12: A Breast Cancer Diagnosis May Be The Change You Need with Yaffa Palti

12: A Breast Cancer Diagnosis May Be The Change You Need with Yaffa Palti

While we like to think that we are adaptable beings who can handle change well, the truth is that for most people, it takes a major event, diagnosis, or catastrophe to spark that change. Today’s guest, Yaffa Palti, helps us understand this. Yaffa explains that most people get used to a certain level of discomfort or pain in their lives, so they really don’t think about the changes they could be making to mitigate those discomforts.

    You’ll hear:

    • Why people get stuck in their discomfort
    • How emotional traumas manifest themselves physically
    • The #1 blocker of hope
    • Why it’s difficult trying to change in isolation
    • The one behavior that allows you to take no responsibility for your outcomes in life (and how to change it!)
    • What actually allows you to achieve success
    • What Rosh Hashanah is and how you could be using this theory in your daily lives
    • And more!

    More about Yaffa:

A born and bred Flatbush girl, Yaffa has always been gifted in connecting with people. Women and girls of all ages are drawn to her seeking advice, support, connection, and friendship, and she is able to relate to them genuinely and effectively, no matter their life circumstance. Yaffa moved to Israel after marrying her husband and lived in Har Nof for seven years. While he was becoming a rav and dayan, Yaffa was a teacher, mechanechet, play director, and coordinator of extra curricular activities in various American girls' seminaries. In addition to being a teacher, Yaffa is a sought after public lecturer, known for her charisma, depth and humor. She is often compared to a ray of sunshine, transforming any environment she encounters into one of warmth and light. She is also a singer/songwriter and often blends together her lectures and melodies. In 2005 Yaffa moved, with her husband and children, to Mexico City, where Rav Palti served as the rabbi and spiritual leader of a large secular community. She became fluent in Spanish and was actively involved in community affairs and teaching for eleven years. In 2016 she and her family moved to San Diego California to start Aish San Diego, where her husband became the Rabbi and spiritual leader of the Carmel Valley community. Yaffa continues her community involvement in San Diego and is dedicated to kiruv full time. As a speaker, she lectures on many diverse topics, mostly motivational and inspirational, all profound, enlightening and unique. Yaffa comes from a solid Torah observant background, and was raised in a home infused with chessed and unconditional acceptance. She is a trained educator as well as a certified substance abuse professional.

07: Why don't you want your kids to grow up? - Motherhood Monday

07: Why don't you want your kids to grow up? - Motherhood Monday

Do you ever hear yourself saying, "I don't want them to grow up; I wish they would stay like this forever; I can't imagine them growing up; I don't want to rush this age..."

My husband always shares these sentiments when I share my excitement about our daughters experiencing life and getting older. I look forward to seeing all the new lessons they learn and how they experience them. It's not easy, but life is about yin and yang; without one, you couldn't experience the other.

As parents, our number one priority with children is to protect them; but protect them from what? Our past and experience, our insecurities, our journey. This is a question I want you to ask yourself after today's episode.

In today's episode, we are going to explore

    • The bittersweet thoughts and emotions we as parents often experience when thinking about our children growing up.
    • We delve into the underlying fears, hopes, and narratives that shape our perspective on their growing-up journey.
    • Navigate the complexities of parenthood, reflecting on our own experiences and desires for our children's futures.

This episode is a deep one! It will bring up some feelings and thoughts about your experiences and how your past is affecting your present moments with your little ones (soon-to-be big ones).

Subscribe, listen, and share your thoughts with us. Your next chapter starts here.

Living an Unoptimized Life, Dad Reflexes, Teaching Kids to Solve Their Own Problems, Sleepless Nights and Sibling Love

On this episode of Aligned Dad, the speaker discusses a range of topics from Reddit videos showing extraordinary and amusing feats of fathers to a philosophy of "unoptimized" living. They share stories of adventure and bravery, discussions with fellow parents, and the importance of trusting one's own inner compass rather than obsessing over plans. The podcast delves into various wisdom nuggets shared by medical doctors and the importance of teaching kids to solve their own problems and make their own choices. The speaker shares their personal struggles as a new parent and offers insight into the challenges and joys of parenting, while reminding listeners not to beat themselves up for missed opportunities and to be present in the moment.

    Show Notes :
[00:00:40] Story about the beauty of living an unoptimized life; experiences of Derek Sivers and his son, and how planning and optimizing too much can lead to missing out on unexpected joyful moments.

[00:06:22] Trust your intuition and let things unfold naturally, like children who often play with the cardboard box instead of the toy.

[00:12:12] Living multiple lives in one lifetime is exhausting and confusing, especially when we constantly search for the right path. It can lead to friction in relationships and unresolved issues. The best way to ensure mental strength in kids is to lead by example.

[00:15:32] Teach kids to solve their own problems, not solve them for them; this is the golden standard of parenting and being a human. Empower children to make their own decisions and find solutions to their problems, as the challenge will make them stronger.

[00:21:30] Dad admits he has been reckless but likes being adventurous when playing with child. He also has quick reflexes to protect her from falling.

[00:24:33] Narrator regrets not being able to save his newborn sister, but later redeems himself by saving his sister from a dangerous water heater.

[00:26:48] A man's sister is found unconscious in the bathroom, and he has to break down the door and perform CPR to save her life.

[00:30:09] Fathers are discussing the birth of a second child, and one Indian father explains the cultural preference for having a girl. A Canadian father expresses concern over the challenges of raising a daughter, but the Indian father is confident in his parenting abilities. The conversation leads to a funny anecdote about a date with a girl whose father threatened the Canadian father with a gun.

