    Who Gives a F *** Friday... DO THE WORK - Day 78

    enOctober 14, 2016

    Podcast Summary

    • Changing Attitude Towards WorkReflect on your attitude towards work, find meaning and purpose in your job, and approach each day with enthusiasm for personal growth and contribution.

Our attitude towards work and life can significantly impact our overall fulfillment and happiness. In the past, Fridays were a symbol of apathy and disengagement for the speaker, representing a lack of meaning or purpose in his work. He lived for the weekends and saw his job as an obstacle to be endured. However, after making changes in his life, he now approaches Fridays with enthusiasm and a desire to be productive. He recognizes the importance of contributing to something greater than himself and finding meaning in his work. The speaker encourages us to reflect on our own attitudes towards work and consider how we can make each day meaningful and worthwhile, rather than just living for the weekends.

    • Discovering work that brings joy and fulfillmentFinding meaningful work can lead to productivity, reward, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose and contribution to the greater good.

Finding meaningful work that brings joy and fulfillment can make a significant difference in one's life. The speaker shares how he used to view work as a means to an end, something to be done so he could enjoy his weekends. However, after discovering work he enjoys and believes in, he experienced a profound shift. He felt productive, rewarded, and fulfilled, leading him to realize that he wished he had found this earlier in life. This discovery has brought him a sense of purpose and contribution to the greater good, a far cry from his past entitlement and lack of motivation. It's never too late to find work that resonates with us, and the benefits can be transformative.

    • The importance of finding meaningful workFinding work that engages and absorbs you leads to satisfaction and success in life. Dedicating time and energy to fulfilling projects brings joy and purpose.

Finding meaningful work that engages and absorbs you can lead to a sense of satisfaction and success in life. This was emphasized during a conversation about the importance of diving deeply into projects and losing track of time. The speaker expressed regret for not having done so earlier in life and encouraged their kids to do the same. This sentiment was echoed in a passage from Jean Martin's book "The Market Gardener," where the author discusses the joys of farming and the sense of purpose it brings. The speaker also mentioned an article about tomato cultivation and the man behind the preservation of many tomato seed varieties, Ben Quisenberry, who passed away at the age of 99 after dedicating his life to the cause. These examples illustrate the importance of finding work that is fulfilling and worth investing time and energy into. Hard work becomes satisfying when it serves a purpose and allows us to make a meaningful impact.

    • Finding joy and purpose in hobbies leads to a fulfilling lifePursuing hobbies can lead to longevity, opportunities, and immense enjoyment, regardless of age.

Finding joy and purpose in a hobby can lead to a fulfilling and productive life, even in old age. As Ben Quisenberry, a then 95-year-old interviewee, shared in 1982, keeping active and engaged in something worthwhile is key to longevity. If possible, turning a hobby into a business can bring even greater rewards. The speaker in this text is currently attempting to do just that with his podcast, and despite the challenges, finds immense enjoyment and connection through the process. Reflecting on his past, he marvels at how far he's come and the opportunities that have arisen from pursuing his passion. Ultimately, the message is clear: finding joy and purpose in our hobbies can lead to a rich and rewarding life, no matter our age.

    • Find your passion and make it a part of your lifeIdentify your passion, strive to incorporate it daily, and live each day to the fullest instead of just counting down to the weekend

It's important to find your passion in life and make it a significant part of who you are. If you haven't discovered it yet, don't hesitate to keep searching, especially when you're young. However, it's never too late to start. Once you've identified your passion, strive to incorporate it into your daily life. Additionally, consider whether you're living your life to the fullest or if you're merely counting down the days until the weekend. Living in anticipation of the weekend and dreading the workweek is a common but sad existence. Instead, evaluate your life situation and determine if this is truly how you want to spend your years. Remember, be nice, be thankful, and do the work to make the most of each day.

Next time you want to blame someone else for being ____ ask yourself - what did I do about it?  We are quick to blame others when we could have done more or done things differently.  It's often partially our own fault, more than we would like to admit. Admit it and be better.

Frustrated simply because I have to be more patient. I set high goals for myself and when I find myself trying to achieve things by skipping over a few steps I lose sight. I want to jump higher! I want to make progress! A LOT OF PROGRESS NOW! But I need to remember that any progress IS progress. Take a step back from the situation and understand what step you're trying to go next and make sure it's the very next step on your path. Stay patient, stay focused, make progress.
