DIRTY DOZEN...I'm Talking HEALTH! ( Living Lucky )

There is SO MUCH to try and figure out about health and fitness. Green Smoothies have become an integral part of our daily routine. The cost of that adds up, whether you're growing your own veggies, or buying them.  Jason worked in a tomato packing house when he was young, and we are both aware that chemical pesticides and fertilizers are used in many agricultural operations.  We prefer to eat as clean as possible and learned about the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15.

The Elizabeth Rider article/Blog I was grabbing the list from this morning.
Her information seems great, thoughts and facts thorough… She isn’t our personal health coach and we have not actually met her… yet. https://www.elizabethrider.com/dirty-dozen-clean-15/

Interview #08 Pesticide Action Network | The Dirty Dozen

Interview #08 Pesticide Action Network | The Dirty Dozen

An interview with Nick Mole, Policy Officer with the Pesticide Action Network (PAN),  the only UK charity focused solely on tackling the problems caused by pesticides and promoting safe and sustainable alternatives in agriculture, urban areas, homes and gardens. PAN works tirelessly to apply pressure on governments, regulators, policymakers, industry and retailers to reduce the impacts of harmful pesticides to both human health and the environment. Their work includes campaigning for change in policy and practices at home and overseas, coordinating projects which help smallholder farming communities escape ill-health and poverty caused by pesticides, and contributing our wealth of scientific and technical expertise to the work of other organisations that share their aims.

Charlie Moores spoke with Nick shortly after the release of PAN's latest ‘dirty dozen’ research – an analysis of data the government gathers as it monitors pesticide residue levels in or on food consumed in the UK. It was hard to know where to begin with this interview because it’s genuinely shocking stuff, but Charlie began by asking Nick to start with a quick overview of the government research PAN's analysis was based on…which, despite the already truly disturbing results and if he was understanding things correctly, the government appeared to be cherry-picking to make things seem better – or less bad - than they actually are…

    12. Gardening for Health

    12. Gardening for Health

You get to play in the dirt, be out in the fresh air and sunshine, and eat healthy, nutritious food that can help you heal.  It lifts your spirits and provides exercise.  And…it is fun.  There are so many benefits!  Join Jan and find out all about gardening and how to get started today.   In this episode:

    - The Benefits of Gardening
    - Why Organic
    - The Dirty Dozen and The Clean Fifteen
    - Practical Tips to Get Started Today

April is a great time to start preparing your garden.   Start now and enjoy the bounty from your garden this summer.  You will be so glad you did!

Prevention Strategy 5: The Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen. When to buy Organic?

Prevention Strategy 5: The Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen. When to buy Organic?

Of course, although buying organic produce is the best, but when is it ok to buy their less expensive cousins?  How can you know which fruits and vegetables are ok to buy without the added cost of purchasing organic? Every year the Environmental Working Group publishes the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 Lists. These publications rate foods according to which have the highest and lowest pesticide residue to help shoppers determine which foods to buy organic and which are okay to buy conventional. Although ideally every shopper should be able to purchase organic fruits and vegetables, the reality is that organic often costs more. By heeding the EWG’s 2020 Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 Lists, health-concerned shoppers can still get the most for their money and minimize their pesticide exposure.

Lists change slightly from year to year, so it’s important to recheck each year, and more importantly, take a copy of it with you to the grocery store! Why are pesticides particularly harmful for hormone dependent cancers? Many pesticides cause estrogenic effects or effects that mimic estrogen in the body. The majority of breast cancers are fueled by estrogen so any added estrogen to our diets should be avoided.

Research has established a strong link between estrogen activity induced by organochlorine pesticides (containing chlorine), and the risk of developing breast cancer. The results are significant. Patients with very high estrogen levels due to pesticide residues run four times more risk of developing the disease than patients with undetectable or very low levels. So far, 568 chemical products have been identified that affect our hormones.

    This year’s Dirty Dozen list:

    1. Strawberries

    2. Spinach

    3. Kale

    4. Nectarines

    5. Apples

    6. Grapes

    7. Peaches

    8. Cherries

    9. Pears

    10. Tomatoes

    11. Celery

    12. Potatoes

    The “Clean Fifteen”

    1. Avocados

    2. Sweet corn

    3. Pineapple

    4. Onions

    5. Papaya

    6. Sweet peas (frozen)

    7. Eggplants

    8. Asparagus

    9. Cauliflower

    10. Cantaloupes

    11. Broccoli

    12. Mushrooms

    13. Cabbage

    14. Honeydew melon

    15. Kiwifruit

To summarize, today’s tip is to buy organic…if you can’t always do so, buy the dirty dozen in organic and the clean fifteen from the conventional isle. If organic is not available for the dirty dozen, a compromise is to soak the fruits or vegetables in a sink full of water to which one cup of apple cider vinegar is added.  Let them soak for five minutes then rinse and air dry. This is a natural way to help remove pesticides. Be sure to always rinse thoroughly. To keep a list of the clean 15 and dirty dozen handy, print out the transcript of this podcast.
