    Why Overachievers Underperform

    Why Overachievers Underperform

Struggling entrepreneurs often self-sabotage through extreme internal pressure. Learn why amplifying pressures usually backfires and how to shift focus toward actions over outcomes.

    Summary

Entrepreneurs strive for big goals but get stuck in procrastination loops fueled by internal pressure. Unhealthy pressure typically stems from overemphasizing outcomes paired with the fear of failure. This causes hesitation, rushed decisions, missed opportunities, reduced enjoyment, and demoralization.

The root issue is tying self-worth too closely to goal achievement. Failing equates to personal failure, so the pressure compounds. Champions win frequently because they reduce perceived pressure while upholding standards. Steps include recognizing exaggerated importance due to focus illusions, lowering outcome expectations, developing immunity to failure before starting, taking action through repetitions, conditioning over time, and ultimately enjoying the hard work.

Place emphasis on controllable actions, not results. Adopt a “just another shot” mentality like Michael Jordan, where pressure moments feel familiar through practice. Progress requires attempts without self-judgment. Trust the process, reduce paralysis by analysis, and achieve visions through purposeful progress.

    Top 3 Growth Tips

    • [2:55] Focus On Actions Over Outcomes - "Focusing on the outcome right in your emphasis on the outcome, the focusing illusion will make you over emphasize that."
    • [8:22] Repetition Reduces Pressure - "The reason Michael Jordan is able to take that game winning shot and it go in most of the time and also it be another just another shot is because he's gone through hundreds of 1000s of repetitions of that shot."
    • [15:44] Redefine Failure As Inaction - "Somehow, you must make it a win win. Right? And failure must only be not taking action, right. And that's something you can control. So failure is lack of attempts, lack of repetition, lack of practice, lack of process."

Taking The Bite Out Of It

Taking The Bite Out Of It

Welcome to another episode of Navigate the Day, where we dive into the profound wisdom of Seneca and explore ways to bring calmness to the storm of life. Today's passage from Seneca's "Hercules Oetaeus" guides us to understand that facing trials with a calm mind robs misfortune of its strength and burden.

The host introduces the journal prompt for today: "How can I bring a calm mind to tough situations?" A candid exploration follows, recounting personal struggles and triumphs in handling adversities. The narrative reflects on the journey of building tools and skills meant to foster a calm and collected mindset in challenging situations.

Acknowledging a slip in consistency with mindfulness practices, the host emphasizes the importance of progress over perfection. The episode delves into the complexities of fear and anxiety, recognizing the need to break free from limiting beliefs and thought patterns. The host shares insights into the fight-or-flight response morphing into freeze, an aspect they aim to actively work on and improve.

The narrative explores the power of self-image and the impact of negative self-talk. The host recognizes the need for self-compassion and grace while navigating the journey of growth from a challenging place. Practical tools, such as focused breathing and guided meditation, emerge as valuable in calming the mind in various situations.

The episode concludes with a profound reflection on the perception of danger, emphasizing the role of internal dialogue in shaping our experiences. Life, the host suggests, is a dynamic interplay of perception and response, and the exploration of one's inner self is key to understanding purpose and meaning. Join us on Navigate the Day as we embrace the journey of self-exploration, building resilience, and bringing calm to life's toughest situations.

Disowning Outcomes: How Letting Go Unlocks Results (Business Devo)

Disowning Outcomes: How Letting Go Unlocks Results (Business Devo)

    Reference:

    Numbers 10:29

When pursuing big visions, conviction and confidence often precede clarity on details. Relinquishing pressure and ownership over final outcomes can unlock greater performance.

    Summary

This episode analyzes Moses leading thousands towards a Promised Land despite lacking a precise route or endpoint. It explores principles like pursuing callings prior to full clarity, letting go of outcome ownership to reduce pressure, the power of expectations, using God's words to reinforce belief, and recognizing progress happens in milestones.

