This book is for leaders at all levels and is about owning your challenges and your mistakes. Plus taking the time to share the lessons which could be a survival guide for someone else.

We all have the choice to choose your mindset that impacts your feelings. We talked about amplifying our negative thoughts and reframing our mindset. I discussed with Renee about reframing and how this can work.

Renee’s book is 12 gifts to lead and live a life of purpose, connection and contribution.

Each chapter is dedicated to unwrapping each of the 12 gifts - Optimism, Change, Curiosity, Courage, Gratitude, Resilience, Growth, Empathy, Connection, Forgiveness, Contribution and Re-energising – with insights, stories, and case studies that illustrate how each gift can be useful, as well as practical tips on how you can reframe a challenge into an opportunity. By deepening and developing each of the 12 Gifts, which are key soft skills, we can progress ourselves and others forward.

Starting your own business at 21 with Pamela Jabbour

This week on the Lady Leadership show I caught up with Pamela Gabbour who started her own fashion business at the age of 21. There is a little bit of twist here in that Pamela noticed a gap in the market and bought fashion to uniforms. Yes, uniforms! Up until that point, uniforms had been an embroidered shirts. Pamela was fresh out of university having studied marketing plus she was able to leverage her dad's garment manufacturing business to kick off her business. Finding those first customers was hard, Pamela and I talk through how she did this, plus the fact that she was so young the majority of the people did not know it was her business and how she used this to her advantage and how she has grown the business to what it is today. For anyone wanting to start their own business - this is super inspirational!

Talking Intergenerational Leadership with Felicity Furey

Talking Intergenerational Leadership with Felicity Furey

This week on the Lady Leadership I had the pleasure of interviewing Felicity Furey is an award winning Business Leader, Engineer, Entrepreneur and Aspiring Aviator. Felicity is the founder of the Professional Leaders Institute. Felicity was named by AFR Boss as Young Executive of The Year and one the 100 Women of Influence by age 26, and has led multi-million dollar projects across Australia. Felicity now mentors high-performing teams and equips emerging leaders with the skills they need to make an impact and drive meaningful change.

To kick off this chat Felicity and I talked about Felicity’s career in Engineering - why she chose Engineering and how she then evolved her career to move into Leadership. Whilst Felicity was working in Engineering she noticed that there were not many women in Engineering and she started a not for profit to get more girls and more women into Engineering. Through this journey she raised over a million dollars from corporates and then stepped into a leadership role to run this business. This experience exposed Felicity to business through this endeavour and encourage more women into leadership.

Felicity created the Professional Leaders institute to help leaders fast track their careers and move into leadership roles. Felicity helps aspiring or emerging leaders who are moving into leadership. Felicity learnt through creating the non for profit business that she had room to fail and as such they emulate this experience.

We talked about the benefit to business of diverse leadership and also intergenerational leadership plus empowering teams.

How to stop Fear holding you back with Dr Amy Silver

How to stop Fear holding you back with Dr Amy Silver

Fear can hold you back from doing what you really desire! Fear can keep you small.

This week on the show I caught up with Dr. Amy Silver to talk about all things fear. Fear protects us and warns us of danger but often it can get too loud. Dr. Amy Silver is a highly sought-after speaker and mentor in the area of fear and fear management. Amy is a psychotherapist and is experienced in many therapies, behavioral, cognitive, mindfulness-based stress to name a few.

Amy has worked for many years works in the world of therapy and now works in business and works with people to move through their fears so it does not interrupt communication, collaboration, ability to change, and ability to create. Fear can eat our potential.

Amy has written a book called ‘The Loudest Guest’, to help people move through their fears, achieve more, and get what they want. Amy correlates Fear to being a guest at a party and that she is not the only guest at the party and that there are other guests at the party that she can pay attention to.

We talk about how fear keeps you safe and we discussed how we can have conversations with ourselves to gain control and to identify the trigger of fear. We want to be able to use the fear voice to our advantage.

Fear can look like avoidance or reacting, for example not wanting to speak up in a meeting or have a courageous conversation or perhaps not make a deeper relationship because we don’t want to get hurt. Fear can also be attacking.

If you are wanting to work on how you work with your fears when this is a great podcast to tune in to.

Starting your own product business - Talking Pronto with Shannon Gilleland

Starting your own product business - Talking Pronto with Shannon Gilleland

This week on the Lady Leadership I caught up with Shannon Gillieland. Shannon is the Founder of Pronto Bottle. Pronto bottle is the world's first self sanitising baby bottle. When Shannon became a first-time mum she experienced the issues around having sterilised and ready to go bottles for her daughter and found this to be a big hassle, particularly when travelling with her daughter. She decided to see if she could come up with some better solutions to this issue and pronto bottle was born!

I talked to Shannon about coming up with an idea right through to execution, how her background led to this, and how she went about this. Shannon didn’t just dive headfirst into this - she spent a lot of time surveying other parents and seeing what their pain points are, she then spent a lot time researching various technologies including UV light sterilisation, then she realised that she needed to build a support team around her and also bring in some experts.

