EP. 9 - Ho Ho Ho Holy Sh*t!!!!

EP. 9 - Ho Ho Ho Holy Sh*t!!!!

Well it's that time of the year again, our tree is up, our stockings are hung and our skinny legs are shaking on that lighter putting the lights up. This week go shot for shot for our most favorite Christmas movies, did yours make the cut? We sit next to the fire and listen to our police scanner. Then we swipe left and right hoping to find our match! Enjoy!

31 - Susan Logoreci - Artist - Your Biggest “Flaw” Is Actually A Neon Sign Pointing To Your Greatest Gift

31 - Susan Logoreci - Artist - Your Biggest “Flaw” Is Actually A Neon Sign Pointing To Your Greatest Gift

Everyone has something of value to say in the massive conversation we call 'ART' that has been taking place since humans began. Sometimes though, our perceived flaws, prevent us from finding our voice to express what is inside us, stopping us from participating in this conversation. Being different/flawed is an asset. This is a powerful conversation about how to find our way to seeing our flaws for what they really are, our superpowers, so that we can bust out and be a part of this universal conversation.

We all have the right to call ourselves artists even without degrees - but with that comes a responsibility and Susan tells us what she feels those responsibilities are - this was one of the deepest and most significant explanations of this I have ever heard and I cant wait to hear how it landed for you.

Please find the post about her episode on Instagram @kateshepherdcreative or @thecreativegeniuspodcast and leave a comment sharing what came up for you when she said this!

Susan speaks directly to the listener who is yearning to take the next step into a life as a full time artist. Practical thoughtful mentoring type things, that are enormously helpful.

There is some in depth homework including two weeks worth of FREE WORKSHEETS you can do at home to help you find out what "flaws" are holding you back and what your superpowers actually are so that you can begin to say what you came here to say in this life. Powerful stuff.

    ABOUT SUSAN LOGORECI

Susan Logoreci, a wildly successful commercial and public artist, has an eye condition (Strabismus) that almost prevented her from being able to make art at all. And paradoxically, as we'll hear, was the very thing that has led her to be the artist she has become.

Her drawings have been seen in Art in America, the Los Angeles Times, Harper’s Magazine, as well as many other periodicals. She has drawings in several collections including the U.S. State Department, City National Bank, Creative Artist’s Agency, Marriott and Hilton Hotels, Los Angeles Metro, Los Angeles County Arts Commission and in several law and urban design firms. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

She has also completed several public projects in hospitals, light rail stations and airports. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Her art comes down to this: she wants the viewer to feel the delight and wonder of places and at the same time be inspired to take care of them and always be making them better.

    WHAT WE TALK ABOUT

    -Where creative impulses come from

-The conflict between realism and abstraction in art

-Intentionally looking for new ways to see things

-The eye condition she has (Strabismus) causes her to not see three dimensionally this “failure” to interpret every day life the way the rest of us do led her to not only see the world but also create art in a way that is completely unique to her. The things we think are our impediments, are pointing us to our superpowers

-Accessing your ‘inner delinquent’ to unleash creativity

-seeing differently as an artist is an asset - how can you use it

-The way you are different is an asset - and how you can use it.

-Accessible tips and suggestions for getting grants and finding your path to becoming a public artist - her absolutely brilliant idea for the person who wants to get into making public art

-How she designed her largest public art project a staggering 10,000 square foot with 28 wall pieces in Phoenix airport!

-The collective amnesia that happens to us between childhood and adulthood  around creativity. What she thinks are the causes of it, and the ways we can change it.

Challenge to all listeners! If you felt a little something inside you perk up when Susan was talking about getting grants to do public art like on the utility boxes - challenge - go Find out how public art is governed in your area and apply! And join the creative genius family on facebook and share your experience, learnings and journey with it

    Episode #26: Wicced (Part 1) 🇺🇸🇰🇭

    Episode #26: Wicced (Part 1) 🇺🇸🇰🇭

I’m honored to introduce you to my great friend and brother, Kalvin Hang, or Wicced as he’s known.

Wicced was born in a refugee camp in Thailand as his parents escaped war-torn Cambodia, then emigrated to California, where he grew up in San Diego.

From dire poverty to gang violence to prison, to say Wicced had it tough is an understatement. He was even thrown in an immigration prison and deported to Cambodia, never allowed to return to the U.S. - even though he’d never actually lived in Cambodia.

But instead of seeing himself as a victim or shying away from adversity, Wicced thrived on it, becoming a community leader and bridge between two worlds: Cambodia and the U.S., the streets and the bustling business world.

Now, Wicced is thriving in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. But never forgets where he’s from, always judging himself on the scales of karma. He’s equal parts fearless and compassionate, a man of furious action while at the same time deeply introspective.

