How to Become a Better Manager

How to Become a Better Manager
Julie Zhuo was Facebook’s first intern, and she became a manager there in her mid-twenties. Those early years as a manager at the company—now named Meta—were tough. She says she often felt like she was in over her head and she made a lot of mistakes.

But Zhuo did eventually learn how to manage team dynamics. When she left Facebook in 2020, she was leading a team of hundreds, as vice president of product design.

Now the co-founder of Sundial, she takes questions from listeners who are struggling to manage their own team dynamics. She offers advice for when your employee is bossing around others on the team, and how to help an underperforming team member.

Zhuo is the author of the book The Making of a Manager: What to Do When Everyone Looks to You.

Key episode topics include: leadership, developing employees, leading teams, managing people.

70+ ideas for questions to ask at the end

70+ ideas for questions to ask at the end

In most cases the last part of your interview will be a chance for YOU to ask the questions. It’s a chance to reveal your curiosity about the company and the role.

In this week’s episode Sarah and Emma are picking out some of their favourite questions that go beyond the basics of our last episode. We'll discuss the art of being genuinely interested, turning the tables by 'interviewing' the interviewer, and why you shouldn’t be looking to ‘stand out’ with your questions.

Plus, don't miss out on our free download – a spreadsheet packed with question ideas to have at your fingertips!

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Bec “Thank you ladies so much!!!! I just walked out of my interview and feel amazing. I had a session with Sarah on Wednesday and we were certain they weren't going to ask me a "tell me about yourself" question being a government job, but I'd prepared it anyway AND THEY ASKED!!! I had to come up with one answer that didn't fit the best bits I'd prepared, but I was able to stick to the structure of story, what I did, what was the result and weave in a different story. Just want to say too that I thought this was my "dream job" but after listening to your "take your dream job off the pedestal" episode, my preparation changed completely and I've left the interview room feeling like I did the best I could do, if I dont get this I'll use it all for the next opportunity. Thats why I'm sending this now and not after I've heard if I got the job, because the result doesn't even feel like it matters now.”

Ernie Garcia - Disrupting the Auto Buying Experience - [Founder’s Field Guide, EP. 45]
My guest today is Ernie Garcia, co-founder and CEO of online used car platform, Carvana. Ernie launched Carvana in 2012, and less than a decade later, the business commands a $60 billion valuation while selling a used car every other minute.   Our conversation covered a lot of ground. We discussed effective decision-making, what it means to be a long-term thinker, and what Ernie sees as the defining features of attractive markets. We then went deep on Carvana itself, covering the original insight, logistics operations, and counter-intuitive decisions Carvana took as they set about building the brand. I think you’ll find Ernie’s insights and energy infectious. I hope you enjoy this great conversation with Carvana CEO, Ernie Garcia.   For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here. -----   This episode is brought to you by SnackMagic. 498-Sera Gamble & Heath Evans-Your Mom's House with Christina P and Tom Segura

498-Sera Gamble & Heath Evans-Your Mom's House with Christina P and Tom Segura
HELLO, MOMMIES! We're still reeling from all of the Robert Paul Champagne memes and content you've made for us. It's been overwhelming in all the best ways. Tom and Christina review some of the reaction to RPC coming on the show the last two weeks. Have you ever had a fart bully in your life? Is Emma Stone hot enough to be cast as Ryan Gosling's love interest? The Mommies debate. Next, Josh Potter is on the couch to wet our whistle for our first guest, Sera Gamble. Josh tells some wild stories of cyber stalking and is presented with a proposition by the Main Mommies. After hearing about some cyber stalking tales, Sera Gamble (writer and creator of "YOU") is in studio to give her insight into cyber stalking and how "Joe" in YOU has implemented social media to become a stalker. Sera also gives us some teases about the upcoming season of YOU and the story of getting the show out to the masses. Next, he played for the Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and The New England Patriots, but more importantly, he played against Tom in High School. It's fullback and broadcaster Heath Evans! Heath and Tom reminisce about their time in high school and the small differences in their athletic career, plus Heath has some great stories from his NFL days about Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and Randy Moss.
