Out of Bounds #4: ¡Three Amigos!

We're back baby!  It's been a while and we know you've all been missing the show, but we have been a little busy.  Slow Pitch HQ moved from Montana to Kansas we've added to the descendants who will reap the whirlwind of an inheritance from us.  In other words Sean had a baby.  Congrats Sean!  Anyway, Sean and Brad review another Out of Bounds movie. This time it's ¡Three Amigos!  Instead of going into a long discussion about the importance of the plight of the 1930s Mexican peasant or the big studio strangle-hold on actors in the early days of Hollywood, Sean and Brad basically recount all of the jokes in the movie. Or is it recant?  Do you want to take a walk and kiss us on the veranda?

    Next episode: One on One

You can rent One on One from any of the major media players or you can borrow it from your local library...maybe...

Jackie and Greg get nice and uncomfortable for Todd Solondz's HAPPINESS from 1998. Topics of discussion include the film's controversial subject matter, how it walks the line between satire and sincerity, the great ensemble cast, and why it's one of the best films of the 90s.

The monthly S'mores series is an offshoot from our main series, where Jackie and Greg explore films from the fringes of cinema, encompassing underground, experimental, cult, camp, genre, horror, and B-movies. S'mores episodes are unlocked by becoming either a Patron or Friend of the Show (see below). These episodes are released on the last Tuesday of each month.

Happiness & Angry Birds Slingshot Stories

Happiness & Angry Birds Slingshot Stories

This week you might need to grab a box of tissues and that’s not just because of our unrelenting dad sexiness but also because we’re going to be getting all emotional in emotions week as we start things off by counting down the top 5 Tearjerkers, the movies that squeezed tears out of the empty space where our souls used to be.

Todd Solondz's 1998 black comedy HAPPINESS is a movie so relentlessly dark I had to watch it with night vision goggles on. Sort of focusing on the unhealthy relationship between the Jordan sisters; Helen, a bored celebrity ice queen author with fantasies of sexual violence, Trish, an unfulfilled housewife trapped in a sham marriage and Joy, a sensitive but dim-witted free-spirit searching for love, this is also the kind of movie where mouth-breathing incels lounge around in their underwear making abusive phone calls whilst jacking off, a lonely frump seeking connection murders and dismembers her neighbourhood rapist and the final scene features an 11 year old boy triumphantly announcing they've achieved their first ever orgasm. Not to mention the film’s most infamous scenes featuring Dylan Baker's Bill, a predatory psychiatrist which I have in fact now mentioned. HAPPINESS is not a bad movie but it is a deeply unpleasant one, with its depressive mood and view of mankind as putrid, self-involved slaves to their nastiest impulses becoming absolutely over-bearing by the end. Maybe that's the point, this isn’t the most profound movie of all time.

In our final section of the show we'll be exploring anger via the medium of animated birds and fascist pigs trapped in an endless cycle of violence with Netflix’s ANGRY BIRDS SLINGSHOT SERIES.  Slingshot? Slingshit more like.

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

    Until next time, we remain...

Saturday Night Live alum Victoria Jackson

Saturday Night Live alum Victoria Jackson

Saturday Night Live alum Victoria Jackson talks with Paul Cardall about her experience on the popular NBC American sketch comedy show. Born in a conservative Southern Baptist home, what led an outspoken Christian to Hollywood where she was a regular on the Tonight Show. Victoria talks about SNL Producer Lorne Michaels inviting her to New York City to audition. From 1986 to 1992 she worked along side other comedians like Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Phil Hartman, Nora Dunn, Al Franken,  Jan Hooks, Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Ben Stiller, Mike Meyers, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, and countless others. Paul and Victoria talk about being the challenges she had as a conservative Christian who often found herself in Lorne Michaels office asking not to participate in skits because of her family values. In addition to SNL, Paul and Victoria talk about how she developed her gift that shaped her life's purpose. She talks about her bible study group and people she admires, Paul was laughing quite a bit through this interview.

    ABOUT VICTORIA JACKSON

Born in 1959, Victoria Jackson grew up in a Bible-believing, piano-playing, TV-free home in Miami. Her father coached gymnastics so she competed from age 5-18. Her gymnastic skill led to a college scholarship to Furman University, where she was cast in her first play and got the acting bug.