But one thing is for sure – if Wicced is your friend, he’s always got your back.

Thanks for listening to this part one of my interview with Wicced and look for part two coming very soon.

And mad love to Cambodia and the Deportees!

    -Norm Schriever

    217: 3 Strikes - 24 years - and now freedom:The story of Allen McIntosh

    217: 3 Strikes - 24 years - and now freedom:The story of Allen McIntosh

California's Three Strikes law began in 1994. Under this law, a person convicted of any new felony, while having a prior felony conviction, would be sentenced to state prison for twice the term otherwise provided for the crime.

If the defendant was convicted of any felony with two or more prior strikes, the law mandated a state prison term of at least 25 years to life. The law was designed to be “tough on crime,” but in reality, it was tough on Black and Latino communities.

African Americans make up the largest group of second and third strikers followed by Latinos. According to a study by the Justice Policy Institute, Black people are disproportionately impacted by the three-strikes law. Although only 6.5% of California’s population is Black, 44.7% of inmates serving out sentences for third strikes are Black.

These are the statistics Allan McIntosh fell victim to in 1998. A previous robbery and theft conviction were his first two strikes. McIntosh was searched after being stopped by LBPD for riding his bike with a broken light and not using the crosswalk. McIntosh, who was living in a gang-infested community, had a weapon. That was his third strike and he was sentenced to 25 years to life on a non-violent charge.

Luckily, McIntosh was a cellmate with Cesar McDowell who started Unite the People to help provide aid to people who were unjustly sentenced. With the help of McDowell and a documentary made about McIntosh’s life called Q-Ball, Allen McIntosh will be released from prison on Monday, June 29, 2022.

On today’s episode of “The Word” podcast, Jackie Rae speaks with Unite the People Founder Cesar McDowell and Macintosh’s wife Daviena to discuss how they reached this point.

You can learn more about Unite the People here.

    Mike Davis of Secret Hate

Today we are in Oceanside visiting with singer of Secret Hate, Mike Davis.  Whether it being yelled at in the water in Seal Beach, not welcomed by the LA punks at shows, or getting caught in-between the gang fights at Poly High, Mike knew what it was like to be an outsider. He funneled that negativity into his passion for surfing and being in a punk band.  Mike grew up surfing Seal Beach by way of the bus from Long Beach, and he bought his 1st board from Carl's Bait and Tackle on Seal Beach pier. He talks about how surfing has always been there for him and literally saved his life. And did Sublime really use one of his songs on their triple platinum album? Find out!!!

211: This reverend says politicians continue to fail the Black community, so he's running for congress

Rev. Moses Summerville has strong views on health care and the wage gap. He believes in women’s rights, and he is pro-Black. But, in a time when politicians are clamoring for the Black vote, he sees most offering nothing more than lip service.

How can that change? Summerville says he's tried to set an example in his own longshot campaign for the 42nd Congressional District.

In this week's "The Word" podcast, Summerville explains his approach and how he hopes to be a leader in the Black community.

    Dark Totem

    Dark Totem

Jana Opincariu is an award winning artist with paintings recognized across the southwest and paintings that have found their home around the globe. She creates surreal and fantastical images of human bodies, objects and animals. As a painter, she strives to exemplify what it means to become vulnerable and romanticize it. She does this by creating hyper-realistic portraits of people, creatures and bodies, illustrating lucid dreams and making delicate surreal images that demonstrate the lust and chaos we face in day to day life.

In February, Jana won Best of Show and Most Meaningful artwork for her painting Fuck Vegas of the "Sensuality in ART 2022” show at Hellada Gallery.

In her artist statement Jana said, “I imagine that there is no break from my creations and I am my creations and my creations are me. Therefore, every piece I do is a self-portrait.”

Daniel Kathalynas is an award-winning international artist. He works in painting, three dimensional art, sculptural wall hanging, hand-painted animation, music, and symbolic use of materials, 2D rendering, filmmaking and stop motion animation.

In December 2021, his film  Flowering won 2nd place at the Santa Fe 3-minute Film Festival.

Daniel’s method begins in a silent-mind meditation then he allows the first higher thought that enters his mind to forge the direction of the artwork.

Currently, Daniel is traveling across the country and filming short videos called The Roaming Artist – American Odyssey where he discusses his inspirational process, the beauty of national landmarks, local culture and live painting.

The first Totem took place in Albuquerque at Factory on 5th in September, 2019. It was such a success they decided to bring it to Hellada in Long Beach.

Dark Totem is about power imagery: such as animals, elements, or, representative of humans' higher aspect, or, walking into the new realm.

Dark Totem brings dark themes and is not as light hearted. It's emotional, with undertones of the original Totem, including images of humans, animals and delicate things. Attendees will also see some of the artwork from the original Totem.
