The POWER OF POETRY And The BEAUTY OF RHYME | John Milton's Poetry - HC Vol. 4 Ep16

John Milton is most famous for his epic poem "Paradise Lost" but he is also well known for his prose and other poetry that he wrote throughout his life. Sometimes involved in controvery and other times secluded in a hamlet composing verse and rhyme Milton would become one of the greatest writers in English history. He lived in the age of Shakespeare and Francis Bacon and these poetic and chaotic times would provide Milton with the energy and perspective needed to change the course of history in terms of English writing. I hope you enjoy these poems of Milton that were selected to be in the Harvard Classics.

A Christian Apologist In The Age Of Reason | Religio Medici: Thomas Browne - HC Vol. 3 Ep15

A Christian Apologist In The Age Of Reason | Religio Medici: Thomas Browne - HC Vol. 3 Ep15

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of religion, it was the age of atheism. It was the age of faith and then the age of reason. Thomas Browne lived in a transformative period in history when the world was shifting from the age of faith to the new age of enlightenment and reason. Thomas Browne's Religio Medici is an epic protestant christian apology defending the faith of his religion. Thomas Browne is witty and has a writing style that is unique and playful. For this reason, Charles Elliott seems to have thought of adding Thomas Browne to the Harvard Classics series and allowing us to experience a writer we may not have sought out on our own. I hope you enjoy my take on the Religio Medici.

How To Obtain A True Classical Education | A Tractate On Education: John Milton - HC Vol. 3 Ep14

How To Obtain A True Classical Education | A Tractate On Education: John Milton - HC Vol. 3 Ep14

What constitutes the elements of a true gentlemanly education? In John Milton's Tractate on Education, he breaks this topic down and discusses his idea of what a true classical education should look like. A healthy amount of studies, mixed in with some exercise and a well-balanced diet to keep the students in good mental and physical shape. His educational plan is not for the faint of heart and most people will not have the patience to even attempt to obtain it nowadays but the details are there for anyone willing to pick up the sword and shield of education and battle their ignorance. Hope you enjoy the third volume of the Harvard Classics series.

Freedom Of Speech is a BURDEN and Should Be CENSORED - Areopagitica - Milton - HC Vol. 3 Ep13

Freedom Of Speech is a BURDEN and Should Be CENSORED - Areopagitica - Milton - HC Vol. 3 Ep13

Freedom to express opinion and debate ideas has been the foundational aspect of Western civilization since the inception of our culture.  Without the freedom to print, write, and speak freely we lose the ability to understand what "truth" is.  To seek anything beyond what is "truth", is to seek appeasement. The ability to distinguish between what is good and what is evil is rooted in our ability to choose and reason. John Milton explains all of this and more in his historical masterpiece of a speech "Areopagitica".   I truly hope you enjoy this video on book 3 of volume 3 of the Harvard Classics. The LOST "Christian Civilization" of Bensalem By Francis Bacon - Harvard Classics - HC3 Ep12

They were lost at sea and almost gave up hope until they stumbled upon the land of Bensalem. A Christian utopia comprised of some of the most virtuous and pious inhabitants. They valued knowledge over gold and wisdom over commodities. In the story of The New Atlantis, Francis Bacon lets his pen flow with imaginative details that would not become reality until centuries later. I truly hope you enjoy this episode of "The New Atlantis" by Bacon.

These short essays are filled with history, wit, and great information that provide a rich literature experience. From references to Plutarch's Lives to the Islam religion these essays have stood the test of time. His writing style is unique and the words he uses seem to be chosen very carefully. The MEDITATIONS of MARCUS AURELIUS: A Breakdown of His Journal - Harvard Classics - HC2 Ep9

During the peak of Rome's glory lived a stoic emperor who left a journal that became a blueprint on how to live a virtuous and good life. The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is an important pillar of classical education and classical literature. The "Philosopher King" would become synonymous with Marcus Aurelius as he would become one of the most famous Roman emperors in history. I hope you enjoy my ramblings on this amazing journal "Meditations" as we dive into Marcus Antoninus's thoughts.

Before Ryan Holiday... There Was EPICTETUS: "The Golden Sayings" Harvard Classics - HC2 Ep7

Epictetus is one of my favorite stoic philosophers. From his wit to his straightforwardness, I enjoy his works immensely.  From his humble beginnings as a slave just trying to survive to his influence on emperors and generals, he has earned his place in history. His DEATH Set Off the Age Of Philosophy: Socrates - Phaedo by Plato - Harvard Classics - HC2 Ep6

His DEATH Set Off the Age Of Philosophy: Socrates - Phaedo by Plato - Harvard Classics - HC2 Ep6

The death of Socrates set off the age of philosophy. It also set off the search for the soul. In the story of Phaedo we dive into Socrates' ideas on the existence of the soul before life begins and what happens to it after it ends. In the last minutes of Socrates's life after drinking the poisonous hemlock we watch as Socrates calmly accepts his fate and dies with courage and peace. His death is an important part of philosophy and is a sign of the times. We must not lose sight of what is true and virtuous and we have to instill reason back into society if we hope for it to function in a just way.  I hope you enjoy the story of Phaedo by Plato as we read through the Harvard Classics.

JUSTICE or DEATH - There Is No Option for Cowardice: Crito by Plato - Harvard Classics Rev- HC2 Ep5

The trial and death of Socrates is a remarkable story about one man's decision to defy the mob of society and choose truth over unrighteousness. So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The simple act of telling the truth can make waves that can last for thousands of years.  The conversation he has with Crito is one of steadfast courage in the wake of an unjust government.  Where are the men like him today? God only knows.

So many lessons can be pulled from the story such as sacrifice, justice, betrayal, and corruption. The simple act of telling the truth can make waves that can last for thousands of years.  Socrates was a veteran, a husband, and a father but we know him today as the founder of the Socratic method and one of if not the wisest philosophers to have ever lived.  Where are the men like him today? The Pious ABOLITIONIST You NEVER Heard of - John Woolman: Harvard Classics Review - HC1 Ep2.

The Journal of John Woolman is a documented journey of a remarkable man. Although, like me, you probably have never heard of John Woolman his story I feel can resonate with us all. He is a devout Quaker hell-bent on living a life that is loyal to his religion and traditions and at the same time courageously willing to challenge the status quo. His journal makes up a writing style that is logical and pious. He does not deviate from his ideas once he judges them as good and moral. An abolitionist before it was mainstream and a man who truly walked in the teaching of Christ.
