MK214: I’m Meryl Streeping You (Warren v. Sanders, 4 C's of Life, Meditation, She Devil, Meryl's Process, Cynthia Enrivo, BAFTA's, Yoga Nidra)

This is a Take Two! Guest Co-Host Shannon Algeo and James's, previous episode was lost to the either, and they had to gather to do it again! Awe the world of podcasting! We re-dive back in to highlights from this week’s debate, Mom & Dad are fighting? What is the beef between Warren and Sanders, or is this just tribalism amongst their supporters taken to extreme degrees on the social webs? Are the media, and Russia at it again? Find out why Lev Parnas has James throwing tables and where he believes we should really be focused and unified. Cynthia Enrivo said “un uh” to the BAFTA’s over POCs being snubbed AGAIN. Also... what is Meryl Streep’s process: we have theories! Could the She Devil herself Roseanne be at the center of it? In the main event, Shannon is going to align our chakra’s highlighting an ancient yoga practice James dubs Adult Napping. We look into why in these times we need to become awake to the things that are sleeping inside of us, how we become what we repeatedly practice (whether that’s stress, or anxiety), Shannon defines trauma, what the Four C’s of Life are, how we contain multitudes, and scientifically, why diversity is beneficial to everyone. We are going to connect to our inner world!

Episode 45: Special Executive Episode w/ Samie Falvey (Imagine Entertainment, ABC Comedy)

Episode 45: Special Executive Episode w/ Samie Falvey (Imagine Entertainment, ABC Comedy)

We’re kicking off 2020 with another true insider look at how television gets made! Andrew sat down with seasoned television executive, Samie Falvey. Samie spent many years as Head of Comedy at ABC, where she played a huge role in developing shows like Black-ish, Fresh Off The Boat and The Goldbergs. She is now on the selling side as Chairman at Imagine Television.  In this interview, you’ll hear her speak openly about running a network comedy department…  what it was like to hear David Caspe pitch Happy Endings… what made the Black-ish pilot so irresistible... the finesse involved with telling a comedy writer their script isn’t funny... and the one plot point she thinks writers should never use in a pilot. A lot of valuable insight for writers from someone with a ton of experience developing and producing comedy for television. Enjoy, and we’ll be back with a new dead pilot next month!

We have a date for our next live show. This one will be at Westside Comedy Theatre on Saturday, February 29th at 5PM-7PM. The ticket link will be up shortly but make sure you block it out on your calendar. We’ll be reading some great pilots!

Can you separate the art from the artist?

Can you separate the art from the artist?

When your favorite actor, musician, or artist does something particularly atrocious, can you  put that aside and still enjoy their art? Today we put several celebrities ripe with naughty behavior on our chopping block as we discuss their art versus their antics. It turns out there are far too many assholes out there to cover them all, but it's safe to say some of your favorites get pulled into our drag session co-hosted by our first special guest and favorite male Lady Waver.  We also shine a light on a lady who is so baller that a statue is being created in her honor and our fave wave this week, who is already a champion for women's issues, ups the ante by pledging to raise $1 million dollars for female candidates running for office in 2020!

Episode 41: Special Executive Episode w/ Jamila Hunter (ABC Network, Khalabo Ink Society)

Episode 41: Special Executive Episode w/ Jamila Hunter (ABC Network, Khalabo Ink Society)

No dead pilot this month, but we have something special instead! On this episode we get to hear a network executive's side of the story. Andrew sat down with television comedy executive, Jamila Hunter. Jamila was the Senior Vice President of ABC Comedy before leaving to head up Kenya Barris's production company at Netflix. In this interview, you'll hear her speak openly about running a network comedy department... What it's like to hear 10 to 12 comedy pitches every single day for months...The number one thing she looks for in a pitch... Embarrassing mistakes writers make and how to avoid them... How the pilot pick-up decisions are actually made... She also reminisces about some of the great pitches she's heard in her career, like Kenya Barris' pitch for Black-ish. Lots of valuable insights for writers, and lots of great perspective for television fans. Enjoy, and we'll be back with a new dead pilot next month!

