Episode 62: Alexandra Justyna, Love-Starved to the Bread of Life (Poland)

Episode 62: Alexandra Justyna, Love-Starved to the Bread of Life (Poland)
Alexandra Justyna had overcome so much before coming to Jesus: drug and alcohol addiction, abuse, bullying. But it was actually her eating disorder that trumped everything else and did the most harm.

And getting caught with an expired license? It was where God worked to get her in church, in the Word and on the way to real transformation through Jesus. Alexandra was so love-starved that when she encountered the Bread of Life, Alexandra had a mighty transformation.  She shares how being transformed by the renewing of her mind helped her overcome not just her eating disorder, but also helped her walk in truth and freedom from all sorts of addiction, giving listeners helpful tips to do the same.

106 Say "Yes" with Maris King

"Cuz that's all God is; is a single cell of Love inside our hearts. And we've forgotten."
    [32:43] Maris

Crying at yoga. Falling off of bikes. Hitting children on bikes. Drinking whiskey and smoking Marb Reds. The Untethered Soul. Grounding. It's a coming back. We've forgotten. How can I find more love and compassion? Getting burnout in recovery. The gifts of therapy. Moments change the trajectory of how I interact with the world. The mental battle of saying "yes" to life. Love…always love. Everything is a greater call for love. Love or fear…the only choices. Finding beauty in the suffering. We came here to feel everything. It took being Stripped of every freedom for me to surrender. Upon the shores of darkness there is light. Finding REAL humility and grace. Constant gratitude  Returning to pure innocence and awe of childhood….utter trust. Taking up space and letting go of the outcome. Taste every last drop.

Episode 17: The Amazing Transformation of Austin Delgado, Part 1

Hear Austin Delgado’s astonishing transformation from addict to pastor. His past of drugs led him to a double life–by day, a law clerk, by night, a homeless junkie. As God does, He worked in mysterious ways right at Austin’s rock bottom, where Austin’s desperation led him to use Bob Marley songs to pray to God the only way he knew how.

God answered those prayers as Austin’s two worlds soon collided and his fallacy was exposed. Be encouraged as you see how God miraculously heals Austin from his addiction and the lies he tried to hide it with.

    Part 1

Hear the mindset of an addict as Austin takes us through his sad past. Austin shares how he was “utterly enslaved by the needle,” which caused him to lie, cheat and steal for his addiction. See how our times of desperation allow God to do His most amazing work.

ROBERT KANTER OFFERS HOPE TO FAMILIES AFFECTED BY OPIOID EPIDEMIC

ROBERT KANTER OFFERS HOPE TO FAMILIES AFFECTED BY OPIOID EPIDEMIC
Robert Kanter, International Recovery Advocate and Legislative Activist, is hopeful over the recent groundbreaking 26 billion dollar settlement reached by 3 of the largest opioid drug distributors in America and manufacturer Johnson and Johnson. Most of the money will go toward addiction treatment in communities hardest hit by the opioid epidemic. He is honest and authentic as he recounts his own personal recovery from substances and that of his daughter's, who recently celebrated 3 years of recovery from opioids. Mr. Kanter describes the desperation he felt as the parent of a child with Opioid Use Disorder and how her struggles became the genesis of his advocacy work. He talks about learning how to connect with her in a loving way , using a de-stigmatized approach based on harm reduction, which ultimately led to her entering treatment. He speaks to parents of children suffering from Opioid Use Disorder, advising them to do research in order to arm themselves with tools and information. He offers 3 websites that can help families navigate treatment services and build a community of support. By learning how to navigate the system, parents can access available life-saving resources and tools. Mr. Kanter describes the Family Support Services for Addiction Act of 2021, legislation that he helped establish. He comments on his latest article in Psychology Today, Commitment Yields Success in 12-Step Programs, which explains what someone needs to do to fully recover from Substance Use Disorder. He offers advice to people struggling with Opioid Use Disorder and their families. Robert Kanter is deeply passionate and personal as he offers help, hope and inspiration for people affected by the opioid epidemic.

Takeaways & Reflections | Coming Home To Ourselves

Takeaways & Reflections | Coming Home To Ourselves

Generational learning and ancestral trauma run deep in families. It's not even something I gave much thought to before becoming an Advanced Certified Grief Recovery Specialist.

In episode 37, Angela shared how the lessons her mom was taught were passed down generations, impacting her life ten-fold.

It takes courage to break the cycle of generational learning because it takes action and deep, internal work to address it.

