    en-usNovember 08, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Transforming Homes into Airbnbs and Extending HospitalityCreating a welcoming space for guests in your home can bring in extra income and enrich your life. Personal touches and thoughtful design can make a big difference.

Transforming your home into an Airbnb not only brings in additional income but also allows you to share a piece of your world with travelers. Jen and the guest on the podcast, Nadia Tolokonnikova, shared their experiences of extending hospitality to guests in their homes. Jen spoke about designing her home with a spare bedroom for guests and adding personal touches to make their stay comfortable. Nadia, on the other hand, shared her experiences of growing up in Russia and how it inspired her activism. She criticized authority and used performance art as a form of protest against Vladimir Putin's regime, leading to her imprisonment. Both women emphasized the importance of making guests feel welcome and cherished, whether in a physical space or through activism. The episode also featured the Commercial Break podcast, which explores absurd topics and reflections on their 20-year friendship. Overall, the episode highlighted the value of opening up one's home and life to others, whether through hospitality or activism.

    • Growing Up Differences Between Russia and the USRussians and Americans have contrasting views on child-rearing due to cultural norms and societal expectations. Younger generations, regardless of nationality, are becoming more independent and economically powerful at younger ages.

The speaker's experience growing up in Russia versus in the United States led to different perspectives on growing up and the role of children in society. Russians, according to the speaker, are expected to grow up faster with earlier legal drinking ages and more independence at younger ages. In contrast, Americans are encouraged to continue their education until a later age. However, the speaker notes that younger generations, regardless of nationality, are increasingly influential and economically independent at younger ages, as evidenced by the success of children making money from online businesses like slime sales. The speaker expresses a desire to be a cool parent and gain the approval of his young daughter, even if he is an internationally recognized artist. The speaker's reflections on these differences and experiences highlight the evolving roles and expectations of children and parents in both cultures.

    • Long-standing tradition of corrupt Russian policeThe Russian police's history of demanding special registrations illegally creates fear and distrust among the people, perpetuating a cultural divide between the government and the populace.

The speaker's fear of authorities, specifically Russian police, stems from a long-standing tradition of corrupt and illegal practices by law enforcement officers in Russia. This tradition involves stopping people on the street and demanding special registration, a request that goes against the law. The speaker's father, and many others, have learned to avoid interacting with the police to avoid trouble and potential falsification of charges. This experience shaped the speaker's distrust of authority and created a cultural divide between the people's love for their country and their hatred for the government. The corruption in the Russian police force is so pervasive that many officers join the force in hopes of earning bribes due to low salaries. The speaker identifies as being anti-Putin and pro-Russian, highlighting the distinction between the Russian government and the Russian people.

    • Being unconventional in politics can lead to accusations and labelsCriticizing political figures or acknowledging internal issues can lead to being labeled as unconventional or even accused of having ulterior motives. Unprofessional voices, like Pussy Riot, can challenge norms and lead to change.

Expressing nuanced opinions, especially in political matters, can lead to being labeled as unconventional or even accused of having ulterior motives. This was the experience of the speaker, who was accused of being a Russian spy due to her criticisms of Putin and the Russian prison system, as well as her acknowledgement of internal issues contributing to Trump's election. The speaker also noted the comparison between Trump and Pussy Riot, suggesting that both were seen as wild cards or outsiders in their respective spheres. Another key takeaway is the importance of having unprofessional voices in politics, as the speaker argued that experts have led to policies she dislikes. Pussy Riot itself began as a conceptual art gesture when the group realized there was no punk feminist music in Russia, demonstrating the power of unconventional voices in challenging norms.

    • Nadia Tolokonnikova's punk roots in abandoned buildingsNadia Tolokonnikova lived in abandoned buildings to rehearse her punk music, which was a means to her activism against Putin. She survived by shoplifting and chose art over a mundane job. Notable acts include projecting skull and crossbones on the White House on her birthday.

Nadia Tolokonnikova's punk rock roots began in abandoned buildings, where the group would rehearse despite the elements and potential harm. This was not for fun, but rather a means to be effective in their activism against figures like Putin. Tolokonnikova recounted her past of living by shoplifting to survive, using the small amount of money as an insurance policy against getting caught. Her life was filled with adventure and creativity, and she chose art over a mundane job. One of her most notable acts was projecting skull and crossbones onto the White House on her birthday, which commemorated the Russian Revolution. Despite the risks and challenges, Tolokonnikova's determination and resilience have led her to become a renowned Russian cultural export, known for her music and activism.

    • Activists used art and bold actions to challenge Putin's governmentTwo young women led an art-based activist group, projecting images onto parliament and breaking through a fence, inspiring others and gaining global attention despite risks and consequences.

