    55. Peace of Mind and Equanimity: Not Allowing Outside Influences To Ruin Your Inner Peace

Today I am talking about equanimity and not allowing outside events and influences to interfere with your peace of mind.

I do this by inviting you to:

    • do some breath work
    • know your triggers, and
    • challenge your negative thoughts.

I also discuss what equanimity is not. It is not:

    • ignoring your emotions
    • withdrawal from life or from your emotions, or
    • denying reality.

I round off the episode with 3 quick-fire tips on how to build your sense of peace and equanimity:

    1. bring awareness to your thoughts
    2. set boundaries, and
    3. practise acceptance.

    I hope this is helpful!

    How To Stop Negative Self-Talk

    How To Stop Negative Self-Talk

Do you beat yourself up with negative self-talk?

No one can give you a feeling of being worthy. Annie talks about overcoming negative self-talk after a history of abusive relationships. She shifted her self-talk to say, “oh, silly me.” This had a ripple effect in her life, starting with her kids. Changing how she talked to herself was transformative for her and those around her.

How can you be kinder in your relationship with yourself?

Rethinking Perfectionism: what kind are you? Katherine Morgan Schafler

Where are my fellow control freaks?

Such an interesting and way more helpful perspective to rethink and redefine perfectionism. You know when you read a book and it’s so groundbreaking and helpful, you can’t help but tell all your friends, post about it? Well, I was the recipient of essentially being attacked on all sides that I needed to read this award-winning book, The Perfectionists’ Guide to Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. Katherine is a seasoned psychotherapist and former in-house therapist for Google, with a BA in psychology from Berkeley and 2 masters from Columbia University and I’ve got her incredibly refreshing and game-changing approach broken down today. We talk about self-punishment vs. discipline. We talk about adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism and why restoration and resting feels like failure to perfectionists - and my favorite, control vs. power. I really am super excited for you to hear it and can't wait to hear what type of perfectionist are you!

A candid exploration follows, recounting personal struggles and triumphs in handling adversities. The narrative reflects on the journey of building tools and skills meant to foster a calm and collected mindset in challenging situations.

Acknowledging a slip in consistency with mindfulness practices, the host emphasizes the importance of progress over perfection. The episode delves into the complexities of fear and anxiety, recognizing the need to break free from limiting beliefs and thought patterns. The host shares insights into the fight-or-flight response morphing into freeze, an aspect they aim to actively work on and improve.

The narrative explores the power of self-image and the impact of negative self-talk. The host recognizes the need for self-compassion and grace while navigating the journey of growth from a challenging place. Practical tools, such as focused breathing and guided meditation, emerge as valuable in calming the mind in various situations.

The episode concludes with a profound reflection on the perception of danger, emphasizing the role of internal dialogue in shaping our experiences. Life, the host suggests, is a dynamic interplay of perception and response, and the exploration of one's inner self is key to understanding purpose and meaning. Spendthrifts Of Time

    Spendthrifts Of Time

Welcome to another empowering episode of Navigate the Day. Today, we delve into the profound wisdom of Seneca and his timeless insights on the brevity of life in our episode titled "Spendthrifts Of Time."

Seneca provocatively challenges us to ponder why, despite fiercely safeguarding our material possessions, we often allow others to encroach upon our lives, neglecting the precious resource of time. In this thought-provoking episode, we explore the inconsistencies in human behavior and the importance of being mindful of how we allocate our time.

Our journal prompt today encourages introspection on a crucial aspect of life management: Are you saying no enough? Many of us find it challenging to decline requests or set boundaries, inadvertently leading to burnout and resentment. The episode shares personal insights into this struggle and emphasizes the significance of recognizing the value of time in safeguarding our overall well-being.

The host candidly shares experiences from personal and professional spheres, reflecting on the tendency to seek external validation, particularly at work. We explore the consequences of this mindset, such as burnout and a lack of fulfillment, and the importance of setting boundaries to prioritize personal well-being.

The episode delves into a poignant personal realization about the misallocation of time and energy, reflecting on the host's journey to rectify these missteps. Through vulnerability and self-reflection, the host discusses the impact on relationships and the profound regret associated with neglecting connections that were once cherished.

The powerful narrative unfolds further as the host contemplates the need to say no more often, acknowledging the challenges and highlighting the transformative potential of this simple yet profound practice. The narrative shifts to overcoming negative self-talk and focusing on proactive solutions, fostering a mindset that embraces the present moment and seeks positive resolutions to life's challenges.

