#115 Don’t Say Anything at all (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

    en-usFebruary 13, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Hopeful signs despite challengesSpring-like days and a growing movement against authoritarianism offer reasons for hope, while it's important to distinguish the 'good guys' from the 'bad' in these times

Despite the challenges of the current situation, including a late podcast release and an unexpected break next week, there are reasons to be hopeful. We've made it more than halfway through winter and are witnessing the days getting longer and experiencing beautiful spring-like days. Additionally, there's a growing movement against authoritarianism, as seen in the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa, which is inspiring people around the world. While it's important to be aware of who the "good guys" are, it's also clear who they aren't, as recent events have made that abundantly clear. The podcast will continue to be available on YouTube and Odysee, and the community is encouraged to ask questions during the second hour and consider joining the Patreon for engaging conversations.

    • Emphasizing the importance of critical thinking in educationCritical thinking and questioning are essential for deeper understanding and informed decision making in education, challenging traditional one-way information systems and public health officials' absolute truths.

Education should not be a one-way street of information intake, but rather an interactive and questioning process. The conversation touched upon the limitations of traditional educational systems and public health officials who present information as absolute truths. The importance of critical thinking and questioning was emphasized, as it leads to a deeper understanding of the world and the ability to make informed decisions. The discussion also touched upon the concept of MDM (Mass Disinformation Manifesto) and how it can be applied to education. The idea of education as a form of occupation, where individuals come together to express their grievances and demand change, was also explored. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of active participation and critical thinking in the learning process.

    • Finding problem-solving web developers and highlighting sponsors Sole and NedLook for web developers who can adapt to specific project needs and check out Sole for customizable footbeds and Ned for effective CBD products with discounts for Dark Horse listeners

When looking for a web developer, it's essential to find someone who can problem-solve and adapt to specific requests, rather than forcing projects into pre-existing modes. Sponsors Sole and Ned were highlighted in the podcast. Sole is a sustainable footwear company that creates affordable, customizable footbeds to improve foot comfort. They offer a 50% discount for first-time customers through their website. Ned is a CBD company that stands out in a saturated market with its full-spectrum hemp oil products, which are USDA certified organic and extracted from hemp grown in Colorado. Their destress blend, which contains CBD and CBG, is particularly effective in combating anxiety and stress. Dark Horse listeners can get 15% off Ned products using the code "dark horse" on their website. Both sponsors provide high-quality, effective solutions in their respective industries.

Nausea, while often a useful signal in ancient times, can be debilitating in modern life due to causes such as travel sickness, anxiety, and side effects from medication. Reliefband, a clinically proven, drug-free anti-nausea wristband, offers relief and prevention for various types of nausea with zero side effects. Developed over 20 years ago, it is the only over-the-counter wearable device used in hospitals and oncology clinics. A listener's testimonial highlights its effectiveness. If you're experiencing nausea, consider trying Reliefband, especially during travel or due to anxiety. Reliefband makes a great gift and is currently offering an exclusive discount for Dark Horse listeners. Meanwhile, the ongoing debate about vaccine mandates has created a two-tiered society, with some people having full access to societal offerings while others are excluded. This issue, while not the most alarming, is a concerning development that warrants attention.

    • Two-tiered society and disdain for the working classThose in power's disconnect and disdain for the working class through vaccine mandates and societal response reveals a potential two-tiered society, highlighting the importance of recognizing the true value and contributions of the working class.

The current vaccine mandates and the societal response to those opposing them reveals a growing disconnect and disdain for the working class by those in power. The speaker expresses concern over the potential for a two-tiered society and the hypocrisy of those in power, who have previously hailed heroes but now demonize those standing up for their rights. The speaker also criticizes the lack of understanding and awareness from the educated elite, using an example of a Harvard professor's suggestion to damage trucks as evidence of this disconnect. The speaker emphasizes the importance of recognizing this disdain and understanding the true value and contributions of the working class.

    • The disconnect between academia and the real worldAcademia's overreliance on higher education and narrow focus on specialized fields, coupled with elitist attitudes and lack of real-world knowledge, creates a disconnect between students and their education, with consequences felt in the classroom and society.