We discussed how Shannon went from having an idea to building a product, to building a business and building a team and all the steps and stages of that. When she faced overwhelm and a feeling of there is so much to do. She knew that she needed to create a framework of support around her to support not only building a product but building the knowledge that she needed to build a company. Tune into this episode as Shannon shares her journey plus her path to investment and hiring abroad.

Parenting whilst working from home with Shari Medini and Karissa Tunis

Parenting whilst working from home with Shari Medini and Karissa Tunis

I had a great delight this week to interview two guests on the show - Shari Medini and Karissa Tunis. Parenting experts and founders of the popular website, Adore Them Parenting, Shari and Karissa used their time over Covid to write a book - called Parenting whilst working from home.

Shari and Karissa had both been working from home for about a decade whilst raising their families and creating their businesses - so they knew through their own experiences how to effectively combine the needs of both.

As more parents work from home than ever before, there are unique challenges when it comes to meeting the demands of their job, helping their kids thrive, and finding even five minutes to take care of themselves. Parenting While Working from Home offers tips, strategies, and reflections to help parents balance their careers, connect with their kids, and establish their inner strength over the course of a year.

We discussed that it is ok to be a working parent and we discussed some practical strategies to help combine the two. Plus we discussed how to figure this out for you and your schedule and your family. We also talked about what do you really need and also hobbies.

You are going to absolutely love this chat! Thanks, Shari and Karissa for being on the show!

Creating your own Lifestyle through Entrepreneurship with Wanda Toro Turini

Creating your own Lifestyle through Entrepreneurship with Wanda Toro Turini

This week I had the great pleasure to catch up with Wanda Toro Turini! You would describe Wanda as a seasoned entrepreneur! Wanda has a Doctorate in Pharmacy and was in critical care and emergency medicine who always had an interest in the business. She was always the person who had great ideas and wanted to make a change - as such she saw her career shifting to the marketing world.

She had the opportunity to work in Marketing in the pharmaceutical space and learn so much from a group of senior people. As such Wanda found herself in corporate and being groomed for a senior role I but saw those around her and saw the time that they had to travel and be away from their families and decided that all though she wasn’t even married nor did she have children that she wanted something different.

She literally dived off the cliff and created her own business because she couldn’t launch her business as it would have been a conflict of interest with where she worked currently. Through creating her own business Wanda has been able to work in all parts of the world and adjust her working to fit in with her lifestyle and children.

Have a listen - you are going to love listening to Wanda’s journey, the lessons that she has learned, and how her and her businesses continue to evolve.

How can you tell Magnetic stories with Gabrielle Dolan

How can you tell Magnetic stories with Gabrielle Dolan

This week on the Lady Leadership show I interviewed Gabrielle Dolan for the 2nd time. I loved catching up with Gabrielle again and this time we talked about Gabrielle’s 6th book - Magnetic stories.

Gabrielle has definitely used her time in Covid well to come out with a new book! In this chat, we talk about what makes a ‘Magnetic story’ and how businesses can use these both with their customers and with their teams to share about their businesses and tell their story. We discussed how these stories are what get customers and teams to understand the ethos of a company and connect with a company on a deeper level, to understand where they have come from and what they have done. Gabrielle cautions that this, not a timeline - it is the why and what has formed a company.

When Gabrielle was writing the book she went on the hunt to discover the great stories behind many companies. She wanted to hear the great stories of how companies came into being. She discovered the incredible story behind Barbie and how Barbie came into being which blew her mind as she had not encouraged her daughters to have Barbies. She heard stories of restaurants and patrons that were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at a particular restaurant.

We also talked about what it takes to write a book, how Gabrielle writes her books, and how the book is broken down. If you are wanting to learn how to tell powerful stories that connect then definitely check out Gabrielle’s work at gabrielledolan.com.

Lessons I learnt working in Big, Small and my own Startups.

Lessons I learnt working in Big, Small and my own Startups.

This week I am excited to celebrate 50 episodes of the podcast and as such, I thought that I would share a little more about my own background.

I recorded an episode of the podcast - Should I start my own startup and this focuses on what I have learned and I hope that this can help you in your decision making.

Growing up my Dad ran his own business and I learned quite a lot about business just sitting around the dining room table. My parents would be regularly talking about business - the good, the bad, and often the very ugly. My parents always instilled in me a strong work ethic. My parents worked hard.

Over the years I have worked in a number of startup businesses and therefore in this episode, I wanted to share what I have learned during that time. The key learnings have been business strategy, business modeling - ie how are you going to make money, product to market fit, testing this fit, trying to limit spending and test as you go, investing in your own learning, and plus a passion for what you do. You will need plenty of this in spades.

In this episode, I share some stories of the places that I have worked and where they may have gone a bit wrong. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Do you have Change Fatigue? How can you Reimagine Change with Ciara Lancaster.

Do you have Change Fatigue? How can you Reimagine Change with Ciara Lancaster.

This week on the Lady Leadership podcast I got to the catch up with Change and resilience expert - Ciara Lancaster.  After the year that we have had it was great to catch up with Ciara and talk about how we can improve our change resilience.  We talked all things change, what do for yourself, what to do for others and what do for your teams plus how can you avoid burnout and overwhelm.

