    Common Room Roasters

    Common Room Roasters
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Ed Moffatt moved to Newport Beach, California in 2016. What he brought with him was his take on coffee and a business that has quickly grown to become the award winning brand we know as Common Room Roasters. Common Room is a specialty coffee roastery, based out of Long Beach, California, a transparent operation in sourcing, roasting and brewing coffee, and they work with sustainable farmers all over the world. They’re even on a mission to change people’s perception of instant coffee! Simultaneously, Ed is the owner/operator of Milligram Coffee and Kitchen in Costa Mesa, a European inspired eatery with an homage to the Australian cafe culture. S3E8: Steaming Controversies: Unmasking the Coffee Industry with Jo Lopez

S3E8: Steaming Controversies: Unmasking the Coffee Industry with Jo Lopez

Our guest is none other than Jo Lopez (@link_is_not_the_princess), the head of coffee at a coffee company in London, who spills the beans on the recent drama brewing in the coffee industry. A rising storm in a coffee cup, the controversial Paragon chilling tool, is the hot topic; with big players attempting to freeze out smaller competitors like Squeaky Coffee with legal threats. Jo, however, isn't one to shy away from controversy and gives us the skinny on this contentious tool, just like 50percentarabica, leading us to a humorous discussion on memes that have sprung up as a form of protest against corporate bullying.

Trust us, the drama doesn't stop there. We rip back the curtain on the power dynamics at play in the industry, revealing how well-established companies are making bold moves to protect their market share. The dark side of innovation, we discuss the pattern of big companies trying to patent everything, and the ripple effects this has on small companies. Buckle up as we navigate the murky waters of influencer culture in the coffee industry, questioning the authenticity of reviews amidst sponsored content, and how this can leave consumers with a bitter taste.

So, whether you're a casual coffee drinker or a seasoned industry player, this episode promises a full-bodied blend of controversy, drama, industry insights, and personal experiences. Join us as we roast these hot topics!

I had a blast speaking with Matt Rosenblum and Misha Mansoor. It is not too often you hop on a call with two people you have never met and immediately feel like a friend. Their energy is contagious and I ended the podcast feeling hopeful and motivated to continue on my own path. This coffee journey is different for everyone and all of us will face some of the same struggles. The best we can do is share the journey and hope to move everyone a tad bit closer to their goals. Thanks again for coming on guys and dropping some knowledge on us.

How Much Does It Cost To Start a Custom Coffee Trailer - Abide Coffee Co. - Nate Ghoens (Ep. 22)

I had a blast speaking with my old buddy about the coffee trailer he and his wife just started. Although he does not roast coffee yet I wanted to have Nate on because I feel starting a coffee trailer or cart is great for coffee roasters who want to start selling their own coffee. Nate was very generous in providing his figures and numbers on how much it costs to start a coffee trailer and also how much you can make with a coffee trailer.  For me, it was highly motivating to hear about his journey. I am in the process of following this path and it is nice to hear others' experiences. It was also nice reconnecting with an old friend and overall things, because of coffee!  Best of luck to you brother!

Please go and follow Abide Coffee Co. and if you are ever in the Destin, Florida area look them up.

How "NOT" to Start a Coffee Shop - Time to Pivot - Rob Pirie Ep. 21

How "NOT" to Start a Coffee Shop - Time to Pivot - Rob Pirie Ep. 21

Things do not always go the way you planned but sometimes that may not be a bad thing.  Learning to accept the setbacks can be tough especially when you poured your heart and soul out for a dream that falls short of working out. We always see the success stories displayed on YouTube and the other social media platforms but I feel obligated to tell the humbling stories as well. Those moments in life that crush you and make you feel trapped.

I am very excited to be marching in this new direction and look forward to bringing you along the journey!

Head up, keep moving forward, smile, and never stop learning!

Quitting a Job and Going ALL in at 36 - Mill City Roasters, Fear, and Growing Pains - (Ep. 20)

Scott Thomas with Freedom Hill Coffee Roasters has been a major motivation for me over the past few months. I remember sitting in the truck at my work's parking lot about 2 years ago listening to Scott tell me about his dream of starting a coffee roastery.  I provided what little info I knew at the time and then off he went. Fast forward 2 years and he has a 10kg roaster in a 10,000 sqft facility and employees.  His story is inspiring to me because it just goes to show that if you have the mindset and willpower to make a dream come true then all it takes is a belief in yourself and consistent daily action to make it a reality.

Thanks so much for coming on the show Scott.