In this week's episode, I talk more about my takeaways and reflections from Angela's episode and also from Shandra's episode, where she shared about her memory loss.

I share today, my reflections about the impact of not connecting the dots of our grief to our behaviors and about what's in a name.

Angela and Shandra both had to find their way back home to themselves, in ways that required each of them to address what they thought was the truth. They found what was true for themselves and, in my personal experience of having done the same, have felt more at home in my own skin than I ever have.

We are all just walking each other home (a quote I read not long ago). And, at the same time, finding our way back to ourselves, too.

Angela Williams | Abused by My Mother, Homeless, & Heroin Addict to Ph.D.

Angela Williams | Abused by My Mother, Homeless, & Heroin Addict to Ph.D.

Based on the experiences she had in the first decade of her life, Angela was destined for a life of struggle, and, as her mom declared - die with a needle in her arm by the time she was 16. This prophecy nearly came true more than once. Instead, she got her Ph.D..

A life of trauma, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by her mother led to early motherhood, heroin addiction, looking for love in all the wrong places, and losing her son to her own mother who put him in foster care. It would take over a decade for her to get her son back.

As her book describes, she was a child that fell through the cracks of the system. And, nearly paid with her life for it. Her story is a hero's journey where she paved her own path out of living hell.

Can You Really Find Calm After Years of Chaos? with Robert Delude

Can You Really Find Calm After Years of Chaos? with Robert Delude

Robert Delude is the host of the None of Your Business Podcast, where he talks to his entrepreneurial guests about anything but their business (you can check out an earful I gave him about my own personal struggles and successes in an upcoming episode), but today, I flip the script on him to get him to talk about why he is so focused on helping others climb out of dark places in life. He shares his story of a chaotic childhood where he didn't think he fit in.  It was only when he first got high at 12 yrs old that he felt better.  This need to detach from his insecurities became a need to get high.  This quickly turned into a decade of selling drugs, toxic relationships and hiding his true self from anyone he knew.

It was only when an older friend who got recovery took him under his wing was he really able to stay on a path through recovery. He is now forging ahead, feeling more confident, working on himself, fleeing from people who tap into his codependency or ignite his self-sabotaging.

His story isn't finished, but it's an inspiration as to what can happen and how good life can be when you start to fight the dark emotions, keep sticking with what you know works, and allow others to care about you.

    Cannabis as an addiction treatment

    Cannabis as an addiction treatment

When Dr. Joseph Morgan worked in addiction medicine, his clinic wouldn’t even admit patients if their primary substance was cannabis. Years later, he developed a treatment protocol to treat opioid addicts with cannabis.

“CBD will reduce cravings, whether it's for cigarettes, whether it's for heroin or cocaine. THC has impacts on the endogenous opioid system to get the body to release its own opioids,” Dr. Morgan said in an interview on The Cannabis Enigma podcast. “There's a lot of benefits for using cannabis and THC to treat opioid addiction.”

Dr. Morgan has brought cannabis research to a host of unexpected and fascinating areas — including as a possible treatment for chemical warfare exposure. He also found a way to conduct cannabis research that bypasses the impossible restrictions imposed by federal cannabis prohibition in the United States.

“Delta-9-THC, the main psychoactive component is actually legal, if it is synthetic,” he explained. Using legal versions of the chemical components of cannabis, he reconstructs the plant’s active ingredients in order to study its effects in rodents — and himself.

“I also had it prescribed to me as compound pharmacy, starting with dronabinol. The pharmacist wanted to see all the certificates of analysis, and I gave him the original stock bottles...and he said he would be able to do that. And so, I have basically a legal cannabis mimic prescribed to me as a liquid.”

Dr. Morgan also explained how one of more notorious side effects of cannabis can actually be a positive aspect for some medical patients.

“Short-term memory loss is a negative property when you're having a conversation — you forget what you're talking about — but when it helps you to forget about pain, forget about thinking about pain, and especially in the setting of endometriosis, it's a very positive property,” he said.

Dr. Joseph Morgan will be speaking at the CannX Conference on October 26-28, 2020.

In the second segment of the episode, Associate Policy Coordinator of Americans for Safe Access, Andrew Coon, discusses the hurdles pediatric cannabis patients and their families face in schools. With so many states declaring the areas around schools “drug free zones,” it makes it very difficult for pediatric cannabis patients to administer their medicine during school hours — a problem that most other medications do not pose.

Edited and mixed by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man. Produced by Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man and Matan Weil. Music by Desca. The Cannabis Enigma podcast is a co-production of The Cannigma and Americans for Safe Access.
