In today's episode, we're diving into the importance of owning your own narrative and speaking up for yourself. Co-host, Tywauna Wilson shares practical strategies and tips to help you assert yourself with grace and confidence. This episode was inspired by a question sparked during a recent emerging leaders panel discussion, that asked... "What advice would you give your younger self ?" It became clear that speaking up for ourselves is a fundamental skill that many struggle with. This episode will cover the reasons behind this struggle and how we can overcome them.

Here are a few of the strategies to help you own your own narrative with grace and assertiveness but you have to listen to the whole episode to get all of them 🎙️

    • Choose the right moment: Timing is crucial when speaking up.

Learning from Dan Toomey, the creator bridging comedy and business news

Today’s guest belongs on SNL. He’s a comedian, creator and writer. What I love most about his work is how he bridges business news with comedy that helps the average person understand the state of the world. Today’s guest is most well know for his role in Morning Brew’s short form videos — I bet you’ve received a good belly laugh after watching one of his videos on your FYP. Recently, he started working on a long form video project called good work, which is doing numbers! This creator is very underrated.

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: How Would It Feel to Say No!

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: How Would It Feel to Say No!

Hello to you listening in Llanrhystud, Wales UK

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Here’s a scary thought: Saying No to someone when we're used to saying Yes. What are you afraid of?

Many of us, especially girls, are taught that saying Yes is right, good, proper, helpful even and saying No is just plain wrong. The problem is the more we say Yes when we mean No we forget how to make choices in our own best interest and well-being. This self-sabotage robs us of our ability to choose wisely, of our personal power, of our legitimate right to say No with clarity, confidence, and conviction.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with agreeing to a request from certain people in our lives so long as we are not limited in our options, feeling compelled, thinking we will be rejected or worse.  It takes practice to practice No. What do you get? What do you want? Name it! Claim it!

Practical Tip: A simple response to a request to take on work or favors you want to decline is to say, “No. It’s good work; but it’s not my work.”

Question: How does it feel to value and appreciate your own good self saying what you mean and meaning what you say?

How Do You Know if Your Work is Good?

Thank you for  over 5,000+ listens and  another 5,000+ views on YouTube so far!

In today’s episode we'll look at why making "good" work isn't the best goal to have. We'll look at more helpful ways to judge whether our work is WORKING or not. This will help you become better at critiquing your own work, and being more objective about it. Also: what self-taught illustrators miss out on by not going to art school; why open briefs are a nightmare for me, and what happened when a hamburger restaurant asked me to make "some wall art" for them.

Episode 236 - How to Create Good Work and Good Rest with Andy Crouch

We talk a lot about good work as entrepreneurs driven by our faith, but how does rest play into our roles?

In this special episode, author and frequent contributor to the show, Andy Crouch, explains how we have a duty to not just create good work but to create good rest as well. For him, the two go together: “good rest is the fruitful contemplation of good work.”

BTW 60: Knight of Pentacles – Let Your Pleasure Guide You

BTW 60: Knight of Pentacles – Let Your Pleasure Guide You

One of the most common questions for tarot readers is about how people can find ways to make a living doing what they love. In this episode, we talk about how the Knight of Pentacles attempts to answer that question, and get to some ecology and mythology along the way. We discuss the Bee Goddesses of ancient Crete, pollinators, the Great Plains buffalo, astrological correspondences, and where the bulls and the bees meet in the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

This episode is dedicated to Amanda's kitty familiar, Pagan, who passed from this world in the early hours of January 12th, and all the listeners who have recently lost their loved ones. We send out our gratitude to all the Between the Worlds listeners who have offered their support and care, with special thanks to Nick Mattos and the Shift Network who generously sponsored a grove of 11 trees in the Superior National Forest in Pagan's honor. We dedicate the grove to all who are missing their loved ones right now.

Breaking Away From Not Being Yourself: The Little Girl Inside You Is Welcome At My Lunch Table

Breaking Away From Not Being Yourself: The Little Girl Inside You Is Welcome At My Lunch Table

So many of us have a little girl that lives inside our hearts. A little girl who could not show the world who she was when we were young because she was misunderstood, told she was too sensitive, and potentially ostracized from peer groups and family.  Maybe she was banished from the lunch table.

So, that little girl got small to meet the needs and desires of others who didn't have the capacity to meet her needs.  It takes self-compassion to cradle that little girl inside. And it takes courage to finally break away from not being yourself, as a grown woman.

