Reuben Whelan on running a marathon through Dublin Mountains, having a running community and Half IronMan goals

Reuben Whelan on running a marathon through Dublin Mountains, having a running community and Half IronMan goals

In this week's episode, Seán and Eric look to the Any Given Runday Running CLub for motivation for the podcast as Reuben posts in the group about getting up at 4:30 am to run a marathon through the mountains.

Reuben has been a member of the running group from day 1 and has helped motivate the group by documenting his progress. In this podcast, he talks about:

     - Why he did he run a marathon distance through the mountains this past Saturday
     - His first experience with the Dublin Marathon (after a horrific injury) that almost put him off running forever
     - The importance of being around like-minded people when getting involved with running
     - His previous running mistakes and what advice he would give to people setting out to run more now
     - Why he decided to compete in a Half Ironman
     - The welcoming community of triathlons after he competed in his first one.
     - His training journey to his first Half Ironman and the lofty goals he set
     - His future goals, one of which Eric has committed to do with him in the future.

This podcast episode, like the running group its self, is all about motivating each other to just do it and not always be concerned with the numbers, as long as you are pushing yourself.

    Strength Training Marathon

    Strength Training Marathon

Episode 5 of the Any Given Runday Podcast and we are catching up with Seán and how he wants to combine gym sessions for strength training along with his running. One of Seán's biggest beliefs with marathon training is that too many runners are getting injured because they do little to no strength training.

So we talk about the exercises he recommends, approach to nutrition and more.

0:40: A very important PSA concerning last week's episode.

1:30: Why Seán believes that more strength training is beneficial to running marathons

4:40: The type of strength training Seán does and his previous experiences balancing it with running.

6:05 Incorporating injury prevention with marathon training

8:35: If Seán had to pick 3 exercises only for strength training to prepare for a marathon, what would they be?

10:30: Seán's approach to nutrition, why he would lean more towards a low carb diet instead of counting calories

18:15: Balancing leg day with doing runs

21:55: The jump between 10km and a half marathon in comparison to half marathon and full and the mindset training for those milestones.

26:10 The lads talk about their experiences hitting "The Wall".

30:20: Great marathon training advice from Conor... that none of the lads will actually follow!

    GAA & Marathon Training

Is it possible to do both and how would you go about training for both?

1:10: A clueless Seán asks what a halfback is as Conor explains what his role on the pitch is.

2:20: The balance between hurling/marathon training, what does Conor's training schedule look like and does Conor bulk up for hurling, making his marathon harder?

5:45: The demands of the game of hurling and how does it transfer to marathon training

8:15: How Conor manages his time between hurling, marathon training, gym work and recovery days

10:20: Why 'you never do a marathon on your own'

11:35: Conor's tough love story when training with Seán before the 2019 Dublin City Marathon

13:20: Finding accountability and a 'why' to your training.

14:45: Fear of failure and why it's never as big a deal as you think it may be

16:50: How preseason hurling training is going to affect Conor's marathon training

17:35: Eric's biggest pet hate about GAA and Championship season. That Seán also agrees with.

Heart Rate Training, Garmin and Run Forrest

Running your first Marathon - #2

Running your first Marathon - #2

In this episode, the lads talk about their first marathon experience along with the training, or lack of training, Aaron has done over the last few years leading to his first marathon.

0:32: Aaron's first-ever marathon, how prepared is he for the next 16 weeks and what is his plan?

3:20: Why trying to match someone else's pace could be the worst thing you could do in a marathon.

6:50: On the flip side, there always seems to be at least one person in a race that there's a constant battle of passing/getting passed out by.

8:20: The little mental games and the big challenges to getting through your first marathon.

10:00: Race day atmospheres and running series. Are they essential to build-up towards a marathon?

12:50: A look at what is to come in next week's episode

    What is Any Given Runday?

    What is Any Given Runday?

Episode 1 of Any Given Runday gives you an introduction into the four of us and why we have decided to come together and run a marathon in Madrid at the end of April while documenting our journey through this podcast and social media.

It is an accountability group that will help push the 4 of us to our limits. With the first episode, you will see how we all have four different, unique backgrounds as well as four different approaches to what we think will be the best way for us to run a marathon.

Seán is the gym rat who reckons he can improve his marathon time but basing his training around strength-based exercises rather than 4-5 runs a week. An unconventional approach to a marathon that might just work.

Eric has also done two marathons. He is looking to complete an IronMan in the near future and bases is training on Heart Training training while also improving his cycling and open water swimming. Learn how he "goes slow to go fast" on race day. He has the fastest marathon time out of the group at 3:35 PB.

Conor has done 2 marathons before but is trying to do his third along with balancing his training schedule around preseason hurling training which starts in a few short weeks. How do you balance playing halfback in hurling with the demands of running a marathon?

Aaron is doing his first ever marathon and last did a 5km two years ago. How will he approach his first marathon and will he lean towards any of the advice he hears on this podcast over the next few weeks or go his own way?

With the Christmas period over, the 16 Week countdown to Madrid has begun!