[00:34:53] Give children freedom to choose and educate them to choose wisely. Communicate with kids to avoid troubles. Don't impose life experiences on them.

[00:40:58] The podcast will be on YouTube and Instagram with short snippets for comments and questions. The hosts are happy to share their wisdom and experiences with no concern for criticism. The podcast is named "The Aligned" to signify inner alignment.

    9. How to Get into the Creative Zone and Keep your Focus with Creativity Coach

Nefeli Soteriou is a creativity coach who  is also an independent film producer who specializes in helping creative professionals, specifically filmmakers. She has a background in art and studied photography in undergrad and film and media arts in grad school.

It was while working in academia and mentoring international students when she discovered coaching. She found the Creativity Coaching  Association and pursued a certification with a focus on Psychology. She combines her creative background in film with her coaching skills to help filmmakers, videographers, game designers, and other storytellers.

The conversation mentions the niche of mental health which Nefeli  worked in, and the training she received for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Nefeli has  helped all kinds of patients, from cancer patients to those with chronic illness. A  common thread among the people she has helped, is anxiety which  often stems from fear of the unknown, or fear of what others may think. Nefeli mentions the importance of finding  the right coach to help. She makes the distinction between a coach and therapist stating  that a coach does not go into the past like a therapist does, but instead sees the person as a functional person.

In this conversation, Nefeli talks about  how a coach can help someone who has a fear of starting a project. She mentions four important elements to focus on when beginning a project: focus on something, devote yourself to it, give yourself permission to be yourself in the process, and get feedback from people you trust.

Nefeli also discusses how coaching can help people with motivation, mind shift, and pursuing a lifestyle that fascinates them. She typically works with clients remotely, but when she is in Cyprus, she sees them in person.

This conversation focuses on the creative client specifically. In her work Nefeli Soteriou provides coaching support to creative clients, helping them to organize their ideas, develop their screenplay, and budget for their project. Nefeli listens without judgment, and helps clients understand what is hindering them, as well as establishing new habits to help them for life.

The ultimate goal is for her clients to become autonomous, learn to coach themselves and not be dependent on the coach.

    Abby & Ryan Resist Change

    Abby & Ryan Resist Change

“Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.”
    - Tony Robbins (probably)

    WHY DO WE RESIST CHANGE??

    • LOSS. There's a loss, which means pain. Even if there's a gain, it's unknown; the loss is always known. Known is more comfortable than unknown.
    • ANTICIPATION & PREDICTABILITY. A 2016 study showed that "knowing that there is a small chance of getting a painful electric shock can lead to significantly more stress than knowing that you will definitely be shocked." (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/03/160329101037.htm)
    • CONTROL. Intentionally maintaining a painful circumstance gives a sense of control, whereas moving into the unknown is a loss of your sense of control. Feeling out of control is often more uncomfortable than the pain of the present moment.
    • ATTACHMENT TO OUTCOMES. A change threatens the possibility of arriving at a specific future you want to reach.

    ANTIDOTES:

    • SURRENDER. Know what you can't control, and stop trying to control it.
    • PRESENCE. Get out of the past and future, and come back to now.
    • SELF ACCEPTANCE. Disengage from stories about how circumstances (preferable or painful, real or imaginary) affect your value or identity.

“We are often more threatened by the possibility of a relationship with others changing than the possibility of the relationship with ourselves staying the same.”
    - Vienna Pharaon

    THE CHANGE CYCLE:

    1. Dissolution - change happens, the status becomes not-quo, and suffering takes hold.
    2. Adjustment - you formulate a plan to adjust to the new thing.
    3. Integration - Your new plan becomes a new way of life.
    4. Maintenance - The new status becomes quo. I realize I'm using that phrase horribly.

*** Moving from 4 to 1 feels like three steps back, but it's really one step forward. It's the Change Cycle, not the Change Unidirectional Linear Progression ***

    • D = Dissatisfaction with the present circumstance
    • V = Vision for what the future could be
    • F = First Steps (putting on your shoes and getting to the running trail)
    • R = Resistance to change

Moving Away To Evolve – Jesus Gonzalez

Moving Away To Evolve – Jesus Gonzalez

A few years ago, before the chaos of COVID-19, I used to post up at this place named Fuel Cafe. Every Thursday, I'd go, sip on some beer or coffee and write. Naturally, I became known as a regular and met interesting people.

One of those interesting people is Jesus Gonzalez.

When I met Jesus, he had just opened up Mazorca Tacos, a food truck selling tacos made out of handmade tortillas. About a year later, he co-founded Zocalo Food Park, the first food park in Wisconsin. At some point, he also opened up a commissary kitchen.

And if that wasn't enough, he's an investor in the semi-new startup Cashdrop, a mobile app that enables any business to create and manage an online storefront from their phone.

Did you get all of that? Yeah, Jesus has plenty on his plate — no pun intended.

With a bio like that, you'd think this interview is about food or business... But nope. We barely discuss any of that.

Instead, I decided to dig deep into decisions he made before his business ventures. How did he set himself up to seize so many opportunities?

A key decision he credits to changing his life forever was moving to New York, and later Spain after high school.

Years later, he returned to his hometown fully equipped to start his slew of businesses.

In this interview, we talk about internal realizations, generational patterns, and confronting the fear of the unknown as we discuss Jesus' journey.

Enjoy the food for thought and good vibes from Jesus Gonzalez.
