How to Deal with Negative Emotion for Tweens

How to Deal with Negative Emotion for Tweens

There's no question that the teen years are the years of change. Everything is different. Nothing changes faster than our emotions. Tween years come with unique challenges. This period in life should come with a warning label. Caution: Dealing with Negative Emotions. BEWARE!

Join me for this episode of 9 and 1/2 Podcast, where we will be discussing some common negative emotions tweens face and how to cope with those feelings.

Ep. 29 Emotional Outburst & Addictions How do we fix them?

Ep. 29 Emotional Outburst & Addictions How do we fix them?

In today's episode, we deal with emotional outbursts and addictions. How do we fix them? Once and for all.

If you deal with the symptoms instead of the root problem, you are just asking for future problems. It’s like receiving a shot before a wisdom tooth removal. You don’t feel much at first, although you may drool a while. But when the shot wears off, you need a prescription handy, or you will be in a world of pain.  In my personal experience, it's best to try and find the actual root cause of emotional outbursts instead of treating the obvious superficial symptoms. Can you guess the root problem of addiction? It is a proven fact that the root problem for addiction is anger. Anger is designed to wake you up; It's meant to bring attention to injustice within you and your surroundings. It's designed to grab attention so you can make appropriate changes.

This is an episode you do not want to miss!

Episode 51: How to Help Your Kids with Self-regulation

Episode 51: How to Help Your Kids with Self-regulation

This week, Jodi speaks with Kristi Coppa, founder of Wondergrade. Wondergrade is an app that teaches Self-regulation skills to kids and their parents. In this episode, Kristi offers insight into how to teach your child Self-regulation, calming, and coping skills. She shares concrete tools and strategies to help parents and children alike and also discusses how and when to foster these practices with our children so that they can use them properly throughout their lives.

Shoutout to reviewer: New yawk photographr

    About Our Guest:
Kristi Coppa is a mother of two young girls, a kids mindfulness teacher, speaker, writer, and former nurse. Kristi is also the founder of Wondergrade, a digital health and education company that teaches young kids coping and self-regulation skills. She recently released the Wondergrade app, to help parents teach calm-down and self-regulation skills to their kids at home and is in the process of writing a curriculum to help teachers bring social-emotional skills into the classroom. Kristi is a native of the Pacific Northwest. She loves being outside and spends most weekends hiking, camping, wine tasting, or romping around the coast with her husband, girls, and St. Bernard, Sampson.

5:00: Kristi’s background that led her to her work
    "
I've worked with a lot of therapists and teachers, and really was working with how we can make this information really accessible and come to life for kids"

9:15: Recognizing your child's possible stress and worries
    "
Educating yourself [about how your child's stress] and how that shows up in your child's body is a really powerful (...) And what that looks like is usually being patient with yourself, and after an incident happens, going back and talking to their kid about it"

14:30: How to teach self regulation and coping skills to kids
"I use a lot of these guided visualizations with kids where we are doing something else, pretending that we're something else, while we're working on a skill"

18:15: Identifying the best times to teach these skills
    "
The absolute best time to practice a new skill is when your kid is at their happiest: So when they're fed, when they are well rested. And that's when they're going to be the most receptive to learning, that's different for every kid, but most young kids, that's like mid morning-ish time like after breakfast"

    20:45: Coping techniques
In this section, Kristi walks through calm down techniques such as squeezing lemons, elephant bends, and  hand presses

    24:15: Kristi’s app, Wondergrade
    "
It has two different sections, it has a section for grownups and a section for kids. And the kids section is full of all of our tools. So these are very tangible one to five minute videos, most of them are animated that go through teaching kids these different techniques"

Ep. 25 How The Beast Works (The Mechanics of Emotions)

Ep. 25 How The Beast Works (The Mechanics of Emotions)

In another episode of True North, as we explore our new book Control the Beast, we are looking at How the Beast Works, an understanding of the mechanics of emotions.

Emotions are a combination of elements going on at the same time. They combine mental, psychic, or physical components. These are controlled by internal mechanisms (physiological), which get the person ready for reactions to threats, better known as the "fight or flight syndrome."

So how do we control them? We have to understand behavior modification. Identifying an emotion as positive or negative does not make that emotion right or wrong. It does not make you bad or evil because you have that emotion. You need to learn, identify, and manage it. Emotions tend to balance one another to function in our somewhat civilized society; this is how behavior modification works.

Dive in and learn how to Control the Beast!

My Feelings: The Social Dilemma for REAL

My Feelings: The Social Dilemma for REAL

    Hello Everyone
Welcome to a brand new episode of House of Maharrani.

Today I am talking about social media and how it impacted me. Technology should be used as a tool to better yourself. I understand that now!

Social media impacts us all daily. A lot of us are constantly going through a lot of unnecessary stress and issues because we cannot figure out how to process most of the information we see online.

We need to figure out ways to utilize it for our benefits rather than it taking over our lives.

Please let me know in the comments below, how are you utilizing social media for your benefit?

Episode 3: Permission to Feel, Fearlessly (COVID, BLM & Philosophy)

Episode 3: Permission to Feel, Fearlessly (COVID, BLM & Philosophy)

In this super 'intersectional' conversation, Ali and I talk about 'fearing our feelings' and the urgent call to become fearless feelers during COVID and the crises of 2020! It's almost like we've been needing 'permission to feel'.

I loved making this episode while slowly coming out of COVID lockdown in London, which frankly has also felt like an 'emotional lockdown'. We have all been deeply confronted with our emotions individually and and as a society. The fears of this pandemic and the racism events in the US and globally around Black Lives Matter movement have shaken our internal selves, allowing our cores to surface. Ali and I talk about the controversy of this kind of emotional transparency as we share our personal stories. We also discuss why it's hard to admit to being driven by our emotions rather than by our thoughts as Philosopher, Spinoza, once claimed and got rejected for.

This very geeky episode weaves philosophy of emotions vs thought and connects the dots to modern psychology, politics, and literature.

Ps. This conversation was inspired in part by Brene Brown's podcast series, Unlocking Us, specifically the episode "Permission to Feel" - an interview with Dr. Marc Brackett, the Director of Centre for Emotional Intelligence at Yale University.

Thank you for lending us your ears and hearts! It's time we become fearless.

Share the word about Fearless Knowledge.

    Fearlessly yours,
    Tania and Ali
