Blocking Out Fixed Time and Personal Time - 2017 Planning... DO THE WORK - Day 128

    enDecember 03, 2016

    Podcast Summary

    • Effective planning balances business and personal lifeSet aside time for family and household responsibilities, allocate remaining hours for business and personal pursuits, and remain flexible for ongoing adjustments.

Effective planning is crucial for maintaining a balance between business and personal life, especially during transitional periods. The speaker emphasizes the importance of setting aside time for family and household responsibilities as non-negotiable, and then allocating the remaining hours for business and personal pursuits. This approach allows for intentional decision-making and avoids overcommitting to non-priority tasks. The speaker also acknowledges the need for flexibility and ongoing adjustments to this plan throughout the year. In essence, successful time management requires a clear understanding of fixed commitments and the intentional allocation of personal time for both business and personal growth.

    • Effective time management through scheduling work, personal activities, and self-careSchedule work, personal activities, and self-care on a weekly basis to maximize productivity, maintain work-life balance, and avoid burnout.

Effective time management involves setting aside dedicated time for work, personal activities, and self-care. By scheduling these activities on a weekly basis, one can stay accountable, focus on tasks, and maximize productivity. High achievers often employ this method to ensure they prioritize their time and make the most of it. This approach not only helps in achieving work goals but also maintains a healthy work-life balance. It is essential to understand that focusing on tasks with undivided attention during allocated time can lead to significant progress. By treating personal activities as important as work commitments, one can maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid burnout. Overall, the key is to create a balanced schedule that allows for both professional growth and personal well-being.

    • Schedule personal time and treat it as non-negotiableScheduling personal activities improves overall well-being, prevents burnout, and guilt-free enjoyment of time off

Creating a schedule and allocating time for personal activities and balance is essential for maintaining focus, avoiding burnout, and preventing feelings of guilt. By treating personal time as non-negotiable and scheduling it in, individuals can ensure they have time for self-care, mental stimulation, and fun activities outside of work. This not only helps improve overall well-being but also prevents the blurring of lines between work and personal life, which can lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction. Additionally, scheduling personal activities absolves individuals of guilt, allowing them to fully engage in the present moment and enjoy their time off without worrying about what they could be doing instead.

    • Balancing work and family requires intentional planningCreate a schedule with specific work and family times, adjust as needed, and believe in the system for increased productivity

Creating a balanced schedule between work and family time requires intentional planning and acceptance. By scheduling specific times for work and family, individuals can minimize feelings of guilt and stress. However, it can be challenging to leave family during scheduled work times and focus on work during unscheduled family times. To create a successful schedule, it's essential to start with a tentative plan, knowing that adjustments will be necessary. The key is to believe in the system and make it work for you, rather than obsessing over perfection. December was chosen as the month to think about this methodology, create tentative schedules, and consider the business side of things to determine optimum times for work and required times for interviews. The goal is to start with a system that is 80% of the way there, adjustable, and believable. This approach sets individuals up for success by reducing messiness and increasing productivity.

    • Benefits of having a rigid work scheduleHaving a structured routine helps manage time effectively, fosters family understanding, and boosts productivity in a new work environment.

Having a rigid schedule can be beneficial for managing a busy lifestyle and ensuring balance, particularly when adjusting to a new situation like working from home full-time. This schedule not only helps the individual manage their time effectively but also serves as an important communication tool for family members, fostering understanding and cooperation. The next step is to fill in the specifics of the schedule by brainstorming exact tasks and times, which may involve saying no to certain distractions or commitments to maintain focus and productivity.

    • Setting priorities and boundaries for personal growthRecognize the importance of saying no to commitments for self-care and focus on what truly matters, prioritize and respect your time and energy for personal and professional growth.

Prioritization and setting boundaries are essential for personal growth and productivity. The speaker acknowledges the difficulty in saying no to commitments, even those currently ongoing, but recognizes the importance of doing so in order to focus on what truly matters. This theme of balance between commitment and self-care is a common challenge for many individuals, and the speaker encourages listeners to be mindful, grateful, and dedicated to their work and relationships. By setting clear priorities and respecting our own time and energy, we can make the most of each day and continue to grow both personally and professionally. Remember, it's okay to say no sometimes and to take care of yourself, as this will ultimately lead to greater success and fulfillment in the long run.

Staying Sane at Work | Laurie Santos

Staying Sane at Work | Laurie Santos

It turns out you can call up Laurie Santos and ask about any conundrum and she will respond with a veritable treasure trove of scientifically-grounded relatable wisdom. In this episode, we ask the question: how do you hit the reset button at work? This question can apply to a variety of contexts - maybe you’re leaving a job, looking for a job, starting a new job, or trying to do your current job more mindfully.

Dr. Laurie Santos is a professor of psychology at Yale University and the host of the popular podcast The Happiness Lab. In this episode, she provides a slew of science-backed strategies for hitting the reset button at work, including: increasing our time affluence; challenging our misconceptions about how much we actually dislike work; leveraging the power of ritual in order to draw firmer boundaries around our work; employing a values-based strategy called “job crafting;” and what to do when someone else at work–someone who is not us–succeeds.

This interview was recorded live on Facebook, and Dr. Santos will be dropping a version of the same conversation over on The Happiness Lab podcast. Be sure to check it out!

This episode is part of the Work Life series we are running here on the show. In conjunction with this series on the podcast, we’re launching a Work Life challenge over on the Ten Percent Happier app. We’ll be dealing with issues such as feedback, imposter syndrome, jerks at work, burnout, productivity shame, and more. Stop Beating Yourself Up So Much

Stop Beating Yourself Up So Much

Today's episode is another GaryVee TV Classic, an interview from "Tea with GaryVee". Too often people fall into the trap of only thinking about the things they aren't doing or could be doing better, and not the things they are doing now that are incredibly beneficial. Just because you aren't chasing your dream at full force, it doesn't mean you are wasting your time. There are plenty of other ways to be productive with your time than chasing your dream. Working and saving money, spending time with loved ones and setting yourself up for success in the future are all great ways to spend time that may not allow you to pursue your passion in full force right now, but they will enable you to do it in the future.

Enjoy! Let me know what you thought.