Modern correlations are made to entrepreneurial ambitions, why reducing overemphasis on results paradoxically improves them, avoiding arrogance, and partnering with God to disown ultimate outcomes. Stories illustrate how expectation edges towards either confidence or arrogance.

Takeaways highlight that confidence building conviction emerges before clarity materializes. Progress happens through milestones rather than static destinations. Finally, pressure reductions allow higher performance when individuals own efforts over results.

    Top 3 Growth Tips

    • Confidence Precedes Clarity [00:08:16] - Moses leverages God's promises prior to clarity on details, as confidence and conviction often emerge before specifics materialize with big visions.
    • Outcomes: Disown Rather Than Own [00:30:14] - Trying to control final results often backfires. Reducing pressure by disowning outcomes while owning efforts paradoxically unlocks greater achievement.
    • Milestones Over Destinations [00:22:37] Expecting a static endpoint limits motivation. Recognizing progress via milestones sustains effort since calls evolve dynamically en route.

[00:00] If you increase the pressure of having to win, you increase the pressure so much, the way to actually win is to reduce the pressure.

[00:29] This is Moses, speaking to his brother in law, we are setting out for the place of which the Lord has said, I will give it to you.

[00:56] This idea of a promise that you feel is yours that you should go and pursue and take, a promise you should pursue.

[03:05] Maybe we would think it was easy, and we wouldn't do the hard work if we knew the endpoint.

[05:22] Confidence and conviction comes before clarity, oftentimes.

[08:16] Confidence, and conviction, in my experience often comes for clarity.

[13:24] He speaks as if it's already done. That is this idea of belief and expectation.

[17:44] The words that Moses uses his vocabulary is a weird sentence.

[22:37] Maybe it's a dynamic calling, versus a static destination.

[25:33] What if we disowned the result? And just owned all the things that lead up to it.

[30:14] What if we let God own the result, and you disown the result?

[31:32] The way to win is actually to reduce the pressure, reduce the magnitude of the outcome.

Ready to challenge the status quo in accessible travel? Join us for a candid conversation with  Carrie-Ann Lightley, Head of Marketing at Accessible. Carrie brings a depth of personal and professional insight as we unpack the necessity for a progressive, rather than perfectionist, approach to accessibility. We tap into the significance of bespoke experiences and information, the fallacy of aiming for "fully accessible" destinations, and the promise of inclusive travel.

Moving the dialogue forward, we discuss the need for inclusive design for disability. Carrie underscores the importance of not just consulting, but co-designing with the disability community. We delve into the dangers of tokenism, the benefits of having internal focus groups, and the immense value of compensating disabled contributors for their invaluable input.

Rounding off our heartfelt exploration, we broach the shifting social model of disability, and the dual impact of technology as a tool and barrier in accessibility. We unpack the biopsychosocial model's recognition of the enduring nature of impairments, even amidst heightened accessibility. We muse over the potential of emerging technologies, and, as always, we extend our deep gratitude to our listeners and encourage continued engagement. So, tune in for this enlightening conversation that champions genuine, considerate, and forward-thinking approaches to accessibility.

    S1EP52 I Choose Love

    S1EP52 I Choose Love

Today I celebrate my one year anniversary of doing this podcast!

I thought it would be a good time to share, as openly and honestly as possible, a time where I wasn't as graceful or loving - I let my frustrations and anger run the show. If I would have remembered "What Would Love Do?" that day may have turned out very differently for both myself and those around me.

Whether you are a long-time listener or brand new, I thank you for tuning in and Happy International Women's Day!

    Sending you so much love!

P.S. I've shared a lot about what has happened to my family and I over the past year, the lessons learned and the practices that helped through it all - so today, why not go back over some of those podcasts that you may have missed?

    Ep. 19 | ... and you're an introverted powerhouse

    Ep. 19 | ... and you're an introverted powerhouse

Maybe you're like me and you're an introverted powerhouse.

Self-awareness and self-acceptance are so clutch. Over the years I have learned that I am introverted and while that was an issue at the start, it's something that I have come to embrace and even consider one of my stronger personality traits.