A group of activists, including two women who were only 22 years old at the time, used art and bold actions to challenge the power of the Russian government during Putin's presidency. They projected an image of bones onto the parliament building, broke through a 6-meter fence, and were able to escape before authorities could respond. Their actions inspired other artists and activists to take similar risks, and even though they faced consequences, they felt accomplished in making their point and causing trouble for the government. Despite Putin's attempts to downplay their actions, world leaders were aware of their activism, and it put a spotlight on the Russian government's treatment of dissidents. However, the actions were still risky, as shown by the violent response from authorities during the Sochi Olympics.

    • Understanding Fear: Nadia Tolokonikova's PerspectiveNadia Tolokonikova, a Russian activist and musician, acknowledges having fears but doesn't let them control her activism work. She finds comfort and courage in her community of brave activists.

Fear is a complex emotion that people handle differently. Nadia Tolokonikova, a Russian activist and musician, shared her unique perspective on fear. She has faced numerous threats to her safety, including a bandmate being poisoned, yet she doesn't let fear control her. According to her, she doesn't know what fear is and can't even write about her actions on social media due to fear. On the other hand, she acknowledges having fears but channels them to continue her activism work in Russia. She finds comfort and courage in her community, who are also brave activists, despite the risks they face daily. This conversation highlights the importance of understanding that fear is a normal emotion, but it doesn't have to control our lives. Instead, we can learn to channel it and find support in our communities.

    • Pussy Riot: Challenging Russian Orthodox Church and Government with Punk PerformancesRussian punk band Pussy Riot faced harsh punishment for challenging the Russian Orthodox Church and government with provocative performances, including imprisonment and physical and psychological abuse, but continued to create art as a means of expressing their beliefs and inspiring change.

The members of Pussy Riot, a Russian punk band, used provocative performances to challenge the Russian Orthodox Church and government, leading to their arrest and imprisonment. Initially, they were not taken seriously by the authorities and were able to evade capture for some time. However, when they gained media attention, they were seen as a threat and faced harsh punishment, including physical and psychological abuse. Despite the risks, they continued to create art as a means of expressing their beliefs and inspiring change. The experience was traumatizing, but they chose to stay and continue their activism in Russia.

    • Finding meaning and purpose in life helps individuals overcome adversityDespite facing political persecution and temptation to leave, the speaker found solace and motivation through art and community. Supporting and nurturing talent in own country is important. Personal boundaries and privacy should be respected. Having meaningful goals and a sense of purpose can help individuals endure difficult times.

Finding meaning and purpose in life can help individuals overcome adversity and hardships, even in the most challenging circumstances. This was a theme that emerged from the discussion, with the speaker reflecting on how they found solace and motivation through their art and community, despite facing political persecution and the temptation to leave Russia. They also emphasized the importance of supporting and nurturing talent in their own country, rather than abandoning it. Another key point was the importance of respecting personal boundaries and privacy, even if it means not revealing favorite rap artists. The speaker also shared insights from their experiences in prison, highlighting how having meaningful goals and a sense of purpose can help individuals endure difficult times and stay connected to their humanity.

    • Finding joy in adversityDiscovering happiness in small pleasures and standing up for justice can provide strength during hardships.

Finding joy and subverting expectations in the face of adversity can be a powerful tool for survival. This was a lesson the speaker learned during his time in prison, where he found joy in simple pleasures like seeing green leaves or catching a glimpse of sunlight. He also realized that he didn't have to be helpless in prison and that having an army of supporters outside made a big difference. After his release, he visited prisons around the world, including Rikers Island in New York, to learn about prison reform. There, he met Cecily MacMillan, an Occupy Wall Street protester who was facing a similar sentence to what he and his friends had received. This experience made him question why the prison system disproportionately affected certain communities, leading him on a journey of investigation and advocacy. Overall, the speaker's experiences showed that even in the most challenging circumstances, finding joy and standing up for what is right can make a difference.

    • Scandinavian approach to prisons focuses on rehabilitationTreating prisoners with respect and providing normal living conditions leads to lower recidivism rates

The Scandinavian approach to prisons, which focuses on rehabilitation and providing a normal living environment, leads to lower recidivism rates compared to countries with a more punitive approach. This is because prisoners who are treated with warmth and respect during their time in prison are more likely to believe they can work with society once released, reducing the likelihood of reoffending. The contrasting examples given were from Norway, where prisoners live in cottage-like accommodations, and Germany, where a former Stasi prison has been transformed into a resocialization center offering prisoners jobs and normal living conditions. This approach counters the intuitive belief that harsher prison conditions would deter crime, and instead, highlights the importance of treating prisoners as individuals in need of rehabilitation.

    • Access to the Internet and feelings of isolationHigh performers, including activists, can experience self-doubt and imposter syndrome despite accomplishments. Seek help from professionals and take action, learn new things, and help others to cope.

Access to the Internet is considered a basic human right, even in unexpected places like prisons, and the lack of it can cause significant frustration and feelings of isolation. Another key takeaway is that high performers, including activists, often experience self-doubt and imposter syndrome, despite their accomplishments. It's important to acknowledge these feelings and seek help from professionals, such as therapists, to better cope with them. Taking action, learning new things, and helping others can also help alleviate these negative emotions. The speaker personally has dealt with self-doubt and has found that learning new languages and helping others can be effective ways to overcome it.

