Ep. 6 | Sally Wolf on Dancing Through Cancer and Using Positive Psychology to Thrive Amidst Life’s Challenges

Ep. 6 | Sally Wolf on Dancing Through Cancer and Using Positive Psychology to Thrive Amidst Life’s Challenges

In this episode I speak with Sally Wolf, a wellbeing advisor, advocate and speaker who empowers others to flourish both personally and professionally through her company, LightWorks. Sally leaned into this work after studying positive psychology in 2016, shortly after her first diagnosis with breast cancer. Reflecting back on her seven years as a breast cancer patient, survivor, and now Stage IV thriver, Sally openly discusses dancing her way through cancer, finding deep meaning in difficult life moments, and choosing the lens through which we go - and grow - through our biggest obstacles.

    We speak about:

    • Receiving her first cancer diagnosis in 2015, and how dance has been a significant part of Sally's healing journey
    • Identifying tools that enable us to flourish in life, and how building that foundation of self-awareness can support us in challenging moments
    • Exploring a changing body during cancer treatment
    • Riding the post-head-shave emotional roller coaster of adrenaline rush to paralysis, and how a friend helped her move again
    • Feeling a responsibility to share and connect with those facing cancer in the same way others supported her during treatment
    • Experiencing the local recurrence of a breast cancer tumor even after a double mastectomy
    • Identifying people who can be sources of support
    • Listening to and acting on intuition when something is off in one’s body, even if specialists and doctors aren’t concerned
    • Choosing to seek - and see - the ‘light’ in life, even when living with Stage IV cancer
    • Recognizing post-traumatic growth (PTG) and its connection to resilience
    • Celebrating a career pivot: Sally’s work in bringing positive psychology to the corporate world

S2 MSS 06: How To Spot Emotional Abusers?

S2 MSS 06: How To Spot Emotional Abusers?

    Abuse is abuse period.

Abuse is an abuse be it emotionally, mentally or psychologically, and physically. When a person is emotionally abusive, this person was emotionally abused as a child. These are all learned behaviours and it is the same thing with someone that physically abuses someone else. It is the same thing as someone who is a narcissist or a psychopath and again these are learned behaviour in childhood. People who are born with a severe mental illness is very small. Children who are living in such households pick up such abusive behaviours from their parents or siblings or the people who raised them or whoever they were around with they might not have seen all of these tactics but they saw enough to learn what emotional abuse is and now they go about life thinking it is normal.

in this episode you will discover:

MSS 04: The Most Important Part Of You

MSS 04: The Most Important Part Of You

In this episode I pry open the brain to discover what lies inside this most powerful organ that's ever created.

The brain is arguably the most important organ in the human body. It controls and coordinates actions and reactions, allows us to think and feel, and enables us to have memories and feelings—all the things that make us human.

The brain contains about 100 billion microscopic cells called neurons & communicate in trillions of connections called synapses.

In this episode you will discover why our diet has anything to do with our brain.

You will get to realize why there is a need to understand the relationship with your foods; is it healthy or unhealthy?

You love the foods you eat but do they love you back?

Does eating junk, crappy or processed food affect your brain?

What is the relationship between the gut-brain axis?

What are the healthy foods for our brain?

I share about Dr Daniel Amen's work. I am a #diehardfan. Do check out his Ted talks.

MSS 03: Health Coaching Is Effective. Should You Try It?

MSS 03: Health Coaching Is Effective. Should You Try It?

In this episode I explore health coaching and its effectiveness so should you try it?

What is a health and wellness coach? What is the scope of a health and wellness coach?

What are the differences between a life coach and a health and wellness coach?

You will hear an example which I distinctly spelled out the differences between a coach and an expert.

In this episode you will discover that empowerment is the key word used in coaching. A coach empowers and guides you to find the solutions for your own issues.

The title "Coach" is loosely and widely used nowadays so it is imperative to find a certified coach who knows what he or she is doing. The education that the coach went through is highly critical. It is essential to study the background of the coach's coaching credentials; the coaching school he or she graduated from, content and coaching techniques.

Thank you so much for checking out this episode of Make Smart Sexy. I hope this episode has equipped you with the basic knowledge about health and wellness coaching.

How can you best deal with a person in your team who is a permanent grump? Someone who constantly complains and whines about things. A pessimist with such negative energy that he or she pulls the rest of the team down at the drop of a hat. A person who sucks the energy out of a room as soon as he or she enters it.

This podcast examines this problem based on the four core needs we have on the job. When these core needs are met, people are “fulfilled”, which kindles motivation and boosts overall engagement.

In this podcast I shed light on these four core needs and provide ideas on how to tackle this issue from two different perspectives.

First, from a leadership point of view, what core needs of my team are being met or not met? What support can I provide? How do I sit down and discuss this with someone?

Secondly, from a personal perspective, if one or more of your needs are not being met, it means stepping up to bat and taking responsibility for your life and finding solutions that work for you = taking ownership for your life and for your own happiness.

Gratitude is strongly correlated to being an optimist and thriving. Gratitude is one of the ten EMOTIONS which form the foundation of positive mindedness (the other nine are listed in this podcast...). Of these ten emotions, gratitude has been shown to be one of the most important as it has the highest leverage on your internal positivity scale. Positivity is good for your physical and mental well-being (I'll tell you exactly why in this podcast...).

So what's the big deal about gratitude? Gratitude is others-directed and acknowledges the fact that we wouldn't be where we are in life or have what we have without the help, support or contribution of someone else (hence, others-directed and not self-directed). Psychologists argue that it is this gratefulness and humbleness which build overall positivity.

    Gratitude is trainable. It's learnable. It's buildable. It's doable. It's figure-out-able.

This podcast shows the traditional way gratitude has been built in the last decade and shows you a new, more effective method revealed in a recent study at the University of California which - if you try it out - will leave you feeling pretty amazing.

Of the 30 million Power Point presentations given each day, studies estimate that only 3% are able to inspire and motivate the audience and get their message across. The remaining 97% fail to do so. To which group do your presentations belong? To the 3% or to the 97%?

If you'd like to belong to the 3%, this podcast provides you with four concrete approaches to enable you to appeal to all of your audience members. Biologically speaking, each of us an innate preference for learning and absorbing information. We are born with these preferences and anything else feels weird or off and leaves us demotivated or confused.

When a presenter addresses your particular learning preferences, you are easily able to absorb the information and grasp the key learnings and are inspired and motivated. When this doesn't happen, you feel lost, bored, overwhelmed or frustrated (or all of the above).

One of the keys to joining the 3% group of presenters is to address all four learning preferences during the course of your presentation. And this podcast will show you exactly how to do that.