The overreliance on higher education and the narrow focus on specialized fields, driven by the limited knowledge and understanding of some academics, has contributed to a shrinking and less relevant version of higher education. Many academics fail to meet the basic requirements of knowing something real to communicate and believing in the humanity of their students. This disconnect between academia and the real world, coupled with the elitist attitudes of some academics and institutions, creates a disconnect between students and their education. This disconnect was evident during the vaccine campaign, where public health authorities made claims about vaccine safety that were not based on solid evidence. The consequences of this disconnect can be felt by students in the classroom and by the working class in society. It is essential to question the assumptions and motivations behind educational institutions and to strive for a more holistic and humanistic approach to education.

    • The Power of Desperation during the PandemicDesperation can lead people to believe ineffective measures are the solution, creating a divide between those who comply and those who don't, similar to societal biases.

During the pandemic, many people were told that following certain measures would help return their lives to normal. However, it was later revealed that these measures were not as effective as promised, and people had also grown desperate to return to their normal lives. This desperation led to a belief that these measures were the solution, despite initial doubts and skepticism. This situation created a divide between those who had complied and those who hadn't, making it difficult for the latter group to be accepted in certain places. This dynamic is similar to societal biases, where those on the winning end may not be as aware or concerned about the issue as those on the losing end. Overall, the pandemic situation highlighted the power of desperation and the influence it can have on people's beliefs and actions.

    • Misinformation as a National Security ThreatMisinformation can be intentionally or unintentionally spread, leading to societal discord, undermined trust, and potential violence. Stay informed and separate fact from fiction to maintain stability.

The threat landscape has evolved, and the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation (misinformation being false information without intent to harm) is now considered a significant threat to national security. This can be used by terrorists to sow discord, undermine trust, and potentially inspire acts of violence. The line between unintentional misinformation and intentional disinformation can be blurry, and it's essential to stay informed about the latest definitions and classifications. It's crucial to be aware of the potential consequences of sharing incorrect information, even if it was unintentional. The ongoing challenge is to separate fact from fiction and promote accurate information to maintain trust and stability in society.

    • Understanding Disinformation and MalinformationBe aware of intentional misinformation (disinformation) and factual misinformation out of context (malinformation). Strive for accuracy and context in communication to avoid being a target.

Disinformation is intentionally misleading information, which can come from various sources including advertising, comedy, and even nonhuman organisms. Malinformation, on the other hand, is based on fact but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate. The line between these two can be blurry, and the definition of terrorism in the context of disinformation can be subjective, making anyone a potential target. It's essential to be aware of the potential for disinformation and malinformation and to strive for accuracy and context in communication.

    • Techniques for manipulating information in teachingMisinformation, disinformation, and malinformation can challenge students' thinking and encourage critical analysis when used with good intentions. Be aware of assumptions and broaden perspectives through exposure to failed thinking.

Information manipulation, whether intentional or not, is a common occurrence in various environments, including teaching. The techniques used for misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation can be employed to challenge students' thinking and encourage critical analysis. Misinformation involves being wrong and not being corrected, disinformation is leading students down a wrong path while hinting it's the right way, and malinformation is using facts out of context to manipulate. While these techniques may seem harmful, they can be beneficial when used with good intentions, such as making students more immune to manipulation in the future. It's essential to remember that our experiences and assumptions about what is normal can be misleading, and we must expose ourselves to failed thinking multiple times to broaden our perspectives.

    • Understanding the subtler forms of tyrannyRecognize tyranny's early signs: silencing, slandering, and the suppression of dissenting voices. Value factual information and context, and be cautious of preemptively debunking information.

Identifying tyranny in its early stages requires a deep understanding of its various forms and a recognition of the slippery slope towards censorship and suppression of dissenting voices. The discussion emphasized that tyranny doesn't always present itself with obvious signs like goose-stepping or skull helmets. Instead, it can manifest as the silencing and slandering of certain groups in society. Additionally, the importance of factual information and context was highlighted, as well as the potential danger of preemptively debunking or "prebunking" information, which can limit the free exchange of ideas and stifle open discourse. Furthermore, the discussion revealed that this issue is not just about government sites, but also about the need for critical thinking and vigilance against the spread of misinformation in all forms.