In this episode, Jessica tells the story of the little girl who lives in her heart; the little girl she's learned how to love by letting go of the messaging she received through much of her life that she was too much.

Also, some thoughts on how fucking up is a necessary part of self-growth, and will most definitely be a part of the anti-racist work that white women are being called to do right now.  It helps if we can do this work together, as amazing women keeping each other honest.  Jessica is committed to showing you her flaws as she grows, with the hopes that you won't be afraid to do the same.

And if you are afraid, that's okay. Jessica is too.  But let's do it anyway. Together.

P.S. The red pills Jessica mentions taking are a reference to The Matrix.  Not actual red pills.

    Making work that matters

    Making work that matters

Creativity matters now more than ever. But for too long we’ve been told that it’s a mysterious gift granted to a select few. Nonsense, says Seth Godin. Creativity is a choice.

The turbulent events of 2020 have presented an opportunity for pause and self-reflection. A moment to look at our lives, and to ask what truly gives them meaning and purpose.

In the face of crisis and constraint, many people have been moved to rediscover their innate creativity. To renew their commitment to doing good work that matters. To seek new sources of connection with others. And new ways to apply creative thinking to the challenges of our times.

Seth Godin and Adam Grant are two of the world’s leading thinkers on good work and creativity. Their writings and teaching have helped millions put the desire to lead a more creative and generous life into daily practice.

To celebrate the publication of Seth Godin’s new book The Practice, they come together for an exclusive, unmissable RSA conversation.

Join these two masters of their craft to learn how to find your voice, figure out the change you seek to make, and commit to impact.

2018-07-08 – What God is expecting from me?

2018-07-08 – What God is expecting from me?
What God is expecting from me? What could this powerful God expect from me, a simple human? Good news! Although we were the people under the leadership of ourselves and the devil, God sent His Son to rescue us! Do you think that God did everything for no reason? NO!

We are to serve the Glory of God.

In Joppa there was a woman named Tabitha. She was a simple woman but even though she was not rich, she did good things for everyone around her. She became sick and died. Peter came and told her to get up and she did. This was a great thing. But it wasn’t for her benefit, or even for the benefit of those she touched. It was for the Glory of God. This is what people will notice. It is time for us to take action. So people will notice. Do something that has value to God.

It is good for you to go to church but God wants more. He wants you to go further. He wants you to touch the people around you.

Everyone in church looks so holy, but when you ask the people around them it is something different. This is the face that you are actually showing on behalf of God. This does not reflect well on God.

There was a widow with a daughter. She had a sewing machine. During the war she buried the machine. This was very valuable. An evangelist came to her town and preached. She dug up the machine and gave it to the church. Seven months later her daughter became very sick. The doctors tried to help but the daughter died. The woman was crying “My machine!” She was reminding God that she gave away her machine for the church. God heard he pleas and answered. So a man came and prayed for the girl. The doctors were preparing her for burial but allowed the man to pray. She came back to life! God honors those who honor Him!

The bible says that we will see the difference between those who serve Him and those who do not. But these days it is hard to see the difference. The church in the world and the world in the church. There is much confusion.

The time has come to stand up and show the glory of the Lord. We need to be different from other people. We need to do good things. If we aren’t doing anything good for God, He may see you as useless. This is a big danger.

Yeah, yeah, another unenlightened man said something shocking about a woman's place in the world. How do we help people be teachable in these moments? We don't know the answer, but we banter about it today. We gush about Radio Kingston and the power in community radio to present diverse voices and stories so that we can all live more happily together!

Executive director and landscape designer at Earth Designs Cooperative, Aja Hudson joins us in studio and talks about how she learned to prioritize life after cancer with a young daughter by building a worker cooperative and why it's important for us to start moving towards the cooperative model of living and working.

Emily Vail, Estuary Watershed Outreach Specialist at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and swing dancer and teacher at Uptown Swing, talks about her work studying streams and how this work helps connect the dots across many facets of where we live as she learned when studying the Tannery Brook in Kingston, NY.

Next week we hear interviews with New Paltz High Schoolers Jordan and Emma about their involvement with Girl's Inc. and their experience making their own podcasts on Toxic Masculinity and Conditioning Sexism as well as Allison Lieber who licenses music for bands. Until then, uplift yourself and love one another.
