The Maps App is Becoming A Social Media Tool

The Maps App is Becoming A Social Media Tool

    Yep, you heard that right.

It's a new, under-the-radar shift (that Google didn't announce) that provides a "newsfeed" of sorts of content from friends and nearby businesses.

Which has definite implications for how you operate your GMB profile.

I love nerding out about this stuff.

Perhaps like you do with the tax code (and I am increasingly nerdy about that as well) ... and it's why I am drawn to people who have similar nerdy intentions.

There is a subtle (but vast) difference between working with companies and people for whom you are a notch on their business bedpost -- and those who are really in it to serve.

Jassen Bowman is one of those who is in it to serve. (He's also a big nerd, and I mean that with great respect and affection.)

So when he reached out after some recent emails of mine that he wanted to host a regular webinar series with me about the mechanics of online marketing, I knew it would be a gas.

We’re discussing the new, subtle developments about the REAL drivers of online marketing success. My Director of Search, Christian will be with us too.

No hype, no pre-planned sales pitch ... just pure, nerdy marketing fun.

Jassen is a particular expert in the resolution space, and has a large following among those who serve those clients -- so he'd be a good one to connect with if you want to discover better ways to operate within those cases.

In this webinar we have a particular focus on local listings, GMB, and SEO nerdiness. You will WANT to hear what we talk about ... some of this stuff is barreling at you fast, and you'll want to be in the loop.

Google My Business - Location IDs and Wrong Keywords in GMB Insights Data

Google My Business - Location IDs and Wrong Keywords in GMB Insights Data
In this podcast by Bill Hartzer, Bill talks about Google My Business short names, location IDs, and keyword insights. There is an issue that allows someone to change the location ID in a GMB short name URL that then causes Google My Business to wrongly report that keyword as being associated with a particular Google My Business listing. We don't know the implications of changing the keywords and location ID, but they are being reported as keyword queries. But, if Google My Business is reporting these wrong keywords, then it's quite possible that their GMB algorithm is using that data, as well.

Then start to get posted or published on a lot of other sites out there that validate your entity (Your social media sites are good for this)

    Show Notes with Takeaways:

(1:29) Share a valuable tip you can WOW us with about Local SEO?

    • We’re going further and further into the semantic web with Google's newest algorithm update called BERT -and it’s all about entity validation. I’ve heard you can't optimize for BERT, and that's not true, it's about optimizing an entity-the semantic web entities.
    • One way to optimize semantic web entities is through structured data.
    • Iframes act as dofollow links-bidirectional dofollow links.

(3:25) Can you breakdown a little more what the semantic web is and how we’ve had this move toward entities

    • Semantic web is: a shift from strings to things. Meaning: Google has shifted from using a query of search strings of keywords to things, which its identifying as objects or entities.
    • For the semantic web to understand how there is a relationship between these objects structured data must be used.

(7:45) Can you give some tips on where you would start on establishing their entity?

    • It’s going to start with your “money site” your self hosted site, and

Introductions: Bill Slawski blogs on SEO By the SEA and is Director of SEO Research at Go Fish Digital and Doc Sheldon owns Search News Central. Terry Van Horne is the webmaster and content director at SEO Dojo Radio and founder of SEO Pros and Steve Gerencser is owner of Steam Driven Media. 00:52 SEO Myths and Critical Thinking: Bill started the discussion off the by mentioning his post A Guide to the Biggest SEO Myths on The Web. For the most part this was a theme throughout most of the show. Doc also has written a book about critical thinking. 2:45 More on LSI Keywords Bill?: As part of the SEO myths discussion Bill again touched on why LSI Keywords Tools and posts are mostly made up nonsense 08:40 The SEO Skills Debate Continues: As the discussion turned to some of the myths Terry expressed his feeling that part of the problem with critical thinking about SEO is that many do not really understand much about computers, HTML and how a search engine works. Part of the knowledge problem is unlike the early days of SEO where there was very little specialization so a broad knowledge of many things was required. In the modern era there is far more specialization so a little understanding of these skills goes a long ways since specialists often implement the SEO's plan and recommendations. 14:59 Value of Hiring an SEO Agency: It was noted during the discussion of specialists that this was one of the benefits to hiring an SEO agency. 17:53 SEO Myths and Critical Thinking: Back to critical thinking discussion. 27:37 Twitter Chat: Next Bill asked the group about their experiences with Twitter chats. 31:08 NoFollow was Always a Hint not a Command: Bill asked the group their thoughts on the changes to Nofollow and it's replacement. 37:00 YouTube Channel Subscription Program: Steve talked about the subscription service provided by YouTube. 39:52 Contacting Paid Platforms: Discussion about contacting Adwords and Facebook. 43:35 Google's October Core Update: Bill asked if anyone was seeing flux from the October Core update. This update can be expected every year until Google tells us differently. The panel spent most of this discussion about why this should be expected. 50:40 Value of Ranking Report: Terry and Doc continue the discussion of the value of ranking reports. Terry detailed his method which removes many of the variables that can affect the reports.
