Myles Wakeham, The Financially Independent Contrarian

Myles Wakeham, The Financially Independent Contrarian

Myles lives in Scottsdale, AZ and has a fascinating story to tell about going against the herd when it comes to investing. Psychologically this is one of the most difficult things for a human to do, but when you're able to, the rewards can be massive.

We discuss Myles early days in corporate America. What it was like moving to Los Angeles from Australia, then returning to Australia 6 years later, then deciding to finally return to the United States for good.

We discuss the pitfalls of real estate investing, what to do and what not to do. How you can build a rental property portfolio from scratch. The proper way to view debt and leverage, and common mistakes many rookie investors make.

Myles suffered from Covid last summer. He describes what that was like. After hearing his story, it really makes sense why the elderly or already-sick can be especially vulnerable to this virus.

We discuss what to expect in the economy once Covid lockdowns are finally over; where to invest your money, time and energy right now so you can profit when things finally get back to normal.

"I'm really different.  Not in a bad way, but I will challenge your audience to question social norms and think outside of the box in order for them to break free of the statistics of being a wage slave and never retiring.  I'm living proof that it can easily be done and I love to share my story." – Myles Wakeham

Don't Be Afraid to Channel Your Inner Unicorn! World-Class Social Media Marketing with Megan Shallow

BNL Media Consulting was born out of a love for all things local and the impact small businesses had on making Founder and CEO Megan Shallow feel a part of her community.

Megan was always frustrated with the way marketing agencies handled social media accounts OR ignored them completely. Time and time again, she witnessed marketers take advantage of businesses by making promises they didn’t even know how to keep and profiting off of their client's lack of knowledge in the social media space.

Today, Megan works closely with businesses that she believes need to be seen, heard, and recognized for the value they are bringing to our world. Every business that BNL works with not only becomes a part of the local conversation but is welcomed into an amazing network
of business owners and entrepreneurs, who are working together to change the way social media is used.

BNL work with clients to generate authentic content, positive messaging and foster honest connections with your community and customer base. Creating valuable content and connection – which we LOVE doing.

Going from Zero to Hero as a Salesman with Shawn Channell

Going from Zero to Hero as a Salesman with Shawn Channell

Shawn Channell spent a decade struggling to create a career in sales. First as a Realtor, then multiple stints selling cars, and even as a door- to-door salesperson he faced thousands of rejections, disappointing results, and years of barely making enough money to survive.
At that pivotal moment when he was ready to walk away and pursue a different career path something clicked. The approach he had been taking was backward. It was all about his product, his service, and his company. It didn’t necessarily align with what the customer wanted; their challenges, objectives, and goals.

As a result, Strategic Communication was born. A sales methodology focused on uncovering what the client’s objectives are, strategically aligning their needs with your value, and ensuring both parties are clear on the reasons to partner together.

For the past fifteen years, Shawn has been coaching, developing, and training salespeople and sales leaders to produce results. His salespeople have become six-figure earners and some of the top professionals in their sales positions. Many have gone on to become top-level sales leaders. The sales leaders he partners with acquire a strategic approach to lead, coach, and develop their sales teams on a completely new level. Their teams consistently hit goals and grow their sales results.

Strategic Communication isn’t designed to replace your previous sales experience or methodology. Its power lies in adding a fresh perspective in a market saturated with the same traditional sales approaches. Consider it another tool to add to your arsenal that will increase the power of your communication with clients and drive new results.

Blake Harper proves every day that nothing is impossible in life!

Blake Harper proves every day that nothing is impossible in life!

While snowmobiling in the Greystokes near Kelowna in March of 2002, an accident resulted in Blake suffering a broken back, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

From the very start he refused to let this life altering disability break his spirit or stop him from living his life to the absolute fullest.  On September 17th 2002, just six months to the day of his injury, Blake started pushing himself to swim across Okanagan Lake and has consistently "gone big" ever since.

