Episode 15. Mas Que Nada Brothers

When you hear the name MAS QUE NADA, you know your ears will be a wash with some of the finest beats house music has to offer, as this DJ and Production Duo from the north of England always have their fingers firmly on the pulse when it comes to what really works for a crowded dance floor. With regular appearances in the UK at the likes of Ministry, XOYO & Studio 338 these ‘Not Actual Brothers’ can also be seen spinning their wares in Austria this coming April for Snowbombing alongside the likes of Bicep, Fat Boy Slim and Rudimental. (And if you can manage to squeeze your way into one of the busiest clubs in Ibiza this summer you’ll understand what a proper party looks like when it kicks off in a sweaty toilet at Hi.)

There really is nobody busier right now, so we’re delighted to have found a little slot in the diary to invite the boys onto the show to chat about their unwavering love for the scene and the power of a repetitive beat

Episode 14. Saya and DJ Texsta

Episode 14. Saya and DJ Texsta

With it being the season of goodwill, we decided here at the Slimson Podcast to give you one last special episode before we head into the New year.  A 'Slimson Stocking Filler' packed full of House Music goodness! And as we had such a lovely time when we last chatted to Saya we thought it was only fair to invite her back onto the pod with her sidekick in all things dance and fellow Centreforce DJ: TEXSTA, who has been part of the music world for over 4 decades with his eclectic selections from the world of Soul, Reggae, House, Rave, Hardcore, Drum & Bass, Jungle & UK Garage. More recently Saya & TEXSTA have been creating magic together in the studio with their latest release ARRIVED ( a classic piece of house music that is addictive from the very first listen) which you can listen to along with other tracks at the end of this episode. Thanks as always to every single one of you who has downloaded this podcast and helped it to grow. We love making it and have lots of exciting new conversations planned for the New Year. Oh....and a BIG thank you too to 'Producer Jez'. Without him sprinkling his technical magic The Slimson Podcast would never have got off the ground. Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas. Betting on Yourself - Walk-On Linebacker to Athletic Wear Business Owner

Betting on Yourself - Walk-On Linebacker to Athletic Wear Business Owner

Betting on yourself and finding a way to succeed is one of the most powerful skills you can learn.

Today on the podcast, Jake and Rylan sit down with former University of Houston linebacker, Roman Brown. Growing up in Dallas and taking a leap of faith to walk-on at Houston, Roman would go on to build an amazing collegiate career ending his senior season finishing fourth in The American with 113 tackles on the year as he served as a defensive captain. After receiving his degree in Economics and working 3 years as a Financial Wealth Advisor at Merrill Lynch, Roman started Vail Athletics: an athletic wear brand focused on equipping athletes holistically, targeting physical, emotional, and spiritual training.

In the episode, Roman talks about how to find mentors that are a couple steps ahead of you and why that has served him immensely in all areas of sports, business, and life. He also discusses how your experiences and lessons as a college athlete can be translated into the professional world, and in his case, entrepreneurship. Roman bet on himself when he walked onto the football team, and he bet on himself again when started Vail Athletics.

Most people don’t take action in their lives because it is “too risky.” But if you have past experiences where you’ve succeeded despite opposition, Roman’s advice is to draw on those and use them to your advantage on the next adventure.

#210 (Full) – Is this Gold’s Gym Innovator the Architect of the Health and Fitness Craze in America?

This week on The Alden Report, we are joined by successful architect, author and health and fitness legend Ed Connors. Ed's life and career have been fascinating to say the least. Originally born in Omaha, Nebraska, Ed graduated from Creighton Preparatory School, as well as the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters.

After returning from the war, Ed began his architecture career and worked for several prominent firms, including Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates and the office of Charles Eames. During this time, he was involved in the design of major projects such as California Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, the Headquarters for the Port of L.A. in San Pedro, and Fox Plaza in Century City.

In 1979, Ed and two partners purchased the single Gold's Gym in Santa Monica, California. They developed specific plans and programs that allowed the company to grow from a single gym operation to a multi-faceted company engaged in product distribution and licensing. Ed opened up the first gym franchise ever with a Gold's Gym in San Francisco, and the chain grew to 704 locations in 26 countries and 46 states before he exited the company in 2004.

During his time building the Gold's Gym brand, Ed helped shape the careers of hundreds of individuals, including Ms. Olympia Cory Everson and Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler. He also got several dozen athletes into professional wrestling and helped launch the careers of several TV personalities.

Today, Ed is working on his memoir entitled THE THREE MUSCLETEERS and actively pursuing the creation of a new gym model suited for the post-pandemic world.

You’re not going to miss the portion of our discussion where we debate the prevalence and effects that performance enhancing drugs have had on the industry both in its infancy and today.

Thank you very much to Ed for joining me on The Alden Report.

LaunchMart: Can Anyone Now Become A Fashion Designer?

LaunchMart: Can Anyone Now Become A Fashion Designer?

Once upon a time, finding the right fashion suppliers & manufacturers for small clothing brands was really difficult. Thankfully, startups such as LaunchMart (one of our portfolio startups) is revolutionising this with their 'Canva for clothing' platform. It is now easier, more than ever, to manufacture clothing using online platforms such as these with just a few clicks of a button, selection of templates and access to the right suppliers.

Peter Jeun Ho Tsang hosts this episode to discuss this very topic with the founders of LaunchMart, Ruby Le Hong Ngoc & Tan Nguyen. The discussion covers the challenges that small clothing brands usually face such as the inability to put design sketches onto paper, how their platform makes the design & production process much simpler and how this creates a wider opportunity for more designers to emerge.

Aditya Sharma On Designing Funky Products And Styling India

Fill out our brand recall survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6HP2RVB

On Shunya One this week, Shiladitya and Amit are joined by Aditya Sharma, Co-founder of The Souled Store. They talk everything about the company, why did he get into the apparel business, how his journey began and what lead to the idea of 'The Souled Store'. Aditya talks to us about how they converted their passion into business back in 2013, why it took them years to learn and perfect how things work. Shiladitya asks Aditya if in all these years they kept the same selling model or did they flip stuff around and how important franchisees are towards 'The Souled Store' model-do they matter or its good to be in an individual place. Further, he tells us how did they start reaching out to all the big franchisees of the world and how was their licensing process. They also talk about what was the difference between them and other brands while perusing the franchisees, how much approval right do the brands have, is it hard to work with them and the story behind their brand name. Building a Socially Conscious Clothing Brand with Connor Curran, Chief Laundry Folder & Founder at Local Laundry

Building a Socially Conscious Clothing Brand with Connor Curran, Chief Laundry Folder & Founder at Local Laundry
In this episode, we're joined by Connor Curran, Chief Laundry Folder and Founder at Local Laundry. Inspired by his parents, Connor wanted to become an entrepreneur and find a way to connect with the community, bring people together, and make their lives a little bit better. He shifted his attention towards clothing, as he believes the way we dress and present ourselves to the world sends messages about who we are and what we believe in. So he started an online t-shirt company called Local Laundry. Since anyone can start a t-shirt company, the main factor is to differentiate yourself. Local Laundry focuses on giving back to the community, bringing people together, building a community around a brand, and celebrating everyone in that community. Furthermore, Local Laundry switched all of its manufacturing to Canadian-made products. People are willing to pay slightly more as all the profit goes back to the Canadian community. Connor also describes how the pandemic offered them the opportunity to switch their business focus from retail to custom garments and details the benefits of this move.