The episode concludes with a compelling call to action, emphasizing the invaluable nature of time and the importance of using it wisely. The commitment to making positive changes, including saying no more often and practicing mindfulness, sets the tone for a more enjoyable, peaceful, and constructive life journey.

Join us on this transformative episode of Navigate the Day, where we explore the depths of Seneca's wisdom and embark on a journey to reclaim our most valuable resource—time. It's time to navigate life with intention, set boundaries, and embrace the present moment.

    17. Two Tools for Negative Self-Talk

Lately I've had a lot of people tell me, "Wow! You are so nice to your brain!!" But I have not always been so nice to my brain. My go-to default was beating myself up and shaming myself for not doing enough. I reflected on it a bit, and there are two tools in particular that I tend to utilize *a lot* when it comes to this particular form of brain-changing via neuroplasticity—using *new*, different neural networks and breaking away from those default patterns. I invite you to try these out and see how they feel for your brain! And also, if you have no idea what I'm talking about when I refer to neuroplasticity, I give some info about it on here! :)

    Toxic Positivity: Part 1

    Toxic Positivity: Part 1

In the realm of psychology (and in the realm of everyone's Instagram), the concept of toxic positivity has provoked intense debate and polarizing opinions. However, a deeper exploration into scientific literature reveals a thought-provoking paradox: the potential benefits of what some are quick to deem as toxic. In Part 1 of this series, co-hosts Megan Lund and Ryan Marquardt explore the intricacies of relentless positivity, highlighting research and sharing personal stories that challenge popular assumptions. Brace yourself for an intellectual journey that unravels the complex relationship between positivity and well-being, leaving you with a fresh perspective on the emotional, mental, social and physical power of "toxic positivity" (which is a term that probably needs to be rebranded at this point).

Generally defined as an overemphasis on positivity to the point of suppressing negative emotions, this episode highlights the subjective nature of the term. While also recognizing the "negative" effects associated with toxic positivity, Megan and Ryan present thought-provoking counter-arguments and propose new dialogue around the issue. Navigating  various aspects of toxic positivity, Megan and Ryan dish on everything from emotional suppression, spiritual bypassing and spiritual narcissism to the cult of positivity, the impact of toxic positivity on marginalized communities, and the correlation between toxic positivity and capitalism. While acknowledging the concerns and criticisms surrounding this new age buzzword, Megan and Ryan offer compelling insights, drawing from their own experiences and research, to present a more nuanced perspective.

Amidst the discussion, they also highlight the positive effects of what some may label as toxic positivity, such as a longer life expectancy, improved physical health, increased resilience, enhanced creativity and productivity, greater happiness and life satisfaction, improved mental health, more satisfying relationships and beyond. They draw a connection between spirituality and toxic positivity, exploring how new age concepts like The Law of Attraction and The Law of Assumption can be both beneficial and misguided.

Part 1 sets the stage, asking listeners to consider if it's possible to uphold a persistently positive outlook on life without sacrificing authenticity or refusing to engage in the prismatic emotional experiences that come with being human. Approaching the topic with an open-minded passion and a knack for playing devil's advocate, Megan and Ryan seek to create a space where diverse perspectives can be shared and understood. Stay tuned for Part 2, where they will further explore intricate themes related to toxic positivity, reveal eye-opening research that represents all sides of this debate, and offer credible action steps that will help you be more nimble with negative and positive mindsets.

    Being Nicer to Myself

    Being Nicer to Myself

In this episode we discuss ways to be nicer to ourselves.

As always, we start our episode with a check-in. The check-in this week is full of joy and hope; as we welcome springtime. If you want to skip this part, please jump to 8:51.

Victoria shares regrets about staying in relationships too long, allowing the relationship to sour and tarnish the good memories. This leads to a conversation about how to recognize the signs that a relationship is about to sour, and what we can do to evolve and change.  This is also not just about romantic and personal relationships!

Relationships can be with ourselves, our hobbies, nature, finances, work and a lot of other things!

Shadoe shares regrets about her relationship with exercise. Growing up as a person in a large body, she used a lot of negative self-talk to motivate herself.  As she learned more about being nicer to herself, she stopped exercising completely.  We then have a discussion about how to find the joy in exercise vs using exercise as a punishment.

We also talk about Shadoe's experience with an exercise rehabilitation program and the concept of Legacy Goals.

As always, we end our episode with three breaths of letting go.
