S3E8 -- Conversation with 5 time RAAM finisher Rick Kent

Not every man can hear that he has Multiple Sclerosis and decide that he has become even more special.  My guest in this episode did exactly that.  Rick Kent is not only a 4-time 515 finisher and 5-time RAAM finisher, he is also an accomplished sports photographer.

Rick shares many tips about racing and what were his favourite events that he has both competed and worked at as a photographer.  From the opening questions about his life in Austin, Texas you will be hooked to listening to his tales.

You can contact Rick through DM on Facebook or at his email address RKent@mac.com and ask him your own questions about RAAM if you are considering the race.

S3E7 -- 515 is for Champions and Everyday Athletes that never give up

My Ohana guest in this episode is the men’s winner of UMC 2022 – Christian Isakson.  Christian has competed in six 515 events including the Ultraman World Championships in which he had a near fatal bike accident in 2013.

The UltraMX 515 Athlete in Profile is a self professed “regular athlete - mom of four, with a day job” – Delia Luján from Mexico.  Delia has already competed at the UltraMX 515 once, but she is drawn back by the lure of the Ohana.  Delia is an author and regular media contributor in the field of nutrition.

S3E6 -- Ultra 520K Canada Race Recap and Memories

The 515 Ultra Podcast completes its on the road in Penticton vacay with the Ultra 520K Canada finale recap.

In this episode, I speak with the winners – Jeremy Hopwood (27:38:06) and Susan Evans (31:37:40) live from the finish line.  Susan has set a record as the first woman in her age group (60-69) to complete an Ultra race.

The rest of this episode is a series of memories told by the staff and athletes that have been coming to Steve Brown’s races since 1993.  As regular listeners know, Steve is retiring the Ultra 520K Canada race and will be putting on a new Ultra race at the 355k distance as an attempt to better more Ironman athletes and introduce them to Ultra distances.

S3E4 -- The Unlikely path to Ultra with Gloria Aguilera

S3E4 -- The Unlikely path to Ultra with Gloria Aguilera

Not every athlete who challenges the 515 distance has completed 20 Ironmans, or have been winners in their age groups, or are Ultra marathon junkies.  Some just work their way up the distances and prepare to take on the 515 distance with a hope of just finishing.  My guest today, Gloria Aguilera, did not do any of that.  Her first triathlon was the Ultra 355 in Cozumel and now she is my guest as the UltraMX 515 athlete in profile.

She is lucky to have an experienced guide in the form of husband Jose Postigo, a 2 time finisher of UltraMX 515 and 2 time finsiher of the UltraMX 515 Non Stop.  He also joins our conversation and shares some of his stories about those races.

Gloria brings a great perspective to the 515 personal challenge.  She recognizes her athletic shortcomings and is not out to win it all.  Both her and Jose are in it for the fun, the Ohana, and to live a healthy lifestyle.

Steve King shares the background of the UltraMX 515 race director and coach of Gloria, Van Sanchez.

S3E3 -- Why be average, When you can be Your Best : Shangrila Rendon

S3E3 -- Why be average, When you can be Your Best : Shangrila Rendon

In this episode I speak with Ohana athlete, Shagrila Rendon of Feisty Fox Coaching.

She regularly takes on larger and larger ultra feats fuelled by guts and driven by pure determination to leave behind the ghosts of her horrible past.

Though seen by the outside world to have it all together (a blossoming career, flourishing in the rigours of academia and participating in ultra events) for many years her inner world was flush with turmoil -- abuse, eating disorders, PTSD, severe depression and alcoholism.

At the age of 34 she was finally able to put those dark days behind her and use her healing journey to provide hope and help for others when she set out to complete the Beyond Myself Project during the depths of the Covid crisis.

S3E2 -- Ultra 520K Canada Athlete in Profile : Ramon Lopez Mendizabal

S3E2 -- Ultra 520K Canada Athlete in Profile : Ramon Lopez Mendizabal

In this episode I speak with Ohana athlete, Ramon Lopez Mendizabal, in what was originally set up as an Ultra 520K Canada Athlete in Profile.   As happens in the 515 world, plans change at the last minute and I learned, during our conversation, that Ramon will not be attending the race this year after all.

Still, Ramon has a wealth of stories to share about epic events that he has participated in and his work life is pretty interesting too.   He has competed in Ultraman Israel, 16 IM’s, multiple ultra-marathons, and over 50 marathons around the world.

So the new title of this episode has become : Ohana Guest -- Ramon Lopez Mendizabal.

S3E1 -- Epic Deca athlete Julian Summers

If doing a 515 race or five 140.6 distance races in five days isn’t enough of a challenge, why not try the Epic Deca (the 10 year anniversary race of Epic 5) which will be ten 140.6 distance races in 10 days.  That’s what my Ohana guest, Julian Summers, has decided to do.  This race takes place from May 10-19th.

In the second part of the podcast today I finish my Steve Brown conversation from the previous episode.  Steve tells some Steve Brown Stories to reflect on the 30 years that he has organized Ultra triathlons in Penticton under the Ultraman and Ultra 520 brands.

Today’s episode opens with a clip from YouTube, where race director Steve Brown welcomes racers to the 2016 Ultra520K Canada.  Steve is the OG race director for UMC and has also directed Ironman Canada. I find out if Steve intends to make another run at city council in Penticton and some other exciting breaking Tri news.