I love being introverted because we introverts know how to listen and to hear. That totally helps in business. Being comfortable with hushing up and letting others ramble on in peace without feeling guilty can reveal ways that you can serve them and solve problems that they have and ones they may not even realize they have. You become a truly valuable player on their team because at our core most people simply want to be seen, heard and understood. Introverts do that well because we typically build deeper relationships.

People think I am shy and quiet. I am not shy or quiet. It’s just that my thoughts and antics are reserved for things that matter to me, and for people I feel comfortable around. The same can be said for most introverts. We are not the life of the party, until we are the life of the party. Small talk makes itch.

With the understanding of how I function as an introvert, I have worked on structuring my business and personal life in a way that allows my strengths to help me and stops my weaknesses from haunting me. In this podcast I encourage listeners to use your own signature style to win the fight, to accomplish your goals, to grow into the person you were made to be. It’s in you. Tag yourself in. You have everything you need to win.

Ep. 10 | ... and you’ve been obsessed with your weight

Ep. 10 | ... and you’ve been obsessed with your weight

Maybe you're like me and and you've been obsessed with your weight.

This episode is part one of a 4-part series that tackles some of the themes from my book: Secret Donuts: A Journey to Getting Over Your Weight, Aligned with God and into Your Purpose.

This episode goes into detail about the backstory of what inspired me the write the book, what the book is about and I even read the introduction.

I call this book a prerequisite to weight loss. It’s setting a foundation of mind-rightness before body snatched-ness. And I felt like this was necessary because I’ve had seasons when I was fit but still could not shake the need and the obsession to lose more weight. It was never enough. The problem wasn’t the weight but the importance I assigned to my weight.

The final destination of Secret Donuts isn’t to have lost weight by the end of it, it is to get to a mental space where I could take it or leave it. Where the thought of weight loss didn’t consume me, didn’t define me, didn’t define how I felt about myself and didn’t change how I showed up in the world. The point was to get to a space where I had permanently placed God back on the throne in my life and placed myself back on my agenda because I learned to love me as he truly does: unconditionally.

You know who this reminded me of?
Paul and his thorn. Read more about that in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9..

We might be more alike than you think...

Ep. 5 | ... and you have to stop running and hiding

Ep. 5 | ... and you have to stop running and hiding

Maybe you're like me and you have to stop running and hiding.

This week’s episode can be summed up in this scripture:

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven." -Matthew 5:15 (MSG)

If you’re like me you like to lay low and play the background but God is calling you out of your comfort zone and into the open. If you’re like me you’ve been on the run and hiding from the spotlight. If you’re like me, you would rather hide from that light and hide your light, too. If you’re like me, you’ve been comfortable with letting others show up and shine and would rather encourage those God has called to you to turn their attention to those people. And if you’re like me, you’re dead wrong.

We have to stop running and hiding. We have to stop halfway doing what we’ve been called to do. We have to stop playing small. We have to recognize that partial obedience is total disobedience.

You know who this reminded me of?
    King Saul.

Saul stayed slipping and halfway doing what God told him to do. God would tell the Prophet Samuel to give Saul a very thorough specific set of instructions like when he said go down and completely destroy the Amalekites. Saul went down and killed a lot of them but left the King alive (facepalm) as well as kept the best of the plunder (claiming later that he planned to sacrifice it to God). But that wasn’t what God said to do. Samuel let Saul know that obedience is better than sacrifice and that God was displeased with his actions. This was basically the last straw and it led God to remove Saul from his position of power and importance and to replace him with David, another flawed man, but a man after God’s own heart. (Read the full story here.)

We want God to be proud that he chose us, pleased that he can trust us, and glad that he can use us. We can’t halfway  do what we are called to do. In my case, I can’t write a book or start a podcast and be inconsistent in promoting it, running and hiding. We can’t let fear stop us and instead we have to hide behind Jesus.

    On a related note:
This sermon from my church Revolution Church DC provided yet another layer of confirmation to this episode. So if you want to keep the party going, check it out!