Blake began power lifting for Canada, competing in Las Vegas at the WABDL, breaking the national bench press record for his weight class. He also competed in Australia at the Pan Pacific Paralympics where he placed 2nd overall.  He then competed in Greece at the Worlds and was ranked in the top 25 of the world. Blake altered the PADI course by becoming the very first paraplegic in North America to be a certified diving instructor. He has tackled wakeboarding, mountain biking (with a specialized hand cycle), quading, and sit skiing. He is one of only a handful of people to do a backflip on a sit ski.  These are just  a few of his "hobbies" to date. Blake’s vocabulary does not include the word “can’t”.

While doing research on Stem Cell Treatments, Blake found a Doctor in India that was having some success with paralyzed patients.  In January of 2012 Blake traveled to India for nine weeks to begin receiving these treatments.  Within three weeks, Blake began to move his right leg and ten days later his left leg. These were the first movements he had experienced in 10 years! Once back in Kelowna, Blake dedicated himself to a six days a week regimen of physiotherapy and rehab to regain as much function and sensation as possible. Seven months later in October, after continuing to see improvements, Blake traveled back to India for a second round of treatments.  These trips included daily physical therapy, and Stem Cell Treatments.

Blake inspires everyone he meets with his positive outlook and determination. He has done speaking engagements motivating and educating schools, nursing students, old age homes, and business executives.

Personal Transformation: 5 Continents, 8 Countries with Bas Lebesque

Personal Transformation: 5 Continents, 8 Countries with Bas Lebesque

With our new technology we were able to conduct this interview with crystal clear sound and a 9 hour time difference! Bas Lebesque is an Executive Life Coach currently living in the Netherlands where he was born and raised. He has lived and worked in 8 countries over 5 continents and has some fascinating stories to tell. In his own words:

After a short career in hospitality and then 2 careers in financial markets, as trader and as freelance consultant. I had to take a bold action to stop doing what I was not enjoying. Looking back, I realised that when I started my second career as a consultant in 2010 I also started my own health physical and mental journey.

I always was active, running and playing competitive squash. In 2010 I started CrossFit and as I took my physical activities to the next level, I had to become more aware of my nutrition, I also started drinking less alcohol and I stopped drinking in February 2017 completely. This felt so natural and it was the best thing I have ever done in my life.

The last part of my health journey was a mental one. Questioning every single belief, I had. This helped me clean up some past issues and taught me how to honour the now. Daily meditation is great for me to create space and the mindset I desire. In wintertime I sit in open water for cold water therapy, 3 times a week. The journey to my best version will never end, but I am happier with myself than ever before. The work of Byron Katie, Dr Joe Dispenza and Wim Hof have become a part of my life.

Along the road, I have been helped, challenged and inspired by many people. I have worked with personal trainers and several coaches on different subjects. I am now so passionate about this, that I want to create more life balance, energy and clarity in the workspace by helping senior and executive leaders, that they will be the best versions of themselves.

Snazzy Cat Capers with Deanna Kent and Neil Hoosen

Snazzy Cat Capers with Deanna Kent and Neil Hoosen

Deanna Kent spent her childhood making up treasure maps for her family (there are several hundred pennies still buried across the prairies of Western Canada). Realizing that treasure mapping mixed well with story-crafting, she made that her path. After teaching English for a decade, she moved on to work as a writer for the Walt Disney Company. For almost ten years, she worked at the Kelowna, Canada studio, first as a narrative designer for a growing interactive kids’ world. At Club Penguin, which grew into the number one MMO for kids, from 2008-2012, for a captivated audience of seven-twelve year olds, she helped to build and execute the big-picture story and sub-brands where their audience grew to over 200 million registered penguins in 190 countries. After five years, she switched roles and worked her way up to Sr. Writer for Brand and Marketing for the larger Disney Interactive division, where she was privileged to work with high performing teams and world-class franchises like Lucas, Pixar, Muppets, and more. More than anything, Deanna loves cross-discipline collaboration, and creating engaging, immersive experiences. When she grows up, she wants to be Edna Mode.

