April Rinne - Finding Your Superpower Through Uncertainty

April Rinne - Finding Your Superpower Through Uncertainty

I spoke to April Rinne at the Shahjah Entrepreneurship Festival late last year, where I was invited to speak about happiness in these uncertain times. April and I got in touch through LinkedIn, and I was blown away by her work. Her writing is not instructive but more reflective and allows readers to choose from whatever superpower they think will help them through uncertainty.

April Rinne is the author of 'Flux: 8 Super Powers for Thriving in Change.' She is also a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and ranked one of the “50 Leading Female Futurists” in the world by Forbes.  She is also a mental health advocate and has devoted her career to advising individuals and organizations on how to navigate a world of constant change.

Episode 68: New Year, same ADHD

Episode 68: New Year, same ADHD

Mrs ADHD joins Alex and James for an episode which definitely isn't about New Year's resolutions (as James thinks it harms the metrics).   As usual, the episode includes bland psychoeducation delivered by Alex the Psychoeducation Monkey,  personal reflections from all three ADHD adults and the usual utterly useless 'top tips' on resolving to change things in your life.  'What has James lost, forgotten or mislaid this week?" returns and  Alex reads out the usual correspondence.  James continues to have 'jokes' trodden on, Mrs ADHD forgets she's on a podcast,  and Alex saves his resolutions in the group folder...

#493 - David McRaney - Where Do Our Beliefs Come From?
David McRaney is a psychologist, journalist and author. Where do our beliefs come from? How do we form opinions? Why are we persuaded by some points of view but not by others? These are important to understand if we are to avoid developing a biased, unrepresentative worldview, they've also been the focus of the last few years of David's research. Expect to learn how everybody in a group can believe something that nobody believes individually, why arguing online so rarely works, whether people really are becoming more ingrained into their beliefs, how the Westboro Baptist Church convinces its members, the best ways to persuade someone who disagrees with you and much more... #142 Inspirational Nourishment with Jane Clarke

#142 Inspirational Nourishment with Jane Clarke

I love hearing people's stories and today’s story is hopefully uplifting and will put a smile on your face because Jane is a true inspiration to budding health and wellbeing entrepreneurs and those who want to create social change.

Jane is a dietitian and Cordon Bleu chef with more than 30 years’ experience in the nutrition industry. She is the author of 9 best-selling books. She worked with Jamie Oliver on several of his projects, including the School Meals revolution, which showed that people-power can bring about social change. It is with this same mindset and passion that she is leading Nourish by Jane Clarke, which provides a solution to the problem of undernourishment and provides empowerment and inspiration to those who are vulnerable or facing a health challenge.

You’ll hear about Jane’s career in nutrition that has spanned 3 decades including:

    • Getting involved in Jamie’s School Meals
    • A shocking story about what happens when you challenge the powerful food industry
    • Her personal health struggles with endometriosis
    • Starting the UKs first private dieticians clinic and working with David Beckham
    • Her experience with dementia and her dad
    • The inspiration behind her new product

I wanted to talk a bit about the entrepreneurial aspect of her journey in a similar way to how we’ve done on previous podcasts with Prue leith and Liz Earle. I truly believe in the power of expert, mission led businesses to ignite sustainable change.