When Johnny Crawford (The Rifleman) met her at a Birmingham summer stock production, he bought her a one-way ticket to Hollywood to be in his night club act.  For two years, she held odd jobs in the show-biz capital — as a cigarette girl, waitress, and typist — until Johnny Carson noticed her stand-up routine and put her on The Tonight Show… twenty times. After that, she starred in many movies and TV shows, most notably six seasons on Saturday Night Live.

Jackson was reunited with and married her high school sweetheart, helicopter pilot Paul Wessel in 1992 and when he retired in 2013 from the Miami Dade Police Dept. they moved to Nashville to be near their daughters and grandchildren. Jackson still appears in occasional films, does stand up comedy, sings her original ukulele songs around town and most recently was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the International Christian Film Festival for her role as Alma in Lost Heart (2021). Jackson authored Is My Bow Too Big? published by White Hall in 2012 about how she got on TV, and in 2017 she wrote Lavender Hair, published by Broadstreet, about her breast cancer journey and recovery.

Jackson was just nominated for Best Actress at the 168 Film Festival 2022 for the short film, "Birthday Brash." She is currently on tour with her stand up act.

    S3 E16 - Sister

    S3 E16 - Sister

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 16, Sister, which originally aired on February 11, 2014 and was directed by Max Winkler and written by Matt Fusfeld & Alex Cuthbertson.

Here’s a quick recap of the episode:

Jess has to go pick up her sister and is desperate to keep Abby and Nick apart. Meanwhile, Bertie’s having a dinner that the whole loft is invited to and Schmidt tries to hook up with his rabbi’s daughter.

We discuss Pop Culture References such as:

Additional Pop Culture References such as:

    • Julia Child - In response to Nick saying he wanted to make a good impression for Abby, Schmidt said he wanted Julia Child not to be dead. Julia Child was an American cooking teacher, author, and television personality recognized for bringing French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her television programs.
    • Sammy Davis Jr. - When Nick said he was a goofball, the Rabbi at the Bar Mitzvah said, “Sammy Davis Jr. Was a goofball. You, sir, are no Sammy Davis Jr.” Samuel “Sammy” Davis Jr. was an American singer, dancer, actor, comedian, film producer and television director. Among other aspects of his life, he was also part of the Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, with whom he starred in several films.

For our Most Likely To segment, we discuss which one of us is most likely to show up unexpectedly to a family member’s place, make 10-11 soups for dinner, be a wingman, and order food to someone else’s room. We also cover the Shabbat-hello as our “Schmidtism” this episode. We explore the careers of Jon Lovitz (Rabbi), Linda Cardellini (Abby Day), and Allyn Rachel (Rachel), the Guest Stars we feature in this episode.

Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Jamie Lee Curtis (Joan Day - Previously Discussed in S2E8), Jessica Chaffin (Bertie - Previously Discussed in S3E9), Steve Agee (Outside Dave - Previously Discussed in S2E17), Bunny Levine (Shirley), Jay Hawkins (Cop), Jeanette Branch (Tat’d Up Gal), Thom Khoury Williams (Dr. Nussbaum), Gary Dunkel (Bar Mitzvah Guest), and Juliet Tondowski (Flirty Yoga Girl).

We also cover Jess not having the perfect driving record that she mentions in this episode, the goof when Jess' sister taps her empty wine glass and suddenly her glass is full, and we finally found the bear when Jess said “I didn’t put the cap back on the honey bear”.

Throughout this episode, we found these references to the Jewish faith:

    • Bar Mitzvah - Jewish coming of age ritual (the word bar is used for a boy, and bat/bas for a girl).
    • Hamantaschen - An Ashkenazi Jewish triangular filled-pocket pastry, associated with the Jewish holiday of Purim.
    • Rabbi - A spiritual leader or religious teacher in Judaism.
    • Baruch atah, Adonai (referenced as: Baruch atah Ado-nice dress) - Literally translates to “Blessed are You, the Eternal;” the beginning of many Hebrew blessings.
    • Shabbat Shalom (referenced as: Shabbat Sha-hello) - A phrase used to express good wishes on or before the Jewish sabbath.
    • Shanda - A shame or disgrace.

This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika and 7.5/10 from Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Nick!

Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 17!
