Lisa Frankenstein (2024): "All That And A Can Of Beans"
Obsession Month may be almost over, but if Lisa Frankenstein (2024) has taught us anything, it's that not even death is permanent. For our last episode all about love that crosses the line, we knew we had to cover Diablo Cody's new horror romance. Starring scream queen Kathryn Newton and a nearly mute Cole Sprouse (possibly the ideal Cole Sprouse), this fantastical flick combines the bright color palette of the '80s with the weird world of Jennifer's Body — and then brings it all to life with a broken tanning bed. We don't know if it's too soon to declare this movie a cult classic, but one thing we can say with confidence is that it's definitely going to join our Spooky Tuesday sleepover lineup.

Jacob Elordi to replace Andrew Garfield as ‘Frankenstein's’ Monster in the upcoming Netflix film

Jacob Elordi to replace Andrew Garfield as ‘Frankenstein's’ Monster in the upcoming Netflix film
Jacob Elordi is set to play Frankenstein's Monster in the upcoming Netflix film directed by Guillermo Del Toro. He will be stepping in for Andrew Garfield who had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts. The highly anticipated project, also featuring Oscar Isaac as the title character and Pearl actor Mia Goth as the female lead, is a significant endeavour for Del Toro, who has also contributed to the screenplay. The film promises a fresh perspective on the classic gothic tale written by Mary Shelley where the monster is more humanised. Additional cast members include Felix Kammerer, Christoph Waltz, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery. As fans eagerly await more updates on this passionate project, they are encouraged to explore Elordi's previous work, particularly his role in Saltburn, currently available for streaming on Prime Video.

The experiment has been attempted by generations of mad scientists, but never successfully accomplished: the creation of a Frankenstein! Stephen King gets pedantic about terminology.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is often cited as the first science fiction novel and is certainly one of the most important and influential horror novels ever written. Shelley wrote it at the age of 18 (THAT'S LESS THAN 19) as part of a ghost-story writing competition with her pals. It has been adapted to stage and screen countless times, perhaps most notably in James Whale's 1931 film adaptation starring Boris Karloff as the trope-codifying flat-headed monster. The original novel is in the public domain and can be found on Project Gutenberg at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/41445

Ep. 198: Everything Turns Grey - Goth Rock vol. V

This week’s show kicks off our annual celebration of Gothtober! Your favorite fiends provide a true appreciation of the grim and ghastly as they don all-black garb, guy-liner, and a healthy dose of black no. 1 on their mop tops. That’s right, everything turns grey as they once again explore the dark and ethereal world of Goth Rock…

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection, an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Now After Nothing – “Sick Fix” from Sick Fix - Single (2023)
    2. Marble Orchard – “We Who Were Born To Suffer” from Building Monuments To Misery (2023)
    3. The Damned – “Bad Weather Girl” from Darkadelic (2023)
    4. Wailin Storms – “In The Heart Of The Sea” from The Silver Snake Unfolds (2022)
    5. Unto Others – “Out In The Graveyard” from I Believe In Halloween (2021)
    6. De Arma – “Illusions Of Love” from Strayed In The Shadows (2021)
    7. The Swear – “Love Moves On” from Love Moves On - single (2014)

    Frankenstein (1818)

    Frankenstein (1818)

Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 novel written by English author Mary Shelley. It recounts the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature through an unorthodox scientific experiment. Though Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement, some scholars have argued for it as the first true science-fiction story. The novel has had a considerable influence on literature and on popular culture, spawning a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays. Since the publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" has often been used, erroneously, to refer to the monster, rather than to his creator.

With me today is Dr. Glynis Ridley, Professor of English at the University of Louisville. Glynis received her Ph.D. from Trinity College, Oxford. She is best known as the author of Clara’s Grand Tour: Travels with a Rhinoceros in Eighteenth-Century Europe, which was winner of the Institute of Historical Research Prize.

Ep 23: Fictitious and Real Monsters: Mary Shelley & The Cheshire Murders

Ep 23: Fictitious and Real Monsters: Mary Shelley & The Cheshire Murders

This week Taylor goes back to the Gothic tale of Mary and Percy Shelley. There’s a lot of poetry, free love, and that odd ‘poor but rich-poor’ way of traveling around Europe. There’s also so much sadness, many babies that never got to grow up, dreams that never came true, and a string of broken hearts.

But also Frankenstein! It’s a story about a man who gave humanity science that quite possibly humanity doesn’t deserve. (We’ve been through this with the Curies!)

Farz delves into the randomness of life to tell the story of the murders of the Petit Family in Connecticut - The Cheshire home invasion murders. When two criminals see the Petit family at a store they follow them home and commit the most atrocious crime. It’s ‘In Cold Blood’ all over again - but this time, the police had a chance to save the family, and 110% failed.

    We’re doomed.