Steve King Stories features an athlete who previously appeared on the podcast in episode 8 of this season, Jeremy Howard.

Finally, I catch up with Van Sanchez in Mexico who will be running the UltraMX515 Non-Stop on April 29 and 30th.  Follow the race at their Instagram page.

This is your last chance to vote in  the 515 Podcast Facebook Ultra Race March Madness bracket pool.   The final match up closes on Saturday April 16 at midnight PST.

S2E12 -- Conversation with 2-time UMC Champion : Nick Mallett, Vagabond

S2E12 -- Conversation with 2-time UMC Champion : Nick Mallett, Vagabond

In this episode I catch up with my Aussie mate Nick Mallett.  Nick has participated in ten 515 distance events and is a two time champion of Ultraman Canada.   You may know this Ohana member for his advice and commentary about Ultra’s as Thailand Ultras on Slowtwitch.  The handle he adopted after being banned from the site and reinstated.

Recently, Nick (age 58) posted about trying to attempt a SUB10 at IM Western Australia.  I had to see if he was serious about it or just starting another discussion.  Never one to shy away from the political side of the Ultra family, we also discuss the future of the sport.

S2E7 -- A Conversation with 2015 UMWC Champion Mike Coughlin

S2E7 -- A Conversation with 2015 UMWC Champion Mike Coughlin

Mike Coughlin shares his journey through endurance sports and the lessons learned along the way to becoming the Ultraman World Championships champion.  These include learning patience, making the correct choices at the right times, racing with negative splits, and learning how to win the big races.

Mike shares experiences from other unique events and tries to put into words what Ohana truly means and feels like.

Since winning UMWC in 2015, Mike now focuses more on coaching other Ultra athletes through  Discomfort Zone Performance Coaching and raising his two young children with his partner Kate in Guelph, Ontario.

Three time World Champion Tracy Preston is the athlete profiled in Steve King Stories. Tracy holds the distinction of winning by the smallest margin of victory ever at an Ultraman event.

    S2E6 -- If it’s November . . . Postcards from Kona

    S2E6 -- If it’s November . . . Postcards from Kona

COVID changes a lot of plans.  This episode was going to be a conversation with Dave and Sheryl Cobb to preview the Ultraman World Championships race.  Still we had a great conversation about previous races and they shared how they came to be the caretakers of Aloha, Ohana, Kokua on the big island.

Keeping with the Kona theme, I also speak with the 19 time participant, Gary Wang.  In fact, although he lives in California, he did our Zoom from Hawaii.

Steve King Stories features one of my previous guests, Petr Vabroušek--holder of the record for the fastest 515.

S2E5 -- Ultramarathon and Ultraman racing on parallel roads

S2E5 -- Ultramarathon and Ultraman racing on parallel roads

I finally broke down and invited my ex wife Lucy Ryan to the podcast.

Lucy has become one of the top female ultra athletes in Canada taking on five 515 events and a number of ultra marathons.   She was the 9th Canadian woman to complete Badwater 135 and has also competed at Brazil 135, a race that follows the most difficult segment of the Caminho da Fé or Path of the Faith, the longest Pilgrimage in Brazil. It travels over the Mantiqueira Mountains, and has 30,000 feet of cumulative ascent and 28,000 feet of cumulative descent, with only 10 flat miles in the race.

We talk about how she came to find triathlon and why she pushed to go farther and farther in ultras. We also discuss the various ways in which her body has forced her to “limit” what she now does.  Like hiking at Kilimanjaro as a member of the Kidney Donor Athletes program.

Steve King Stories features Dr Toni Barstis, professor of chemistry and physics and Ultraman competitor.

    Time Stamps & Topics:

S2E4 -- Conversations to End Stigmas

Two athletes who are more than happy to discuss topics often stigmatized are in this episode.

My first conversation is with multi-515 finisher and ultrarunner, Shane Mascarin.  Shane shares stories of his previous races, with some great tips, and openly discusses his mental health and how he has learned to regulate his medication during the stress of ultra events.

Steve King Stories features Scottish born athlete Milind Soman from Mumbai, India.

The athlete in profile feature is with New Zealander, Toni Hodge.   Toni discusses her ascent to the Ultraman distance through battles with Mother Nature and how she has had to adapt her training after going through menopause.

S2E3 - Leaving the Grind for the love of Tri

S2E3 - Leaving the Grind for the love of Tri

Both of the conversations in this episode are with athletes who have given up their careers to simplify their lives and pursue, whole-heartedly, their love of triathlon.

First up is Ultraman Florida finisher, Caroline Bloom, in the UMC profile slot.  She shares stories about her recent win at 24 hours in the Canyon and how she has struggled with moving to Colorado just prior to the pandemic.

Then, I have a conversation with Arnaud Selukov who is in the Netherlands for the Long Course World Championships in Almere where he is seeking another age group world title.  He has 42 - 140.6 races and four 515’s under his belt.  When not racing he is rescuing dogs and working with athletes through 859 Coaching.

Mike Coughlin, coach with Discomfort Zone and Ohana member from multiple Ultraman races, Is the subject of this episode's Steve King Stories.