As a former Change Manager at Deloitte Australia (leading teams of 500+ through change), Ciara observed a common theme where brilliant leaders were becoming incredibly stretched with endless change expectations, over and above their core work.

Behind closed doors, many shared vulnerabilities including worry, emotional turmoil and rumination at night.  Determined to make a difference, Ciara began researching, connecting with thought leaders and neuroscientists and writing her first book 'Reimagine Change' to fill the coaching gap inside organisations and workplaces.

In a world of relentless organisational change and business transformation, Ciara helps leaders with

    • Change fatigue and burnout risks and realities
    • Psychological safety and nervous system implications
    • Stress management and mindset for personal success
    • Connection and collaborative risk-taking for team success

If you or your team are struggling with change then this podcast and Ciara’s book are going to point you in the right direction.

How is your people stuff? What is the job of a leader with Zoe Routh.

How is your people stuff? What is the job of a leader with Zoe Routh.

This week on the Lady Leadership podcast I caught up with Zoe Routh. Zoe is a leadership expert and learnt how to be a leader running canoeing expeditions in the wilds of Ontario. Zoe signed up to work at a summer camp and a few years later she was leading 2 - 6 week trips canoeing the rivers in Ontario.

Being thrown together with a group of people that you don't know plus being in the wilderness is a sure way to find out what kind of leader you are. Zoe learnt how to galvanise relationships, motivate a team and also how to have the hard conversations to allow you to get along and survive.

Following this Zoe then spent time planting trees on a plantation and saw how the official leader did not bring the team together so she and others stepped up to do this. So she learnt how to be a leader when you don't necessary have the title.

These experiences then lead Zoe to work for Outward bound in Australia then work with rural communities within corporate helping them create and lead teams more effectively. Seven years Zoe created here own business to help leaders with the people stuff.

Zoe has written four books and her most recent one is called People stuff: Dealing with the tough stuff in leadership.

In this chat, we talked about the behaviours of teams and how fear of loss can trigger the flight and fight behaviours that are primal to us and we go into primal mode and survival mechanisms. Zoe has mapped these behaviours to what can occur in the workplace.

We talked about the decisions that leaders make and how to effectively communicate these and what happens when you don't communicate.  Plus what are you doing about the issues? What is your part to play? Are you heading into victim mode? Plus building tribe and team!

You are going to love this! So insightful!

Have a listen and amp up your leadership!

What are the values you learn in a small town? Rediscover who you have always been with Natalie Siston!

What are the values you learn in a small town? Rediscover who you have always been with Natalie Siston!

This week on the Lady Leadership with Sam McIntyre show I caught up with Natalie Siston from Small town leadership! Natalie grew up in Ohio in a small town of 600 people where every body knew everybody. This is the type of place where there were no stop lights.

After leaving for college and working at Fortune500 companies and in silicon valley she had realisation that lessons she learnt growing up in that small town and bringing herself back to basics were invaluable leadership lessons.

Natalie believes there are two types of people -those who want to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty and those that don't. Natalie shares how people in her town had many roles in that town and how being connected to the community and to the people made the town and those in it successful.

We talked about networking and the cycle of networking and how in a small town that this happens very naturally and it is give and take. Plus work ethic and being proud of where you come from.

Natalie has also released a new book called Let her out: Reclaim who you have always been! She recently found her diaries that she had started writing when she was eight and she re-discovered who she was and she saw the barriers that she put up in front of herself and in her book she breaks these down and talks through how you can remove these for yourself.

    Have a listen!

Is your company heading towards the talent cliff? What talent do you need with Jennifer Thornton.

Is your company heading towards the talent cliff? What talent do you need with Jennifer Thornton.

I got to catch up with fellow retail veteran and leadership expert - Jennifer Thornton this week on the Lady Leadership podcast. Jennifer started her career at the mall working first in store as it was cool to hang at the mall, then in operations and then in HR growing her career into the C-suite to the Head of International HR for a large global retailer. Jen got to travel and work around the world!

Jennifer always believed that results came from talent and it was more strategy driven and that you couldn't get the results you needed unless you had a great team. Jen had helped companies launch in different countries and different brands and she thought that perhaps she could do this for herself. As such she launched 304 Coaching where they help companies develop talent strategies to support their companies.

We talked about what Jen calls the talent cliff and how Jen's company can help businesses develop their talent to support where they are going not where they are now.  Often businesses are super focused on what the business is trying to achieve rather than can the talent support this and they go off what Jen calls the talent cliff. That is there top talent starts to lead in fear and control, good people leave and the people that stay just say yes because they don't want to get into trouble!

Jen likes to focus with her clients rather than on where they are now and the problems they have now, but rather where are they going? What do they need in 1, 3 and 5 years. What skills and competencies do they need the team to have where they are going? What are the new roles that they need and how do we get the current team ready for where they are going?

Jen likes to work with the top talent to grow and develop their skills for this future place so that this becomes the norm for the company and the company start to embrace this.

This is a must listen for leaders of teams and for Hr professionals.
