilation of short ideas that cover a wide variety of topics. These short essays are filled with history, wit, and great information that provide a rich literature experience. From references to Plutarch's Lives to the Islam religion these essays have stood the test of time. His writing style is unique and the words he uses seem to be chosen very carefully. During the peak of Rome's glory lived a stoic emperor who left a journal that became a blueprint on how to live a virtuous and good life. The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is an important pillar of classical education and classical literature. The "Philosopher King" would become synonymous with Marcus Aurelius as he would become one of the most famous Roman emperors in history. Epictetus is one of my favorite stoic philosophers. From his wit to his straightforwardness, I enjoy his works immensely.  From his humble beginnings as a slave just trying to survive to his influence on emperors and generals, he has earned his place in history. The trial and death of Socrates is a remarkable story about one man's decision to defy the mob of society and choose truth over unrighteousness. So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The simple act of telling the truth can make waves that can last for thousands of years.  The conversation he has with Crito is one of steadfast courage in the wake of an unjust government.  Where are the men like him today? The Trial of Socrates is a remarkable story about one man's decision to defy the mob of society and choose truth over unrighteousness. So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The Journal of John Woolman is a documented journey of a remarkable man. Although, like me, you probably have never heard of John Woolman his story I feel can resonate with us all. He is a devout Quaker hell-bent on living a life that is loyal to his religion and traditions and at the same time courageously willing to challenge the status quo. His journal makes up a writing style that is logical and pious. He does not deviate from his ideas once he judges them as good and moral. An abolitionist before it was mainstream and a man who truly walked in the teaching of Christ.

Benjamin Franklin is one of those individuals in history I could sit around a fire with, sipping a cold brew, and just listen to the tales and stories of his remarkable time in history. His wit, his energy, and his lessons have placed him on the shelves of history as a truly remarkable founding father. I had a blast speaking with my old buddy about the coffee trailer he and his wife just started. Although he does not roast coffee yet I wanted to have Nate on because I feel starting a coffee trailer or cart is great for coffee roasters who want to start selling their own coffee. Nate was very generous in providing his figures and numbers on how much it costs to start a coffee trailer and also how much you can make with a coffee trailer.  For me, it was highly motivating to hear about his journey. I am in the process of following this path and it is nice to hear others' experiences. It was also nice reconnecting with an old friend and overall things, because of coffee!  Best of luck to you brother!

Things do not always go the way you planned but sometimes that may not be a bad thing.  Learning to accept the setbacks can be tough especially when you poured your heart and soul out for a dream that falls short of working out. We always see the success stories displayed on YouTube and the other social media platforms but I feel obligated to tell the humbling stories as well. Those moments in life that crush you and make you feel trapped. 

I am very excited to be marching in this new direction and look forward to bringing you along the journey!

Scott Thomas with Freedom Hill Coffee Roasters has been a major motivation for me over the past few months. I remember sitting in the truck at my work's parking lot about 2 years ago listening to Scott tell me about his dream of starting a coffee roastery.  I provided what little info I knew at the time and then off he went. Fast forward 2 years and he has a 10kg roaster in a 10,000 sqft facility and employees.  His story is inspiring to me because it just goes to show that if you have the mindset and willpower to make a dream come true then all it takes is a belief in yourself and consistent daily action to make it a reality.

Tom is one of those guys you go hang out with and you may end up in another country looking out over a mountain pondering life.  I have always enjoyed my conversations with Tom and I really think what he is doing is what puts the "good" in humanity.  I think we can all do more and I know for sure that I can when it comes to helping those who create the amazing coffee we drink.  I just need to take more action.

It has been long overdue. My dream for starting a coffee shop goes back many years. Hopefully, 2022 is the year I can make that dream become a reality. Pablo was such a cool dude to speak with and I learned a ton about Guatemala during our conversation.
