    Have you ever wondered why allergies and intolerances, especially in children, are skyrocketing in Australia? Or if our medical system's approach to these conditions is falling short? Join us as we delve deep into the perplexing issue of food allergies and intolerances in children in Part 2 of our Gut Health Podcast Series. If you missed Part 1, click here to learn more about the underlying causes of tummy issues such as constipation, reflux, and tummy aches (plus many more).

    In today's episode, I will be sharing insights on:

    • The rise of allergic diseases, and the statistics behind this;
    • The complexities of the hygiene hypothesis;
    • Allergies vs. intolerances, including information on IgE and IgG reactions;
    • We'll question the traditional medical approach which focuses on relieving symptoms, rather than underlying causes;
    • The dangers of cutting out many food groups long term;
    • I will discuss the crucial role diet and holistic strategies play in managing these conditions.
    • The importance of improving gut function and immune tolerance, focusing on four main areas including:
      • Enzyme production;
      • The role of bacteria in the gut, including diversity and balancing bacterial strains;
      • The integrity of the gut wall;
      • The role the immune system plays, and how to improve immune tolerance.

    Episode 48: Getting to the Gut of Things & More with Naturopathic Doctor Sasha Coleman

    In this episode of the Plant-Based Canada Podcast we are joined by Sasha Coleman, ND.

    Dr. Coleman completed her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona and stayed in the States for almost 10 years. She is originally from Toronto, Ontario and attended McMaster University where she obtained her BSc. She recently moved back home to fulfil a lifelong dream of working alongside her sister, Dr. Tenisha Mitchell-Lambert who is a family physician with an emphasis in Lifestyle Medicine.  (You may remember Dr. Tenisha from Episode 38 of the Plant-Based Canada Podcast, if not, check it out after this episode 🙂.) Together they work at Integrative Interactive Health in Mississauga, Ontario.

    Dr. Coleman was introduced to vegan and vegetarian cooking at a young age and made the decision to adopt this lifestyle for herself. Shortly after making those changes, her father became ill and began working with a Naturopathic doctor. After witnessing her father’s health improve by implementing a more plant forward diet in conjunction with other Naturopathic therapies, she decided to pursue Naturopathy for herself. Due to her personal and professional experiences, Dr. Coleman shares that she is delighted to educate and treat people using the tools of natural medicine and dietary modification to positively impact health and overcome disease.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Lifestyle Practices
    • Gut Health & The Microbiome
    • Food sensitivity*
    • Food sensitivity vs. Food allergy
    • Impact of Inflammation
    • Integrative Interactive Health Clinic and Clients

    Is Food Our Friend or Our Foe?

    Is Food Our Friend or Our Foe?
    We have to eat, or we die. Yet foods probably kill most of us, at least in developed countries. Cows make milk for their calves. Pigs have piglets to maintain their species, not to feed us. Wheat grows seeds to maintain its species too. So do cabbages. These foods are not designed for us. We just have to find foods that keep us alive, even if the long-term consequences are less than ideal. Why do so many people die of coronary heart disease? The evidence is strong that the toxic sugar, galactose, in milk contributes to narrowed arteries, and the membrane of the fatty globules in cream contributes to blood clots. The solution is to eat hard cheese. Why do so many die of cancer. There is good evidence that fructose, a sugar in fruit, sugar cane, sugar beet, and high fructose corn syrup, enables cancer cells to form new cancer cells, to enlarge tumours, and to spread to other sites in the body. Sugars seem to play a part in multiple sclerosis as well. If you buy a car, there is a manual that tells you what fuel to use in that model. Unfortunately, babies are born without manuals, and parents don’t know what model of baby they have. Some people with food and chemical sensitivity take decades to find out what model they are. Foods are vital, but can cause us major problems, and even kill us. Poor food preparation, like inadequate cooking of meat or dried beans, or fast modern bread baking, cause trouble. So of course do additives in foods, especially when they are combined in one meal. Then there are pesticides in foods, often many pesticides in one food. Food may be mouldy. Food handlers may transmit infections via the foods they touch. Contaminated water may be used to wash foods. Food packaging may contaminate foods with aluminum or chemicals that leach from plastic. We survive as long as we do, because we have complex immune systems, and multiple ways of making chemicals safe. We have to find a way of working with our bodies, so as to have a happy and productive life. Learn about wise food choices

    Does Everyone Have Food Intolerances These Days?

    Does Everyone Have Food Intolerances These Days?

    Any restaurant food server will tell you/ Table of four? Four different food intolerances and allergies. One is gluten free, the other is dairy free, another might be a vegetarian or allergic to nuts, or something else.

    Food intolerances are different from allergic reactions, they don’t involve the immune system.

    In this episode Kate talks with Dr Evangeline Mantzioris from South Australia University. She’s dedicated a lifetime to understanding food intolerances, whether they’re really increasing as they seem to be, and what we can do about them.