Doug Abrams On Why Hope Is The Antidote For Apathy

Doug Abrams On Why Hope Is The Antidote For Apathy
As we grapple with a global pandemic, experiential climate change, mass species extinction, and many other dire calamities—it can feel like the world has lost its moral center. But every solution begins with hope—the antidote to what ails us. Famed primatologist, climate activist, and global icon Jane Goodall has devoted her life to better understanding our natural world and preserving its majesty. As one can expect, the 87-year-old has some thoughts about our enduring climate crisis—thoughts that don’t revolve around cynicism, anger or pessimism—but instead are all about hope. A hope that is fierce. A hope underscored by action, empathy, and optimism. How can someone who has studied the climate crisis for the better part of her life maintain such a positive disposition in the face of humanity’s self-destructive trajectory? What does hope even mean? And why is it desperately incumbent upon all of us to cultivate hope as a strategy to best evolve as humans and a global community? Today’s guest Douglas Abrams wanted answers to these questions. Needed answers. So he sought out Jane and spent countless curious hours with her, culminating in the Book of Hope, a beautiful and intimate look into the heart and mind of a woman who has truly revolutionized how we view the world around us. Returning for his second appearance on the show, Douglas is a literary agent, editor, author, and former Stanford classmate. He initially joined the podcast back in February 2017 (RRP 274) to discuss the first in his Global Icon series of books, The Book of Joy—an instant New York Times bestseller that beautifully synthesizes a series of conversations between Douglas, The Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu on the nature of human happiness and suffering. A continuation of our former conversation, today, we pivot from joy to focus on hope. Hope as an antidote to helplessness. Hope as our greatest strength. And hope as the foundation upon which all solutions emerge. It’s also a conversation about the importance of empathy. Meeting resistance with patience. Obstinate grace. And what it means to completely devote yourself to what’s right. But mostly, this is a discussion about what we can all learn from Jane Goodall’s example. Why it’s incumbent upon all of us to shoulder an urgent but hopeful responsibility for the future of our planet. And how to best lead by example. To read more, click here. You can also watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Douglas is an impressive intellect and a charming, curious conversation partner. I always leave time spent with him better than before. My hope is that this exchange will impact you similarly. Peace + Plants, Rich

Nigel Farage: Britain's Most Controversial Politician

Nigel Farage: Britain's Most Controversial Politician

An incredibly exciting and thought-provoking episode with arguably one of Rob’s most Disruptive guests to date, broadcaster and former politician Nigel Farage! Nigel has never been shy in saying what he thinks and backing those thoughts up with actions. Listen in to this episode to hear Nigel’s honest thoughts on Coronavirus, UK politics, the world order and what being a Disruptor really means.

    Get 20% OFF + Free international shipping @manscaped with promo code ROBM20 atManscaped.com! #sponsored #manscaped

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Nigel believes that people disrupt things to challenge the status quo. Disruption is often needed to change things for the better, Nigel thinks things haven’t been disrupted nearly enough in the world yet.
    • It is plain for all to see that there are a lot of differing and polarising views on coronavirus. Nigel Farage thinks governments haven’t been honest enough from the start and it’s something we can learn to live with going forward. He is not prepared for his liberties to be taken away from him again so will not obey any further lockdowns.
    • There is a big difference of mindset between a corporate business and the entrepreneur. The government may understand big business somewhat but they certainly don’t have a clue about small businesses and entrepreneurs. Nigel’s experience of working with the political class has shown him that there is a massive disconnect between the UK government and businesses.
    • It was inevitable that Brexit was going to cause massive changes, there was always going to be winners and losers. However, Nigel thinks there are countless upsides to small business owners and entrepreneurs that the government still hasn’t utilised.
    • Tax and Welfare need reforming drastically. Past governments have de-skilled the British population and have also turned what should be a safety net, into a very large welfare state. It has changed young people’s mindsets and there is a lack of aspiration among the younger generations especially.
    • Nigel would love to run for Prime Minister but with the current UK system this is just not possible. He thinks that the UK political system needs a complete overhaul and bringing into the 21st century, starting with removing the first past to post system and the house of lords.
    • Nigel believes that Boris Johnson has a very clever act and it has got him very far in his political career. However, he thinks the mood of the public after many lies and most recently, the revealing of all of the covid parties in government, will very likely be the end to it.
    • The de-platforming and silencing of conservative voices across social media platforms is worrying to Nigel. He thinks it’s the medias way of trying to gain back control.

    BEST MOMENTS

“You’re not doing it because you’re trying to cheese everyone else off, you’re doing it actually because you think the status quo as it is needs shaking up”

“Not one of them has ever worked in a small business, not one of them has ever set one up”

“There is a complete disconnect with the world of entrepreneurship, of the world of business”

“I’m an old style free-marketer, I believe in a safety net for those that can’t look after themselves, of course I do”

“Our democracy needs to be brought into the 21st century”

“There is a limit to free speech, there always has been, but I think the limit on conservative voices is bad”
