Ep 19: A Conversation with Benoit Calvet

This week our guest is Benoit Calvet, the founder of Maison Benoit Valerie Calvet in Bordeaux. Benoit and his partner Valerie have been making wine for forty years, producing excellent wines from France, Spain and Italy. They recently partnered with Wine Insiders for our Ruby Anniversary Collection creating a red blend with a very interesting backstory that he shares with me. We’re going to talk about everything from family and the earth’s frequency to hypnotherapy, horses and more. And of course, we’ll taste wine, so pour a glass and join us.

For our tasting (timecode 16:56:00), we begin with De La Rougerie Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp, medal-winning wine with notes of greengage and apple. Next we pop a cork on the delightful, Spanish sparkling wine Toro Loco Cava Brut Rosé. We'll top the episode off with a sneak peak at the upcoming Maison Calvet Red Blend that is available in August as part of our Ruby Wine Collection.

    8. Let’s Talk Bordeaux….and Why You Should Have Some In Your Life!

Have you always wanted to know more about Bordeaux wines and maybe even drink more from this region but thought it was beyond your reach?

I think Bordeaux gets a bad rap sometimes. People often think it’s too fancy, too complicated….and perhaps most often, too expensive.  But Bordeaux doesn’t have to be any of these things…especially expensive.  Did you know that most Bordeaux wines are actually quite affordable?

In this episode, I get into a little bit about Bordeaux as a region, what styles of wine are available and what bargains can be had.  Listening to this episode will hopefully convince you to dive into this fascinating region if you haven’t already!

    Happy listening. Cheers!

    Wine and World War II

    Wine and World War II

Similar to World War I, World War II had a profound effect on the European wine industry.  From labor shortages to Nazi looting, it was a very difficult time for the industry - but it was also a period that produced some standout war year vintages. To discuss  wine and World War II, the MacArthur Memorial Podcast recently hosted Walter Wolf III—a lawyer, military historian, and wine expert. The conversation focused on French and Italian wine, the ties between resistance movements and the wine industry, Nazi wine looting, and an evaluation of the Nazi palate.

    Homeward Bound

    Homeward Bound

Claire has been traveling throughout France constantly. A dream job for sure, but her work as a wine buyer for a 'big box' store has its downside too. She's been in constant motion for a few years at this point and so much so that she doesn't even maintain her own  home. That is about to change.
In need of a break, she heads for her mother's home - The Beekeeper's Cottage - in California. Along the way Claire meets a French winemaker and Laurente's fingerprints seem to be everywhere Claire turns.

Everything you need to know about natural wine

Everything you need to know about natural wine

Natural wine is definitely having a moment. But what is it? How is it different from “regular” wine? And why is it swiftly becoming one of the most sought-after categories in the beverage market?

On this week’s podcast, we’re going deep with Allison and Bradley Kruse, owners of Nonfiction Natural Wines, about exactly that. We delve into the world of natural wines, a tradition of wine-making that’s been around for centuries, but which saw a resurgence in France during the 1990s. We discuss the processes that make natural wine, the qualities that distinguish it and the reasons why it’s so popular among a new generation of wine drinkers. Along the way, we attempt to dispel some of the myths surrounding the natural wine trend, hone in on some of the reasons to get excited about it, and offer listeners tips and tricks on purchasing, storing and enjoying some of the most interesting wines on the market.

Be sure to stay tuned for the Spirited Second, a special Bar Month feature with Brandon Reyes of Bittercube Bar & Bazaar. This week, we’re sampling a rare riff on Chicago’s favorite shot, Malort, and talking about the role of wormwood in spirits.