Episode 8: Video Games Are Bad, Actually

Episode 8: Video Games Are Bad, Actually
Content warnings: Anti-black racism, antisemitism, mentions of the Holocaust, mentions of slavery, domestic violence, references to sexual assault, murder, death, violence, mentions of stereotyped drug abuse, mentions of android body horror, fatphobia, transphobia, and generally just a lot of co-opting of real-life struggles in an allegory about androids gaining freedom and rights. Amanda had the bright idea of exploring problematic media and talking about the ways in which you can like problematic things, but she might have erred upon choosing—and digging deep into researching—the video game *Detroit: Become Human* as her example. Amanda acknowledges the cool parts of the game (and its fandom) but struggles to get past its egregious racism, antisemitism, bad allegory, and troublesome depictions of trauma. A broader conversations is had throughout the episode, with questions like: How *do* you engage with problematic media? Where have Austin and Amanda personally drawn the line and disengaged, and why? And can kinky android fanfic redeem a game?

    1988 - August - Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking

    1988 - August - Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking

    “Nothing’s Shocking” by Jane’s Addiction

Wayne presents this album, “Nothing's Shocking,” — the first studio album by Jane's Addiction. This alternative rock band from Los Angeles had released a self-titled live album in 1987. Perry Farrell was the lead singer and writer for the group. The group would break up in the early 90's over how to split the money. Although tensions in the band would drive the split, their heavy, angry, wall-of-sound approach would lead the way for the grunge music to come a few years later.

We hope you enjoy this heavy hitting feature.

    “Idiots Rule”
This funky rock song with special guest Flea (of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame) on horns starts heavy and drives on through the track.

    “Ocean Size”
This track explains the mentality of a surfer, and the desire to be near the waves. Perry Farrell wrote this at a low point in his life.

    “Had a Dad”
Here is a rare guitar solo at the beginning of the song. This track is about Eric Avery finding out that the person he believed was his biological father was actually his stepfather.

    “Mountain Song”
Not really about a mountain, but about coming down from an acid trip. This song got a little air play at the time, though not as much as “Jane Says.”

    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:

    Theme from “Roseanne”
This was the first run of the show — it launched in August of 1988 and ran through 1977.

    STAFF PICKS:

“Look Out Any Window” by Bruce Hornsby and the Range
Brian shares this single from Hornsby's second studio album. It features complex piano work and progressive lyrics.

“No Smoke without a Fire” by Bad Company
Rob picked this hit from the post-Paul Rodgers days. It features vocalist Brian Howe on this late 80's hit.

“The Only One” by Jimmy Page
This was from Page's lone solo album, and Bruce got into it. It was an obvious hit with Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant's vocal contributions. Jason Bonham is on drums as well

“Let it Roll” by Little Feat
The re-formed Little Feat produced this fast moving and very popular track with a Southern Rock boogie feel. Wayne says, “She's like a smooth stretch of highway.”

    LAUGH TRACK:

“Don’t Worry, be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin
We feature the opposite of an instrumental piece on this acapella track to finish up the session this week. Be Happy, folks!

225 - The IRS Pays The Tea Party, School Shooting Stats Get Slammed, Roseanne Will Die and Fortnite Issues
The IRS came to a $3.5 million settlement with Tea Party groups they purposefully and wilfully held up from getting tax-exempt status. Tony Katz (http://facebook.com/tonykatzradio) thinks this is a good start, but it would be better if Lois Lerner and John Koskinen had to pay personally. The Department of Education had some extremely high numbers about the amount of school shootings in America. When NPR investigated - yes. NPR! - they discovered the numbers are far lower than being reported. The question is why? ABC is going forward with Roseanne without Roseanne, renaming it The Conners. But Tony questions the rumor that the plan is to kill off the Roseanne character. Oh, and playing Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch is nearly impossible!