    • Government's Power to Label Truth-Tellers as TerroristsThe government's partnership with the private sector to combat misinformation has led to concerning developments, such as labeling truth-tellers as terrorists and the potential for infringing on free speech and information dissemination.

The line between information dissemination and terrorism is becoming increasingly blurred, as seen in the partnership between the government and private sector to combat misinformation. This partnership, which some critics label as fascistic, has led to graphic novels depicting those spreading facts as terrorists. While it may seem extreme, the government's power to label truth-tellers as terrorists is a concerning development. In 2011, this became a reality with the inclusion of sections 1021 and 1022 in the National Defense Authorization Act, signed by President Obama. These sections gave the government the power to indefinitely detain individuals, including US citizens, suspected of providing material support to terrorist organizations, even if they have not engaged in violent acts. The implications of this are significant and could potentially stifle free speech and the dissemination of information. It's essential to be aware of these developments and the potential consequences they may have on our society.

    • Civil liberties under attack in the USThe NDAA of 2011 and government actions have led to indefinite detention without charge or trial for those labeled as terrorists, eroding civil liberties in the US.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2011 and subsequent actions by the government's terrorism branch have significantly eroded civil liberties in the US, creating a dangerous and confusing situation where citizens can be indefinitely detained without charge or trial if labeled as terrorists. This is a much more serious issue than the vaccination mandates, which create two tiers of society but do not strip individuals of their constitutional rights. The vast majority of people are unaware of these infringements on their civil liberties, making the situation even more concerning for the future of American democracy.

    • NDAA's detention provisions raise civil liberties concernsThe NDAA of 2012 allows for indefinite detention without charge or trial, potentially leading to a slippery slope towards authoritarianism, and contradicts fundamental American values and international law.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012, which was signed into law in 2011, contains provisions that allow for indefinite detention of individuals, both foreign and domestic, without charge or trial. This has raised serious concerns about civil liberties and the potential for abuse of power. The Act has been challenged in court, but the executive branch's interpretation of its detention provisions allows for the declaration of someone as a terrorist, their disappearance, and detention without explanation or evidence presented. This lack of transparency and accountability is a major concern, as it creates a situation where individuals can effectively disappear without any recourse or explanation to their families or the public. The NDAA's detention provisions are inconsistent with fundamental American values and international law, and their implementation could lead to a slippery slope towards authoritarianism.

    • Erosion of civil liberties and government powerThe government's response to Chris Hedges' lawsuit highlights the need for consistent defense of individual rights against expanding government power. Dangerous precedents, like conflating factual info with 'malinformation' and declaring constitutional rights for terrorists, threaten individual freedoms.

The erosion of civil liberties and the expansion of government power, as seen in the case of Chris Hedges suing the federal government for the right to see evidence against him, highlights the importance of consistent defense of individual rights. The response from the government, denying the existence of the issue rather than acknowledging the rights in question, underscores the need for vigilance against the dismantling of once-honorable organizations like the ACLU. The conflation of factual information with "malinformation" and the declaration of constitutional rights for terrorists is a dangerous precedent, leading to a loss of individual freedoms. To avoid falling under this definition of "mis, dis, and malinformation," individuals may choose to limit their speech, but recognizing and opposing these trends is crucial. The parallel moves towards restrictive policies, such as vaccine mandates in Canada, serve as reminders of the gravity of the situation and the need for collective action.

    • The Rise of the Turnkey Totalitarian StateCanada and US events reveal the structures of a potential totalitarian state, where constitutional rights could become privileges, and lower classes push back in protests. Understand the value of all work and stand up for rights before it's too late.

We are witnessing the erection of a turnkey totalitarian state, as revealed by events in Canada and the US. This state may not have fully turned the key yet, but the structures are in place, and our constitutional rights could be revoked at any time, making them privileges rather than rights. This situation is a wake-up call for the lower classes, who have suffered significant losses and are now pushing back against the elites. The current protests in Canada, such as those at Coutts, Ambassador Bridge, and Ottawa, are a manifestation of this class war. David Graeber's "Bullshit Jobs" highlights the importance of understanding the value of all types of work, including those that seem unnecessary but provide essential functions and paychecks for many people. Overall, we must recognize the danger of the turnkey totalitarian state and the importance of standing up for our rights before it's too late.

