94 - Boredom Has Its Benefits

94 - Boredom Has Its Benefits

Cindy Esliger talks all about boredom in this episode. Often viewed as a negative, research actually suggests that boredom can have some surprising benefits. Experiencing boredom is a necessary part of growth. Cindy unpacks what causes boredom, the problems and perks that can come of it, and ultimately how to handle it.

When we’re bored, we’re more likely to engage in divergent thinking. That’s important for generating multiple solutions to a problem, sparking creativity, and inspiring growth. Whether bored at work or in our personal lives, boredom is often a catalyst for exploring new career options or skills and trying a new hobby. Not all boredom is beneficial, though, so Cindy explains the differences between good and harmful boredom.

Frequently, how we combat boredom can make it more or less useful. Our unoccupied minds demand entertainment but if we just idly distract ourselves with our phones, we miss opportunities to take a break, look for novelty and unique solutions, or pick up a new skill. Cindy offers five ways to embrace boredom and overcome the discomfort it can bring. Cindy will inspire you to view boredom in a whole new way.

You Can Have It All in a Relationship, Just Not All at Once

You Can Have It All in a Relationship, Just Not All at Once

S4 Episode 9: You Can Have It All in a Relationship, Just Not All at Once

    Episode Summary

Believing you can have it all in a relationship is realistic, as long as you accept that it will probably not happen at the same time.  There will be points in a romantic relationship where certain priorities the couple has identified take precedence over others.  Whether it is romance, sex, financial security, family, travel, hobbies or sleep, there will never be enough hours in the day to fully satisfy all of the daily responsibilities that come with life.

The important thing is being on the same page as your partner.  If the two of you have built a strong foundation of respect, communication, trust and acceptance in your relationship, it will be easier to plan and work together to meet your personal and relationship goals.  Working cooperatively can help you achieve your relationship wants and needs in a more efficient manner.

Each life stage offers the chance to shift your attention.  Just make sure that if you focus on building financial security, you do not completely ignore your familial responsibilities. Shifting a focus is not the same as neglecting your partner’s wants and needs.  Balance and realistic expectations are what keep a relationship from imploding.

At the end of each episode, Marlee and Lis vent about commonly experienced issues in romantic relationships. In this episode, the ladies discuss when men’s refusal to ask for help can end up creating bigger issues down the line.

    Show Notes

In our society there’s a commonly held belief that you can have it all. Yes, you can have it all in a relationship, just not all at once. It’s going to come at different points in a relationship, and there’s a time and place for everything.

It takes time to construct the life you really want, and that’s where the foundation of your relationship comes in. A strong foundation sets the tone to build what you envision for your future. But keep in mind that different parts of your relationship will be stronger than others depending on the current stage you are in.

Agreeing to focus on an aspect of your life with your partner can help you flourish in that area, whether that’s intimacy, quality time, or focusing on your kids. Nothing can be perfect all of the time, but if you make a part of your lives a priority together, you can make the most of it. Balance is key in a relationship, and with balance comes compromise.

You may feel under pressure to accomplish certain things in your life, so you put unrealistic expectations on yourself. As a result, you feel dissatisfied with where you are in life. If this resonates with you, something has to give. Otherwise, you put your relationship in jeopardy to explode.

In this episode, the vent session topic is: When men’s stubbornness stops them from asking for help fixing things. Some men feel like they should know how to fix something just because they are men. They don’t want to show weakness, or they can become blinded to the fact that other courses of action – like finding an expert or hiring help – could be a better option.

Are You Addicted to Dissatisfaction? Here's the Cure

Are You Addicted to Dissatisfaction? Here's the Cure

Many ambitious people remain unfulfilled because they focus too much on the elusive perfect end goal rather than appreciating the incremental progress made along the way. Learn a mindset shift that helps you gain more enjoyment and motivation by valuing small wins.

    Summary

It's easy to constantly feel dissatisfied, even after accomplishing great things. The problem is comparing achievements to an ideal vision rather than measuring against past progress. This episode explores why success doesn't necessarily bring happiness and how to change your mindset.

The key is learning to value progress, not just achievement. Have big goals, but don't let them be the only measurement. Periodically, compare yourself to your past self, not the end goal. Note your growth, extract lessons, adjust your goals, and compound confidence from wins.

This gives motivation, belief, and enjoyment. Seeing shortfalls demoralizes. Valuing progress makes the journey fulfilling. You gain satisfaction throughout life, not just when you "arrive" at success. Most goals change anyway. Accept imperfect wins and appreciate incremental gains.

This mindset shift is essential for ambition without anxiety. You'll never reach your vision of perfection or full potential. But you can savor progress made. Keep growing, but stay grateful for how far you've come. The journey itself becomes the reward.

    Top 3 Growth Tips

    • Have big goals, but don't only measure against them - Your definition of success will keep changing, so appreciate progress too.
    • Note specific ways you've grown - Extract lessons from achievements and failures to build confidence.
    • Adjust goals based on wins - Let yourself feel pride in progress to gain momentum for greater success.

'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' - When You Often Feel Dissatisfied

'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' - When You Often Feel Dissatisfied

In today's episode we talk about dissatisfaction. What causes low or high level frustration in your relationship? Do you often think that your partner does not quite offer you what you want? Chronic dissatisfaction that does not get addressed can lead to resentment, constant bickering and possibly to the end of the relationship.

We discuss where the dissatisfaction comes from. Causes can be manifold and are not often pinpointed. It's helpful to identify whether this feeling is something that originates in us, our partners or in the dynamic of the relationship.

Dissatisfaction can be a manifestation of an insecure attachment style; we discuss how either an avoidant-dismissive or anxious-preoccupied can lead to dissatisfaction in the relationship. There is an underlying anxiety that your partner is not quite giving you what you need or that your partner is not trustworthy.

When both partners are frequently dissatisfied they might have got into a particular pattern and cycle together. This is true especially if one partner is anxious and the other avoidant.

Often dissatisfaction does not get addressed appropriately. One or both partners blame each other rather than looking at the underlying issues and at the relational patterns that have been established together. We discuss what action needs to be taken to voice your frustrations in a way that your partner can engage and hear what you have to say.

My Chronic Dissatisfaction - Fridays with Ferne: Episode #17

Have you ever felt like you weren’t enough? Like you weren’t as smart or talented or successful as all of the other people around you?

That is exactly the way Sabrina feels. In this episode of Fridays with Ferne, Ferne introduces a case about a woman named Sabrina who is chronically dissatisfied. Even though she works super hard, she never feels like she’s enough. After each achievement, she is happy for a single moment before being dissatisfied once again. She looks around her and sees everyone else doing incredible things and never feels like she can compare. She feels small in comparison. She doesn’t know what else she can do to get to a better place.

For me, it sounds like Sabrina has tied her value and her self-worth to her achievements. It sounds like Sabrina compares herself to many others in the world. What I would try to teach Sabrina is that her happiness and satisfaction actually have nothing to do with what she achieves. Instead, her happiness and satisfaction have to do with the story she tells about what she is and is not achieving.