    It is Never too Late to Become The Leader of Your Family's Wellness

    It is Never too Late to Become The Leader of Your Family's Wellness

    When it comes to your family, you know best. That is the simplest matter of fact. But it’s unfortunately more complicated than that. There is so much polar information out there on everything from bananas to vaccines. Who do you trust? How do you even know who to trust? Especially if you have experienced the runaround from the medical system the way I did when my child was unwell? Who do you listen to? Where do you go when you need help?

    The answer to all of these questions should be YOU. You need to be the answer to all of these questions. When you are this is when you become the leader of your family’s wellness.

    Maybe you are in the thick of living an unwell life. Maybe your child is suffering from an itchy rash or chronic ear infections, maybe they can’t sleep. Maybe they have tested positive to multiple allergies but avoiding those allergens hasn’t really made a difference.

    It is never too late to become a leader. In this episode we talk about how to do this no matter where you are in your family’s wellness journey.

    Episode 43: What Your Child's Poop Can Tell You

    Episode 43: What Your Child's Poop Can Tell You

    In this week's podcast episode I teach you how to become a poo detective. Yes, you read that right. A Poo Detective. You might be thinking, ‘Why would I want to do that?’. Well, inspecting your kids' poop is a great way of uncovering what's going on internally for your child.

    As a naturopath, I love the subject of poo because it offers a glimpse into the inner workings of our kid's bodies and empowers us to learn more about what's going on within our bodies.

    In this episode I will be:

    • Walking you through the Bristol Stool Chart; a medical tool used to assess our stool).
    • Explaining how the Bristol Stool Chart is a great tool to talk to your kids about so they can learn to recognise early symptoms by inspecting their poo. Symptoms such as dehydration, lack of fibre, gastrointestinal infection/imbalance.

    We will also talk through the different “Types” on the Bristol Stool Chart:

    • Type 4 being the ideal type of poo.
    • Type 1 - Type 3 helps us recognise dehydration or lack of fibre, and potentially a lack of elimination which may be indicating that toxins are being reabsorbed in the body.
    • Types 5 - 7 indicate that the bowel is moving too quickly, which results in poor nutrient absorption. It may also indicate an infection, imbalance, or intolerance.
    • I also chat about what your kids poo colour means, including undigested food, dark stool, green or yellow stool or if your child’s poo contains blood or mucus.

    No matter what you detect in your child's poo, our upcoming free online masterclass – 3 Surprisingly Simple Ways to Transform Your Kids Gut Health to improve behaviour, immunity, allergies, and fussy eating will be able to guide you.

    The Masterclass will run via two live sessions:

    Lisa - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)

    Lisa - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)

    Trigger warning: This episode touches on distorted eating. If it is triggering for you, please chat to your doctor.

    This week’s guest is Lisa aka @livesimplyaus, who deals with multiple chemical sensitivity and multiple food intolerances. Her story is the craziest one of the season. No joke. She’s spent her entire life struggling to find foods she could tolerate and never had a nice bathroom experience until she got to her 30’s. At one point Lisa was so severely underweight, at just a bit over 30kg’s, she was hospitalised, it was dismissed as anorexia. Little did everyone know, she had multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) as well as quite a few other crazy internal things going on.

    Chemical sensitivity affects 1 in 5 (18.9%) of Australians, with more than one-third (6.5%) medically diagnosed with MSC. It’s a serious disease that is often caused and worsened by exposure to pesticides, solvents, new building materials and fragranced items. Even low-level exposure can inflict a range of adverse health effects such as migraines, breathing difficulties, cognitive impairment, seizures and asthma attacks.

    This interview will make your jaw drop, and also have so much admiration for Lisa. She hasn’t been able to work full time for years and is now on a path to healing.

    If you think you have MCS, book an appointment with a health care specialist before self-diagnosing. For some informative links:

    Summary

    What we eat is, by far, the main cause of our chronic disorders. And it's important to understand that we're all different… which means that even "healthy" foods can wreak havoc in many of us.

    This is what a food sensitivity is. And while most people are familiar with allergies, that cause swelling and difficulty breathing, you are likely unaware of the food sensitivities that may be behind your bloating, your migraines, stuffy nose, or achy joints…

    In today's episode, functional health expert Reed Davis, walks us through the different lab tests that he's been running for over two decades, helping him get to the root cause of people's problems, even when their doctor has found nothing wrong in their lab results!

    Actionable Steps

    The following are common steps for dealing with food sensitivities, intolerances and minor allergies

    1. Recognize when you're experiencing symptoms of food sensitivity like: runny or stuffy nose, bloating after certain meals, achy joints, puffy face, low energy.
    2. Consider an elimination diet like Whole30, The Wahl's Protocol or even a Carnivore approach.
    3. Review your results with your physician or an FDN certified health coach.
