343: THE BOOK IS OUT TODAY! (And Why Accomplishments Can Feel Anticlimactic and That’s OK)

    enMay 23, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Bringing a book to life: from writing to sellingAuthor Kara Lowenthal finds joy in intentional creation and turning down anxiety to live a life on her terms, with her book 'Unfuck Your Brain' now available.

The process of bringing a book to life, from writing to marketing and selling it, is a significant accomplishment that requires a great deal of effort and intentionality. The author, Kara Lowenthal, shares that while others might find the release of her book an emotional experience with feelings of pride and excitement, she was not surprised. Instead, she finds joy in the intentional creation of her outcomes and the realization that they have come to fruition. The heart of her work lies in turning down anxiety and turning up confidence to live a life on one's own terms. The book, "Unfuck Your Brain," is now available in the physical world, and its impact can be seen in the lives of those who read and apply its teachings.

    • Experience of accomplishment before outcomeThe thrill of making progress towards goals, even before the outcome, fuels our motivation and drives us forward.

The most exhilarating experience comes from the realization that you've made significant progress towards your goals, even before the outcome materializes. This "crest before the downhill slope" moment, filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride, is what truly drives us forward. This was evident in the speaker's experience while writing her book, which represented a new challenge she had never undertaken before. The actual publication or bestseller status was secondary, as the true joy came from the act of creation and the belief in her ability to accomplish it. This mindset shift can be applied to various aspects of life, from personal achievements to business objectives, and can serve as a powerful motivator in our pursuit of growth and fulfillment.

    • The fulfillment from goal achievement comes from personal growthUnderstanding societal influences on thoughts and emotions, and learning to manage anger effectively, leads to personal growth and fulfillment from goal achievement.

The most fulfilling part of achieving a goal often comes from the mindset and personal growth we experience during the process, rather than the actual outcome itself. The feeling of anticlimax when reaching a milestone is normal and expected if we are intentionally creating outcomes with our thoughts. Moreover, society's perception of emotions, particularly women's anger, can impact how we view and express our feelings. Anger can be a powerful force for change, but it's essential to manage it effectively to avoid negative consequences. The author's book, "Take Back Your Brain," emphasizes the importance of understanding the societal influences that shape our thoughts and emotions and learning how to reclaim control over our minds.

    • Transforming emotional responses to injusticeLearning to cope with emotions and respond productively to injustice involves changing our thinking and finding ways to maintain resilience.

While it's important to be aware of injustices and the emotional impact they have, it's equally important to learn how to cope with those feelings and respond in a productive way. Ayesha, a person of color, found this transformation through feminist coaching, which helped her stand up for herself and not apologize for who she is. However, feminism alone may not provide the tools to process the emotional experience of awareness of unfairness. Learning how to cope with injustice and maintain resilience involves changing our thinking, but also making peace with our feelings. It's crucial for women to find ways to handle the emotions that come with feminist awareness and integrate it into their real lives. The concepts learned in this book about changing your thinking to produce different feelings and actions can be applied to this context as well. In summary, closing the personal brain gap can help us respond effectively to the unfair gaps that exist in the outside world.
