How do I know what to do with my life? Mike Snyder (universal formulas for success)

After interviewing hundreds of young people, Mike Snyder recognized a repeating pattern, many people don't know what to do with their lives and they don't have a formula to figure it out.  In this episode, Mike shares part of a universal formula to find your purpose in life.   Mike served in the Marines for 24 years and is currently a strategic marketing consultant, speaker, and author.  You can reach Mike on Linkedin.

    Some highlights Mike shares:

    • Finding a "process driver" approach to universal formulas
    • We need a source of values to find success in the world
    • Values are what define you
    • What is the source of your values?
    • Finding the answer to two questions:  who are you? and what do you do?
    • Luck = preparation + opportunity
    • You have to do something (unless you want to be a mushroom)
    • Follow your intuition - learn to listen - the answers will come to your head and your heart
    • Life gives pushback - here are some strategies to handle pain and failure
    • Anger and resentment cause illness
    • Gratitude is an antidote for anger
    • Coming to grips with idealism - the world isn't working the way I think it should
    • We are what we think about all day
    • Humans like to complicate things - if it's more difficult it seems more credible
    • Don't make simple things complicated
    • A synopsis of the universal formula:  Who you are (personal transformation); Listen to your head and heart; Do (take action); Prepare (invest in yourself); Use gratitude to get through pain and suffering
    • Don't give up - you can do it

    95 - Solve For Happy

    95 - Solve For Happy

In this episode, Cindy Esliger explains the idea of solving for happiness. Solving for happiness as a concept has gained increasing attention in recent years. It involves identifying factors that contribute to our well-being and taking action to cultivate more of these things in our daily lives. Cindy shares how to go about ensuring this happiness.

We spend a significant portion of our lives at work or working so the quality of our professional lives can have an impact on our overall happiness. In the stress and challenge of the work environment, it gets hard to remain positive. But if we’re happy at work, we’ll experience improved health and performance. We will never be happy every single moment at work, that’s not realistic, but it’s important to identify all the factors, not just pay, that contribute to our happiness and ensure they’re present.

Cindy identifies all the factors that can affect job satisfaction, positively and negatively, and encourages us to assess our workplaces to ensure they are aligned with our values. Happiness is largely something cultivated within which is why solving for happiness involves self-assessment and intentionally promoting the things that fulfill us. Cindy offers six tips for creating happiness in our careers and reminds us to take charge of our own happiness.

    Stop Monkeying Around

    Stop Monkeying Around

Join me on a journey to stop monkeying around and embrace a more empowered and fulfilling life. In today's episode of Navigate the Day, inspired by the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius, we explore the transformative power of taking responsibility for our pain.

It's time to shift our perspective and let go of the miseries and complaints that weigh us down. Marcus Aurelius reminds us to ask ourselves, "Why am I troubled? What's truly confounding?" By examining the source of our troubles, we gain clarity and open the door to personal growth.

Taking responsibility is not about self-blame or dwelling on the past; it's about recognizing that we have a greater hand in shaping our lives than we may realize. Instead of indulging in negativity, let's reframe our mindset and focus on what truly matters.

One aspect where we can take responsibility is in our relationships. Are we being empathetic and kind to ourselves and others? It's time to show up with greater understanding and compassion. By accepting our role in the suffering caused by a breakup or any other pain, we can begin to heal and make amends.

We're invited to sit with the source of our troubles, whether internal or external, and discern what truly deserves our attention. More often than not, we'll find that the matters we complain about are trivial in nature. It's time to let go of the trivial and direct our energy towards what truly brings meaning and joy to our lives.

As we navigate life's challenges, let's adopt a more straightforward and kind approach towards ourselves and others. Let's cultivate empathy, gratitude, and acceptance. By taking responsibility for our pain, we open the door to personal transformation and create a brighter future.

Join me in this empowering journey of self-discovery and growth. Together, let's navigate the day with a renewed sense of purpose, resilience, and a commitment to stop monkeying around and embrace the opportunities life presents us.

Stay tuned for more insights, inspiration, and practical tools to navigate life's twists and turns. Remember, it's time to rise above the noise, take responsibility, and create a life that aligns with our truest selves. Let's stop monkeying around and embrace the extraordinary possibilities that await us.

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!

    What Makes You A Servant

    What Makes You A Servant

Hey there, welcome to another episode of Navigate the Day! Today's episode is all about power and desire, inspired by an excerpt from Seneca's play "Thyestes." In the dialogue between Tantalus and Thyestes, they discuss the idea that power is subjective and only exists in relation to our desires and wants. It implies that desire or the lack of it plays a crucial role in our perception of power.

Our journal prompt for today is "What power does all my wanting take away from me?" As I reflect on this prompt, I realize that my current desires are preventing me from appreciating what I do have in life and learning how to face difficulties. Although some of my desires may be reasonable, I need to focus on where I am currently and how to move forward instead of longing for things that are unobtainable.