Neil Hooson was drawing on the back of his dad’s work papers since he could hold a pencil. After graduating, he took a detour through college where he earned a mathematics degree, but quickly found his way back to art through animation. He has worked as an illustrator, character designer, motion designer, and animator, for brands like Saatchi & Saatchi, Family Channel, Teletoon and more, but decided his passion was for creating story-rich content for kids and kids at heart. For almost a decade at the Walt Disney Company, Neil worked to bring story to life with Club Penguin, the number one MMO for kids. From 2008-2014, for a growing audience of seven-twelve year olds, Neil collaborated to build and execute the big-picture story and sub-brands where their audience grew to over over 200 million registered penguins in 190 countries. As part of the story and vis dev team, his work on one of their most popular sub-brands, Card-Jitsu, grew it into a multi-layered experience that boasted rich story, online games, and real-world ties. In 2014, Neil moved into an Art Director role for Brand and Marketing for the Walt Disney Company Interactive division, where he worked with franchises such as Pixar, Star Wars, and more. He loves story, and to experiment with various art styles and techniques to bring ideas and characters to life. Currently he’s Art Director for Yeti Farm Creative, an animation studio in Kelowna.

Deanna Kent and Neil Hooson worked together at the Walt Disney Company for almost a decade, first on Club Penguin—a virtual world for kids, and then in brand and marketing with a variety of franchises like Lucas, Pixar, Tron, and more. They're passionate about experience design (digital and physical) and have recently worked with a talented team to create story and art for the new Vancouver Teck Acute Care Centre for kids. These days, Neil works as an Art Director at Yeti Farm and Deanna works as a Writer and Marketing Manager at Carebook. At night, they work on their own wild, creative ideas. Now that the Snazzy Cat Capers books 1-3 are handed over to their publisher, they’re dreaming up a few new projects. Please find them on Twitter @Deannaandneil or on the Snazzy Cat website.

Learning how to stand out in a marvelous but sometimes unaccepting world with Kendra McFarland

Learning how to stand out in a marvelous but sometimes unaccepting world with Kendra McFarland

Kendra grew-up on a hilly, luscious, rural Manitoba acreage 20 miles away from any town or village.

Being the youngest of 3 sisters in a supportive family, Kendra has always had lots of love around her. Naturally being bubbly and enthusiastic, the spotlight has always landed on her creating a sparkle so bright that it would never be dimmed!

Kendra has always enjoyed doing her own thing. She wasn’t heavily influenced by her peers, even in elementary school, which instantly made her an outcast. But in the end, every little girl wants and needs friends at school but being so free spirited and not caring what others thought, it was hard for her to find many friends to gel with. Even the friends she did make sometimes turned on her to side with the popular kids. Eventually, this lead to her parents offering for her to switch schools which ultimately meant going into another small community.

With Kendra’s sparkle shining brightly, she grew a sense of confidence, independence, and strength-of-self at a young age. Kendra loved the energy around singing and being in the spotlight so much that she would climb up onto stage at her older sisters’ Christmas concerts! Yet, again, stealing the spotlight from her sisters. From Grade 1 until... well, now, she has always been in choirs. She is a natural leader in her choirs because of her confidence, experience, and training from that tender age of 6. Singing in many local and provincial competitions and fundraising events, she grew a sense of leadership and even more confidence! She studied voice, piano (classical and jazz), saxophone (also and baritone), and enjoys jamming on her bass guitar around inspiring rock musicians. Through her choral experience, she has travelled across Canada twice and to Italy and China. One of the highlights was singing in a mass choir of about 900 people at China’s Pre-Olympic Festival with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra! Another highlight was being accepted to sing in the National Youth Choir as Manitoba’s only Soprano at the age of 17 even though there were other sopranos working toward Master degrees who also auditioned that same year. Keener, much? Yuppers!

Throughout her life, she has been shunned by strangers and questioned if she is sincerely happy by some of her closest friends. This positivity and confidence Kendra exudes works beautifully as a filter. Only the best, truest people are attracted to her and the others tend to turn away because they have a hard time relating and understanding how someone can be so happy.

After high school, Kendra completed college for Office Administration. The office thing wasn’t her jam. Then she started a career in herbalism while working at a traditional loose tea store for a few years which moved her into health food stores instantly. Her world of nutrition and health opened-up ten-fold! She worked at 3 health food stores and ran her own health company for many years. Advocating health and self-care will always be part of who she is!