    • Misunderstanding the Value of Working Class LaborHistorically, working class labor has been reduced to factory work, but most jobs involve caring for people and things. Recent protests highlight the power and resilience of the working class, but they're often mislabeled as insurrections against democracy.

The working class has been misrepresented throughout history, often being reduced to factory workers and overlooked roles such as caretakers, nurses, and teachers. This narrow view ignores the reality that most working class labor involves caring for people and things, rather than just producing tangible goods. This misunderstanding was exemplified in a 2014 London Underground transit strike, where some argued that the threatened workers' jobs were unnecessary under communism or capitalism. However, it's crucial to understand the true value and importance of these roles, especially during current protests where people are standing up for their rights and freedoms. The media's response to these grassroots movements has been to label them as insurrections against democracy, but the reality is that they are a testament to the power and resilience of the working class. It's essential to recognize the diversity and significance of working class labor and to listen to the voices of those who are speaking out.

    • Left vs Right: A New Political LandscapeThe traditional left-right political divide is becoming outdated as the left's focus on progress and the right's resistance to change are blurred due to governments prioritizing economic interests over public welfare.

The traditional left-right political distinction may no longer be the most useful way to understand current social and political dynamics. The left, historically associated with progress and making things better for the public, is now being identified with authoritarianism and resistance to change, while the right, traditionally associated with resistance to progress, is aligning with the workers' protests against mandates. This shift can be explained by the fact that governments have been captured by economic interests, leading to a situation where what could be good governance is actually being used against the people. The workers, who are fighting for their rights, are being labeled as right-wing, but this heuristic oversimplifies the situation. Instead, it's important to recognize that the left's bias is towards progress, while the right's bias is towards resistance to change due to the perceived risk of unintended consequences. The current situation highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of political dynamics and the importance of recognizing that the public institutions, which are supposed to serve the people, have been captured and are no longer acting in their best interests.

    • Understanding the Complexities of the Political LandscapeThe political landscape is a tension between progress and preservation, with significant advancements in workers' rights, children's rights, women's rights, and civil rights at risk of being dismantled, while some institutions show an antipathy towards the founders' ideas. Progressives should focus on new problems instead of becoming a regressive force.

The political landscape is characterized by a constant tension between progress and preservation. Conservatives aim to protect past gains and resist unintended consequences, while liberals push for progress and solution-making. However, in the 20th century, significant advancements in areas like workers' rights, children's rights, women's rights, and civil rights were made. Now, some branches of liberalism are dismantling these gains, leading conservatives to defend them. The founders of America were radicals who advocated for good governance, but some institutions today show an antipathy towards their ideas. The real mystery lies with the progressives, who should be focusing on new problems but have instead become a regressive force, offering redistribution to those feeling shafted in exchange for leaving the rent-seeking elites alone. The left and right labels are not enough to fully understand the complexities of the situation, and it's essential to look deeper into the puzzle. Glenn Greenwald recognizes this, but Noam Chomsky does not. Ultimately, finding meaningful music can help us understand the depths of human potential and our capacity to be there for one another.

    • The Emotional Response to Beethoven's Music and MisinformationBe aware of the potential for emotional responses to be manipulated or misconstrued. Engage in positive actions to promote understanding and combat misinformation.

The emotional response to Beethoven's music could be considered a form of misinformation or disinformation, as it can elicit strong responses without the use of language. However, it's important to note that this discussion was not about Beethoven himself, but rather the potential interpretation of his music in this context. The speaker also touched upon the idea that human interactions and emotions may not be fully covered by current definitions of terrorism and information manipulation, potentially leading to expansive definitions and concerning implications. Overall, the key takeaway is the importance of being aware of the potential for emotional responses to be manipulated or misconstrued, and the need for ongoing dialogue and understanding in these complex issues. Additionally, the speaker encouraged listeners to engage in positive actions, such as prebunking, being good to loved ones, eating well, and getting outside.

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.
