Postpartum recovery involves more than just managing physical symptoms. Taking care of yourself during this time is crucial.

    1. Accept help when it's offered:
      • Don't be ashamed to ask for help when needed.
      • Be open to accepting help from unexpected sources.
      • Challenge the mindset of doing it all alone and set a new norm of accepting help.
    2. Implement the 5/5/5/5 rule:
      • Give your body the attention it needs after childbirth.
      • The rule includes spending 5 days in bed, 5 days on the bed, and 5 days around the bed.
      • Focus on rest, skin-to-skin bonding, breastfeeding, and healing.
    3. Talk to other moms:
      • Seek advice and support from experienced mothers.
      • Join mom groups or online communities to connect with a broader network.
      • Find a safe space where you can ask questions without fear of judgment or shaming.
    4. Prepare your spouse:
      • Communicate your thoughts, feelings, and needs to your partner.
      • Consider adjusting roles based on what feels natural for both of you.
    5. Rest:
      • Prioritize sleep and rest deep into the postpartum period.
      • Find moments to rest and relax throughout the day.
      • Discover what activities make you feel rejuvenated and decrease stress.
    6. Make a portable postpartum recovery kit:
      • Organize postpartum essentials in a portable caddy.
      • Keep everything easily accessible to make your recovery more convenient.
    7. Get outside:
      • Spend time outside with your baby, even if it's in your backyard or front porch.
      • Fresh air and sunlight can boost your mood and regulate sleep patterns.
      • Avoid seclusion and the feeling of being trapped indoors for too long.
    8. Don't get lost in opinions. Get informed, and make your own:
      • Recognize that there are diverse opinions on parenting topics.
      • Trust your instincts and make decisions that feel right for your family.
      • Find a middle ground that aligns with your values and circumstances.
    9. Be gentle with yourself:
      • Understand that hormonal changes and adjusting to postpartum life can be challenging.
      • Practice self-compassion and patience.
      • Take care of your physical and mental well-being as you heal and adapt.
    10. "Take Ten":
      • Take short breaks for yourself to relax and recharge.
      • Choose activities that can't be done while holding or nursing the baby.
      • Encourage your partner to handle baby care during these breaks.
      • Allow yourself time to focus on your own needs and rejuvenate.

    026. How to Get Your Sexy Back After Hardship Without Losing Your Cool

    026. How to Get Your Sexy Back After Hardship Without Losing Your Cool

There are moments in our journey that are truly life-changing. This week, I’m answering a listener question from Ruby, who underwent four years of cancer treatment and is struggling to feel sexy again.

Admittedly, I originally didn’t feel qualified to answer this question, since I have not experienced cancer myself.  But then I thought about it, and decided that falling back in love with ourselves requires the same work and commitment whether you’re finding it post something hugely traumatic like fighting cancer, or if you’ve lost your partner, your home, or whatever you might be struggling to come back from.  So that said, I think you will find my advice helpful if you’re having trouble falling back in love with yourself too.

    We talk about:

    • [2:55] Ruby’s question
    • [7:45] Knowing your worth and value as a whole person
    • [15:00] Having hard conversations with your partner that will draw you closer together
    • [19:40] Tips to process hardship and get your sexy back

Are mealtimes a battleground at your house? Do you constantly worry whether your kids are eating enough?

Dr. Amy shares 4 tips to reframe the approach to meal times to make it both fun and productive. Wanting to make sure our kids have adequate nutrition is a strong and universal drive. She recommends staying objective, clearly dividing the duties between the adults and children when it comes to nutrition, and shift towards a lighthearted approach when it comes to getting results. Here's a bit of a transcript. You can read the full interview at MomCaveTV.com:

Jen: I’m Jen and I’m here with Renee from The Mom Room, one of the greatest mom podcasts ever. Hey, Renee!

Renee Reina: Hi, how’s it going?

Jen: Oh, it’s gone pretty well, considering I forgot a pediatrician appointment this morning and I wanted to be here with you, so I was like rush rush rush rush! And now I’m here, and we can just have fun and talk.

    Renee Reina: Yes, exactly.

    Unlikely Covid Shortages… Pumpkins??

Jen: What are you up to today?

Renee Reina: My in-laws are coming in this evening from Vancouver, so they’re going to be here for Halloween fun. I need to go find some pumpkins after this. I think my husband was saying that a lot of the places look like they’re selling out of pumpkins, so I’m going to be on a pumpkin mission.

Jen: Are the pumpkins going to be one of those things that we’re having a low supply of because of COVID? Is COVID affecting pumpkins?

Renee Reina: You know what? That’s a good question. I don’t know. Maybe we’re late buying them. But maybe there is a shortage.

Jen: We just blame COVID for everything. This was the first year I grew pumpkins and I have to tell you, it’s very satisfying. Pumpkins grow fast. And they grow huge. And it’s very magical to have pumpkins just outside your window. So next year, I’m going to plan a whole patch of pumpkins.

    Renee Reina: That’s awesome.

Jen: I will give you a free pumpkin. Yes. Somebody was saying on Instagram, they’ve heard pumpkins are in short supply.

    Renee Reina: Oh, wow. Interesting.

We have lots of small ones. I buy them because I see them at the grocery store and I feel like we need them. And Milo’s been painting them, but the larger ones are harder to find.

Jen: Okay, well, we may have a new business. Someone said it’s all the photographers buying them...

6 reasons to take your kid to the emergency room

What is a true health emergency for kids that requires a trip to the emergency room (ER)?

It can be hard to tell, from all the day-to-day runny noses and falls and scrapes, when a true health emergency arises. Dr. Amy has always wanted to help parents avoid unnecessary trips to the ER, leading her to found Kinder Digital Pediatric Clinic, where parents can get in touch easily with their own pediatrician to check if something is indeed an urgent problem.

However, it's also important to not miss the situations where such a trip is necessary. In this episode, Dr. Amy goes over 6 common child-specific conditions where a trip to the ER is always needed, and a speedy response might be crucial. They range from allergic reactions, breathing issues, mental changes and much more.

Disclaimer: the does not constitute an exhaustive list of relevant emergent situations, and cannot be used in place of a consultation with your own pediatrician. Information from this podcast are for entertainment purposes only, and is not to be taken as medical advice.