    • Art as therapy and expressionExplore personal problems through art before seeking external solutions, art can help cope with challenges and bring change, lack of political art and activism is disappointing, art can serve as powerful therapy and expression for all

Art can serve as a powerful form of therapy and expression, especially for those who may struggle with communication or living in restrictive societies. The speaker, who identifies as shy, believes that art has been the most effective form of psychotherapy for them throughout their life. They also encourage individuals to explore their problems through artistic means before seeking external solutions. Furthermore, the speaker expresses disappointment in the lack of political art and activism following the 2016 U.S. election and encourages more individuals to express their thoughts and feelings through their creations. While acknowledging that not all societies are free, they believe that art can help people cope with challenges and bring about change, regardless of borders.

    • Starting Points for Political Activism Through ArtFind a comfortable starting point for political activism through art, such as writing music or making music videos. Be unique and thoughtful in your approach.

Creating political art may not be seen as cool or conventional, but it's important to find a comfortable starting point. Nadia Tolokonikova, a member of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, encourages those interested in political activism through art to begin with simpler steps, such as writing music and making music videos. It's essential to break the trend and not be discouraged by the perceived craziness of activism. Tolokonikova also emphasized the importance of doing one's homework and being unique in interviews. She appreciated the relaxed and off-the-beaten-path interviews, as opposed to the typical, repetitive questions from other interviewers. Overall, the key takeaway is to find a comfortable starting point for political activism through art and to be unique and thoughtful in one's approach.

993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny!

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

    • Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.
    • Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.
    • New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.
    • While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.
    • The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.
    • And much more...

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.
    • The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.
    • The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.
    • The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.
    • Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

    • Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.
    • Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.
    • Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.
    • Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.
    • Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.
    • And much more...

    • How Robert, working undercover for US Customs and the DEA, posed as a money launderer to infiltrate Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel and other criminal organizations.
    • Money laundering enables cartels to produce their most lethal product: corruption. Corrupt officials and governments facilitate drug trafficking operations.
    • Money laundering methods are highly sophisticated, involving legitimate businesses, secret codes, and multi-national operations to evade detection.
    • Banks and the global financial system need to change to combat money laundering effectively, with severe penalties for those involved in facilitating the flow of illicit funds.
    • Despite the risks and close calls, Robert continued his undercover work to gather intelligence and evidence against drug cartels until it became clear that the price his family was paying was not worth continuing.

    986: Porn | Skeptical Sunday

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.
    • Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.
    • Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.
    • While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.
    • While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

What challenges can the ocean help us meet, and what must we do to safeguard its treasures? The Underworld author Susan Casey dives deep for answers here!

What We Discuss with Susan Casey:

    • The ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and serves as the largest carbon sink on the planet, making its preservation essential for mitigating climate change.
    • The ocean is home to a fascinating array of creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions, such as iron-breathing microbes, glass sponges, and jellyfish that can reverse their life cycle.
    • Pollution, including plastics, chemical weapons, and nuclear waste, has severely impacted the ocean ecosystem, with some deep-sea creatures found to have plastic particles embedded in their organs.
    • There are an estimated three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, preserving valuable historical artifacts and information — such as the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek analog computer.
    • Exploring the ocean can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, Earth's history, and climate, providing valuable insights for addressing humanity's challenges — provided we safeguard this treasury of knowledge for current and future generations.
    • And much more...

David Shimer (@davidashimer) is a historian, foreign policy analyst, and author of Rigged: America, Russia, and One Hundred Years of Covert Electoral Interference.

What We Discuss with David Shimer:

    • Why the more polarized a democracy, the more vulnerable it is to foreign subversion.
    • While we know that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and is working to interfere in the 2020 election, it's actually been attempting to subvert the integrity of our elections for the past century.
    • Why every American, of every political persuasion, should be concerned about the interference of Russia -- or any other foreign power -- in our elections.
    • What Russia really seeks to gain from undermining the democratic process not only in the United States, but around the world.

    • Why removing the stigma of mental health treatment is crucial to breaking the cycles of recidivism in which young people often get trapped.

    • How one stays relevant in the entertainment industry, which is always asking: "What have you done for me lately?"
    • The role relationships play at the top of the music game -- one of the most competitive industries on the planet.

    • How Stephen King (probably not the one you're thinking of) brought this whole operation down, inadvertently leading to a domino effect of positive change beginning with Coss Marte.
    • The power of mindset and fitness to stay sane and healthy behind bars -- where the odds are stacked overwhelmingly against personal improvement on any level.
    • What Coss and ConBody Fitness are doing to help rehabilitate the incarcerated and break the cycle of recidivism so many fall into.
    • How lessons learned from the illicit drug trade transferred to Coss' legitimate business and helped him build a bridge of understanding between the world's successful and its formerly incarcerated.
