How play encourages bolder outcomes in collaborative service design, with Kris Kelly-Frère
Kris Kelly-Frère is a singular individual. When we first met at a design event, the room was filled with austere design folk in cookie-cutter black t-shirt and black jeans. Kris was the only person wearing a kimono. You just knew that he'd have something interesting to say.
It turned out that Kris has a lot to say about the concept of Play . Especially how fostering the conditions for play helps groups to collaboratively design better and bolder solutions that are relevant for them and their stakeholders.
He's passionate about taking concepts developed for encouraging autonomous and intrinsically motivated play in kids and applying this to service design engagements. This very different approach, has yielded very different outcomes with materially better impact.
There are two things to note in the podcast.
First, although we started out with the intention of following our YAP interview framework, Kris' "natural talent for storytelling" meant that we departed from the framework before we'd really started... and the episode is all the better for it.
At one point a woman dresses as a bee and rides a penny farthing. Sometimes you have to give in and go with it.
Second, this is the first time that we've used AI to edit the episode. The results were interesting, rather than time saving. I'm sure that things will improve.
About Kris
As Creative Practice Lead for J5 Design, Kristofer Kelly-Frere makes magic serious business and wants to help you explore the edges of what seems possible. J5 is a design studio dedicated to creating a kinder, more beautiful future together in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
With more than 15 years of experience in senior design roles, Kristofer has worked across a range of public, private, and government institutions to craft experiences, lead deep engagement, found design labs, and deliver ground-breaking social impact projects. Kristofer led the team responsible for “Braver Training Grounds” - a project with Red Deer Housing Authority that won the 2022 Global Service Design Award. Success like this is the result of his love for playing in the mud of ambiguity in order to move innovative dreams across the threshold into reality.
Links & Peeps that Kris mentioned in our podcast:
The Land. A short film about adventure play in England/North America. Kris said that he's intrigued by the kinds of questions it asks if you start thinking about comparing the dynamics between the play workers and kids vs. designers and clients. And for me lets us think about the magic and messy space between design (solutions) and art (questions) that we might call play.
In the episode Kris mention some incredible folks who have influenced his practice.

Dr. Paula David on Bringing Stories of Holocaust Survivors to New Alum Yiddish Tears
After decades of working with Holocaust survivors who'd been young adults during the war, Dr. Paula David began working with survivors who were children during this gruesome chapter in history. These survivors began having vivid recollections of their extremely traumatic memories as their short term memories waned. Together, Dr. Paula helped these residents create collective poetry to share their struggles with future generations. Their poetry doesn't chronicle the horrific details, but survivors were subject to many scientific experiments, forced sterilization and sexual abuse. Dr. Paula, other doctors, care workers, and nurses developed a list of triggers in addition to other information to help all loved ones and caretakers.
Some residents used the sharing of their collective poetry to help educate school children. These poems inspired, Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango, a new album by Payadora Tango Ensemble. Together producer Daniel Rosenberg and Dr. Paula worked with songwriters, translators, vocalists, and musicians to create haunting songs. Some lyrics feature words from this Terrace Poetry Collective, some from Holocaust survivor Molly Applebaum and some form Anna Hana, Lenka Lichtenberg.

A Historical Love Story from the late 30's and early 40's
https://amzn.to/3AcDLOy Carla, A Love Story by Isabel Elias
EventsbyIsabel@gmail.com
This is episode number ONE! I am so excited!!! I have two other shows, Masterfesto, Mastering your Mind, and Masterfesto Meditations. This Podcast Show is all about Stories, fiction and non-fiction from different media sources including blogs, manuscripts, magazines, newspaper articles, books and books and books.
This Podcast is great for bloggers, publishers, authors, book reviewers, editors and especially book lovers. I am passionate about books – I think that’s clear. I have several published books on self-help, all available on amazon, and a children's book. But my very favorite is my Romance Novel, Carla. I am passionate about this book. I think you will too!
This episode is on my novel, Carla, A True Story except when it’s not true. My purpose in sharing this novel with you is of course to entertain you but most important, it’s to inspire you to have more passion in your life…….. A life without passion is a boring life, I believe. Passion brings me joy; passion fills my heart with love, Passion gives me life. Everything I do, I do with passion. I will always spread joy everywhere I go, and I will always continue to live a life filled with passion. Reading Carla will boost those passion chemical receptors in the brain. And WOW what it will do to your mind and body!
Carla is a romance novel, but it’s not an ordinary romance novel. It’s steaming with passion. And it’s based on a historical time period, the late 30’s early 40’s. The genre is Realistic Historical Romance Fiction. This genre consists of stories that could have actually occurred to people in a believable setting. These stories resemble real life, and the fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people. These stories fiction mirror life. The scenes are dramatized to create interest and entertain the reader.
The characters in my novel, Carla, are fictional based on my imagination and the many conversations with my mother, Alice Elias Arellano, and my aunt Estela Elias Garcia…… They were great storytellers. This book is dedicated to these two amazing women who taught me how to live and love.
