Episode 116 - Christmas; Or the Good Fairy: A Harriet Beecher Stowe Christmas Story

Episode 116 - Christmas; Or the Good Fairy: A Harriet Beecher Stowe Christmas Story

Jennie and Dianne have made a tradition of sharing classic Christmas stories each year and have chosen an especially lovely to share as we say goodbye to 2022 and hello to the new year. This year the ladies pay a quick visit to the grave of Harriet Beecher Stowe whose novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" made her a household name prior to the American Civil War. She was a woman who stood up for her beliefs her entire life and worked to better the lives of those less fortunate. She was a wife, mother, abolitionist, suffragette, and writer. In addition to "Uncle Tom's Cabin", Harriet Beecher Stowe published more than 30 other books, articles and short stories; including several about Christmas, many with themes of helping others and being thankful for what one has. Dianne and Jennie are grateful for each and every listener this past year. They wish everyone a safe and happy 2023.

    Christmas 2020 Confronting Those Traditions

    Christmas 2020 Confronting Those Traditions

Based on the quote, "Tradition is a guide not a jailer" - Christmas usually carries with it so many traditions that we blindly follow ever year - sometimes to our own detriment - In this episode Chris takes a look at how Christmas may be quite different for some as a result of the impact of Covid this year and also how important it is to question traditions to see how they could be hurting you rather than building you.
Regarding the link Chris mentioned in the podcast about Carol's online - here it is https://edgechur.ch/cah
This will be the last podcast for 2020 - so we just wanted to say thank you to everyone who tuned in. We wish you a happy Christmas and big hopes for 2021!!

Episode 49 - Giving the Right Way for the Right Reason - The Best Sermon Ever Part 5

Episode 49 - Giving the Right Way for the Right Reason - The Best Sermon Ever Part 5

Why do people give? What motivates unbelievers to relinquish their material wealth, resources, time, or even their organs for the good of others? What motivates believers to give? Are the motivations the same? Should they be the same? In continuing in the Sermon on the Mount, in this episode, we look at what Jesus has to say about giving.

Humanitarianism: To Give or Not To Give

Humanitarianism: To Give or Not To Give

Nine is the number of the global humanitarian. In this episode the Empress High Council’s table-talk is based on the premise of humanitarianism, but we disagree about what charity is. Where does charity begin? Who deserves to be on the receiving end of it? Is giving to someone who already has considered a humanitarian effort? The Alchemist cooks up a heated debate about charity beginning in the home, while Jaz Afrodite and the Enricher add hilarious banter sprinkled over the customary gems. You don't want to miss this discussion.

Building a great life full of happy energy with Stephen Morrison

Building a great life full of happy energy with Stephen Morrison

It's hard to imagine that Stephen Jacob James was ever cut from a sports team. He is a young lawyer with Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP. Stephen has an amazing amount of energy; he's not just a busy lawyer, he's also a director with United Way of the Central and South Okanagan / Similkameen, a co-leader of November Project Kelowna, and he both plays and volunteers his time with Okanagan College Basketball and UBC Okanagan Heat. We talk about overcoming the rejection of getting cut from your high school team and going on to become a champion; coping with personal setbacks and depression in order to build an amazing, full and happy life. I am very jealous of Stephen's hair, which he gets done at Man Made Barber & Supply.

Using tech to do a lot of good with Sheldon Gardiner

I had a great conversation with Sheldon Gardiner from Do Some Good . We talked about his innovative use of technology to connect local businesses with charitable organizations in and around Kelowna. We discuss the fact that as citizens, our health, happiness and security depend on the strength of our community. Businesses who demonstrate a strong commitment to the community should be recognized for their actions, and we discuss some very practical tools for them do exactly that.