I have been struggling with anxiety and self-hate, which has made it difficult for me to work and has led to financial difficulties. However, I am now realizing that my problem may not be seeking praise from an outside source, but rather seeking pride in myself and the effort I put into my daily life and tasks. Perhaps, by focusing on what I am capable of, I can work towards accepting my current circumstances and finding a way to work with them rather than against them.

I know that the next several months will be challenging for me, but by letting go of my desires and focusing on my capabilities, I can gain a sense of power and control over my situation. It's time to turn my focus inward and find the power within myself to navigate the challenges ahead.

Thanks for tuning in to Navigate the Day, and remember, by letting go of our desires, we can gain power and control over our lives. Stay motivated and keep navigating your day!

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!

Oliver Burkeman on Embracing Finitude and Completing a Few Meaningful Things

Oliver Burkeman on Embracing Finitude and Completing a Few Meaningful Things

This is the last episode before we take a podcasting break for the holidays. See you back here in January 2022!

And yes, we’re trying out a new name. The focus of the podcast has become broader than the topic of “taking a gap year.” So the new name is [B]OLDER: Making the most of growing older.

In other words, boldly reinventing life and work at midlife and beyond.

Debbie is always on the lookout for guests who can lend a new perspective to the concept of time and our perception of how much of it we have. So when she read Oliver Burkeman’s new book, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, she knew he had to come on the show.

Plus the book is terrific and it's getting lots of notice.

The first sentence is “The average human life span is absurdly, terrifyingly, insultingly short.” In other words, about 4,000 weeks.

Oliver is a British author and journalist who wrote a popular weekly column, This Column Will Change Your Life, for The Guardian for over a decade. He has reported from London, Washington and New York and recently moved with his wife and son from Brooklyn, NY back to Yorkshire in the UK to be near his family.

He has established himself as a tongue-in-cheek expert on productivity and time management and how that does - or does not - lead to happiness.

He sums up his new book very nicely in his Twitter profile: explaining that 4,000 Weeks is about embracing limitation and finally getting round to what matters.

As he's 46, he's only lived about 2,400 of those 4,000 weeks himself but he tells Debbie in this episode  that he may be getting closer to a better relationship with time.

Debbie and Oliver talk about time and self-worth, why we are so future-oriented, the connection between time and happiness, and why it might be okay that we use social media as a distraction.

Oliver is a contrarian thinker but he's truly interested in how to build a meaningful life. Debbie had a number of aha moments in this conversation and listeners will too!

Finding Your Life Purpose And Meaning | Episode 18

Finding Your Life Purpose And Meaning | Episode 18

“Finding Your Life Purpose and Meaning in Today's World” provides practical ideas focused on life purpose and meaning. Desire for purpose and meaning in life is a part of our nature. Our greater ancestors brought purpose and meaning to their lives through their connection to Nature, devotion to their community, and respect for spirituality, and their cultural heritage and rituals. Even finding life purpose in different stages of their life was done with outmost respect and celebration through sacred rituals and ceremonies in Nature, such as Vision Quest and Rites of Passage.

This podcast describes a contemplative process that, when done with full intention, helps you find your purpose and guiding vision in life. This process involves an ontological imagination or thought experiment in search of insights. It can also be called an Ontological Vision Quest with your higher mind and imagination.

Takeaways & Reflections | Finding Purpose & Turning the Page

Takeaways & Reflections | Finding Purpose & Turning the Page

We often find our purpose through our pain. Or are lead to our purpose through our pain. Either way, there's often a strong, deep desire to find meaning through the terrible life experiences we've gone through.

I'm no exception to that, and many of my guests aren't either. Darren created AfterCloud, a "life-tech" app for capturing life's most precious moments and memories to make it both easy to do so, and in the process, create a legacy. It's also used in music therapy and has a lot of potential for many different types of scenarios. I could even see it being used by someone who wishes to document their rehabilitation process and journey after a tragic accident. They can then share their thoughts, feelings, etc., with whomever they choose.

My other guest, Arielle, has found her work in Hospice care to be enriched and deepened by her life experience with grief and loss.

Both guests, including myself, have found a way to turn the page on our grief. When we stop putting one foot in front of the other, that's when we get stuck on the page. We find ourselves ruminating in the story of what happened when we avoid digging into how it made us feel at the time. Furthermore, not delivering the communications to those who have hurt us, only further roots our grief more deeply into our hearts.

The beautiful thing about grief recovery is that it enables grievers to turn the page, address all of those emotions, and deliver those communications without ever speaking to the other person. And, if the person has died, it's still possible! And, to me, that's the amazing gift of grief recovery - it's a means, framework, and evidence-based program for turning the page.
