    ...about In The Cut (2003)

“In The Cut” is the most maligned film from this year’s Oscar darling Campion. A dreamy paranoid feminist subversion of the erotic crime thriller full of edgy unique performances from all its stars.

Directed by Jane Campion. Screenplay by Jane Campion & Susanna Moore. Starring Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, Kevin Bacon, Nick Damici, Patrice O’Neal & Sharrieff Pugh

How is the world wrong about In The Cut

From Bryan Connolly: Nobody liked this when it came out, turned off by America’s darling Meg Ryan getting down and dirty. She gives a raw performance here that is hands down one of her best. Ruffalo has never been better, fully immersed as a complex cop. Difficult characters in a difficult film. I love it.

    Produced by Andras Jones
Hosted by Andras Jones & Bryan Connolly
    Executive Producer: Erica Russel

    Meg Ryan

    Meg Ryan

Over the course of her career, Meg Ryan has been acclaimed for both dramatic and comedic roles. But it was her unforgettable performance in WHEN HARRY MET SALLY that made her Hollywood’s romcom queen... at least until declining box office returns in the 2000s started to take the shine off her crown, but could she be poised for a comeback? Order what she’s having and take a look at “WTF Happened to Meg Ryan!”

    In the Cut

    In the Cut

2003: a wonderful year. The same year both Ryan and I graduated from high school, the year Chicago (2002) weirdly won Best Picture at the Academy Awards (even though Sam Raimi’s glorious Spider-Man was also released). 2 Fast 2 Furious came out, as well as Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, I mean, what total gems we were gifted…and then In the Cut.

Ryan may never forgive me, but what makes it worthwhile is Mark Ruffalo’s nude scene. Cheers to Jane Campion, who was, until very recently, the only woman to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. She now shares that honor with Julia Ducournau for Titane (2021). I wonder if it will also feature a nude Harvey Keitel as in The Piano (1993)?

This is another Director’s Cut film, so if you want to see the same version you’ll have to purchase it. Grab it from whichever video outlet you prefer. I haven’t seen a blu ray version, other than it being included in a 2-pack that comes with Trapped (2002). If you want to witness the nonsense without the nudity, but why would you want to do that since the Ruffalo nudity is the only reason to watch this tripe, you can stream it for FREE on Hulu. The theatrical cut is also available to stream (paid) on Google, iTunes, and Amazon.

Suzsplaining: Screwball vs. Contemporary Rom Com

Suzsplaining: Screwball vs. Contemporary Rom Com

In this edition of Suzplaining, Suzanne draws connections between the screwball comedies of the 1930s/40s, long believed to be the pinnacle of the romantic comedy, and more contemporary romantic comedies. What is the foundation of the screwball comedy, and how have the rom-coms of the 2000s/10s adapted those elements to our contemporary courtship context? The conversation is a little funny, a little sexy, and a little bit about the patriarchy.

Drink each time Suzanne recommends that Hannah watch Palm Springs.

    Sleepless in Seattle

    Sleepless in Seattle
This week Sleepless in Seattle is on trial. Is it a peaceful nights sleep, or is it a bad case of insomnia? Alex and Dave argue that the film is a timeless classic, with a brilliant and funny script. Gav and Ausy disagree and say that it's not funny or romantic, and has dated very badly. There's a Six Degrees of Separation quiz, impressions of Cary Grant, and a very lively debate. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/183

23: A Rolodex of Suspicious Men

127 Hours with a Film Kid: Brooke is too excited to give Lindsey the illusion of a choice as we break down the Cannes Film Festival lineup, Quentin Tarantino's potential early retirement, the ever-increasing cast of Knives Out 2, and Space Jam 2.

Watch ESPN 30 for 30 presents, The Bunny & The GOAT

When Harry Met Sally...:  We get wildly off track this episode and somehow find it relevant to discuss what to feed ducks (and the jokes/songs surrounding such controversial topics), the perils of dating within the friend group, and the fictitious New York in which New Year's Eve is quiet.

Always Be My Maybe: Brooke and Lindsey detail their love of Keanu Reeves, both in this film and in general before reaffirming that Dave Franco's take from over a year ago on modern romcoms was bad. Plus, we question the seemingly nonexistent rules of "apocalyptic truth or dare".

053 - Brandon Watches “Top Gun” For The First Time!

Sarah made Brandon watch the 80s classic, “Top Gun.” Brandon didn’t hate it like Sarah thought he might, but he did NOT appreciate the 80s synth music, the greased up volleyball scene, or the overdone tonguetactular love scene, and they nearly came to blows when Sarah forced him to sit through the ending credits and Cheap Trick’s “Mighty Wings.”

Apologies for the super late release this week. We have had one HELL of a week for computer issues.

    S03E06: D.O.A.

    S03E06: D.O.A.
It's another thriller, but we aren't thrilled by 1988's D.O.A., featuring Dennis Quaid as a former wunderkind novelist turned tenured professor in a rut. No: really. Is that off-label casting why this confrontationally sweaty film doesn't work? Is it the lack of onscreen chemistry between Quaid and Jane Kaczmarek...AND Jane and Meg Ryan? Does a fetal Robert "T-Bag" Knepper need more to do? New Coke, Silk Stalkings, Wonder Boys, Binder & Binder, and the heartbreak of chronic zydeco all factor into our discussion of a "noir" in which noir wit doesn't factor...at all. S03E04: Innerspace
Both your co-hosts saw Innerspace about a squillion times as kids; does it hold up? Is director Joe Dante secretly a master? Why wasn't the film marketed as a thriller for tweens and teens? Where do '80s movies' ideas about nightclubs come from? And will this 1987 film about a nanoscopic test pilot journeying through Martin Short to greater maturity bring you the highest Quaidosity rating yet? ...Before we answer these questions, we'll finally confront less than half a minute of The Dennissance, so tell the band from Overboard to play "Hail To The Squeef" and settle in for S03E04 of Quaid In Full.
