Ep.142 Plot Twist! Special Birthday Episode

This week we have a special episode to kick off celebrating Lauren’s birthday! Lauren chose the theme for this episode and decided on stories with a plot twist! Aside from all the fun facts about Lauren and March 2nd, we have two stories complete with eye-popping, mind blowing plot twists. The birthday girl is up first with a story about a woman named Angela Diaz and her husband Ian Diaz. Angela is tormented by a deranged stalker through emails, craigslist ads, and random men showing up to her house. As police close in on a possible suspect, they realize that everything is not as it seems. Next up, Kenzie talks about the story of Lt. Charles Joseph "Joe" Gliniewicz of the Fox Lake Police Department. This tragic story has an even more tragic plot twist that you truly won’t see coming. Get ready for a truly SHOCKING episode (figuratively speaking). Happy Birthday Lauren!

261 | Growing A Niche Business Through Exclusive Insights | with Michael Nguyen

261 | Growing A Niche Business Through Exclusive Insights | with Michael Nguyen

Michael Nguyen is an entrepreneur and the Founder of Fire & Brilliance who has dedicated most of his professional life to the beautiful world of jewelry.

He kicked off his career in sales within the financial services sector before ever marketing a single ring, bracelet, necklace or pair of earrings.

This was when he discovered that he had a natural talent in curating relationships, conveying relevance and building long-term business connections.

In his mid-20’s, Michael started his jewelry career by creating custom and unique pieces for his clients.

Michael was also an early adopter of lab-grown moissanite, diamonds and gemstones which led him to influence a movement that disrupted the traditional ways of doing “business as usual.”

Fire & Brilliance was nominated as one of Inc 5000’s fastest growing companies in both 2019 and 2020 with its unique approach.

As a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, Michael is the host of the “Geminar” show where he provides relevant jewelry industry knowledge and insights.

Outside of running his business, Michael enjoys reading, staying in shape, spending time with great company and tasting all types of fire-burning hot sauces.

Breakin' It Down with Sheilani Alix - Overheard Missed Connection

Breakin' It Down with Sheilani Alix - Overheard Missed Connection

    Guess who's back!

It's the one and only Sheilani (aka Sheidizzle)!

And of course it's the holidays (again!). Which means there will be holiday parties. Which means there will be missed connections and overheard conversations. Which means there will be missed connection ads on Craigslist. And that's where Kathy and Sheilani come in!

They break it down and give tips on how to write the most poetically descriptive, enticing, "Oh My Gawd It's Me They Are Talking About" missed connection ad. In case you were wondering what a bad ad looks like, Sheilani reads a few examples of how not to write an ad.

Tune in and find out why it's important to be a good speller, what Sheidizzle did on a first date that may seem weird, and when you should place a missed connection ad.

Kismet Color with Artist Kimmy Quillin: Painting, Living in NYC as an Artist, and Highs and Lows of Creating

Kismet Color with Artist Kimmy Quillin: Painting, Living in NYC as an Artist, and Highs and Lows of Creating

This week’s episode is the first half of my conversation with visual artist Kimmy Quillin. We spoke for nearly three hours over Zoom, her from her home in Brooklyn and me here in LA. We begin by talking about mornings, her coffee routines and how being heliotropic, time of day, and color inform her painting. How both her Wisconsin roots and her love of New York City, the city she’s lived in for over a decade inform her work and personality. She talks about working in different mediums, the realties of living as an artist, our mutual love of Craigslist, highs and lows of releasing art and how she takes care of herself throughout it all.

She’s one of my favorite painters whose work can be seen on the walls of Good Move in Brooklyn (whose founder, Jules, has been on the podcast twice) as well as in Elle, Domino Magazine, and at Uprise Art. She presented her solo show Many Moons at Chinatown Soup in November 2019 (I was there) and at Spite Haus in January 2020. We met before I left NYC and share a bunch of mutual friends whom I polled for questions to ask her at the end of part two. In part two we talk more about her process—how she creates conditions for creativity, incorporating chance in her work, what she calls intentional chaos—and much more. I was excited to talk to her and this conversation exceeded my expectations.
