Bonus: The Real Reason You're Anxious (Join My Free Training!)

    enFebruary 05, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Pressure to constantly improve can lead to self-criticism and anxietySocietal pressure to improve can negatively impact self-worth and value, leading to anxiety and self-criticism. Remember, our worth and value come from within.

The societal pressure to constantly evaluate and improve ourselves based on external factors, fueled by patriarchal messaging, can lead to overwhelming feelings of self-criticism and anxiety. This pressure, which can manifest in various aspects of our lives, including our bodies, careers, and relationships, can make us feel like our worth and value are dependent on our performance. This can be particularly acute during times of transition, such as after the holiday season. It's important to remember that our worth and value are not determined by external factors or societal expectations, but rather by our inherent existence and being. By recognizing this and practicing self-compassion, we can reduce the anxiety and self-criticism that can hold us back from living our best lives.

    • Socially Programmed Anxiety in Women: Beyond Personal ExperiencesSociety shapes women's anxiety through media, family, and peers. The Feminist Anxiety Fix offers tools to identify and change thought patterns, improving job performance, motherhood, relationships, and overall well-being.

Socially programmed anxiety in women is a significant issue caused by societal expectations and messages. This type of anxiety goes beyond personal experiences and evolutionary biology. It's taught to us through various aspects of society, including media, family, and peers. Socially programmed anxiety affects multiple areas of women's lives, such as job performance, motherhood, body image, romantic relationships, and more. The good news is that it's possible to recover and cure socially programmed anxiety. The Feminist Anxiety Fix, a free training by the speaker, teaches women how to identify and change their thought patterns around socially programmed anxiety. The training covers various areas where women face social programming and provides tools to overcome anxiety in these domains. The training is offered again on Saturday, February 10th, at 2 PM EST, and attendees have the opportunity to receive live coaching and ask questions. A replay will be provided for those who cannot attend live.

In celebration of Independence Day, I'm discussing one of the ultimate forms of independence - breaking free from caring about what others think. As social creatures, humans have evolved to rely on relationships for survival, making us sensitive to others' opinions. However, this conditioning is often even deeper for women and can impact every aspect of their lives, including their careers, relationships, self-worth, parenting, and so much more. If you want to stop obsessing over what others think and start living unapologetically, where do you begin?

Join me as I dive into why women struggle with this issue and provide actionable steps to rewire your brain and liberate yourself from this mental burden.

Keys to overcoming shame with Gina Rolkowski

Keys to overcoming shame with Gina Rolkowski

What are the keys to overcoming shame? Shame and abuse can hold you back and result in living with worry, fear, and anxiety. One key to overcoming shame is faith in God and self-acceptance through His grace.

Overcoming shame can seem impossible. One has to recognize shame is at the root of the experiences, feelings, and thoughts before action can be taken.

How do you recognize and overcome shame?

Anxiety is, in part, a physical manifestation of unresolved emotions and one of those emotions is shame. Most people don't recognize shame unless they truly sit with it. People may harbor negative thoughts about themselves and it takes recognizing those thoughts to change them and overcome them.

Using faith and acceptance from God to overcome shame, trauma, anxiety, and worry

Gina emphasized that if she is a child of God, she can't be the awful person that she thought she was. She learned that her body and mind were responding to sexual and emotional abuse and that she wasn't crazy after realizing she was unconditionally loved. Gina used affirmations of Bible passages to remind herself of what God says about who she is.

    • Fearfully and wonderfully made.
    • More beautiful than rubies.

These Bible verses are good affirmations for women to use as entrepreneurs. Instead of worrying, and sitting in a place of fear and anxiety, how can we accept God's love to overcome these thoughts? Gina uses visualization or imagination to remind herself that God is with her and loving her. The question becomes are you receiving God's love? Sit and open your palms and just receive.

    It's a choice

We all have a choice to receive God's love and acceptance and peace instead of sitting in a place of worry. People may think they are not worthy of God's love and peace. The story of the prodigal son is a great reminder of God's grace and acceptance. God is always happy when we come to Him.

Unwinding Anxiety With Dr. Jud Brewer

Unwinding Anxiety With Dr. Jud Brewer
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a perilous global moment that has indelibly changed all our lives. As we approach the one-year anniversary of societal shut-down, I find it opportune to reflect on how we are reacting, responding and adapting to it—for better or worse. In other words: How is your anxiety level? What habits, good or bad, have you formed in these past 12 months to cope with the insanity and uncertainty of having life upended and placed on indefinite hold? And most importantly—how are these habits serving or not serving you? I posit these questions as context for today’s conversation with my friend Dr. Jud Brewer—a psychiatrist and neuroscientist specializing in habit change who has extensively studied anxiety, and what science tells us about how we can break the cycle of fear and worry that affect all of us to some degree or another. Dr. Jud is the Director of Research and Innovation at the Mindfulness Center, a research affiliate at MIT, and an associate professor in Behavioral and Social Sciences and Psychiatry at the Schools of Public Health & Medicine at Brown University. You might have stumbled upon his TED talk, A simple way to break a bad habit (which has racked in 16+ millions of views) or caught him on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper. He’s also been featured in TIME magazine, NPR, Forbes and many other places. Our previous conversation (RRP 471) focused on addiction and how mindfulness can help us break bad habits. Today we extend that exploration to Dr. Jud’s latest book Unwinding Anxiety—an evidence-backed primer on understanding what causes everything from mild unease to full-blown panic, the relationship between anxiety and addiction, and the many ways we can actually train our minds to feel, perform and live better. This exchange provides actionable steps to help you uproot stress. Break habit loops. And end the cycle of fear-based decision-making. Most importantly perhaps, you will learn how to identify your triggers in order to respond mindfully rather than react impulsively. Dr. Jud is among the very best and brightest at the intersection of neuroscience and habit change — and given that hundreds of millions of people suffer from anxiety, my hope and instinct is that you will find this conversation quite useful. The Real Reason Why You’re Stuck Obsessing Over The Way You Look

Is your reflection in the mirror stirring up negative thoughts about the way you look? Does it feel impossible to stop noticing your so-called “flaws”? Why is this? Well, I recorded this episode to teach you why AND what to do about it. You may not want to hear the truth but I wouldn’t be a good friend if I didn’t bring it to your attention.
