    en-usFebruary 27, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • New research reveals spring extinction of non-avian dinosaursRecent findings suggest the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs happened in spring, around 65 million years ago, based on fossil evidence and growth rates.

New research suggests the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs occurred in the spring season, around 65 million years ago. This discovery, which adds to our understanding of one of the most significant events in Earth's history, is based on evidence related to growth rates and isotopes found in fossilized bones. The exact year of this event remains uncertain, but the seasonal difference is intriguing. Additionally, the term "chaff" was discussed in the context of both science and military technology, referring to irrelevant data or distractions. The Hunter Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century, a book that offers clear logical thinking, is continuing to gain popularity with translations into various languages, including French, due in the spring.

    • Web developer job response and Canadian protests100+ emails for web developer role, Canadian protests result in Emergencies Act invocation but deemed a 'Potemkin victory', Sundays offers superior dog food with human-grade, air-dried formula, convenient for pet owners.

There has been a significant response to the call for a web developer, with over 100 emails received. Meanwhile, in other news, the Canadian trucker convoy protests against mandates and government overreach have seen Trudeau invoke the Emergencies Act and send in the police, only to later rescind it. The speaker believes this was a "Potemkin victory," with the government appearing to have more power than they actually do due to the growing number of people opposing their actions. In the world of sponsors, Sundays was discussed as a superior option to regular dog food, with their human-grade, air-dried formula providing better nutrition and taste for dogs, and even being suitable for humans in a pinch. Sundays' food is easy to prepare and does not require refrigeration or cleanup, making it a convenient choice for pet owners. The speaker's enthusiasm for Sundays was evident when comparing it to Maddie's previous food, with her showing greater excitement when offered Sundays.

    • Promoting Health and Well-Being for Pets and FarmersSundays offers discounted dog food for pet health, MOINK supports American farmers with meat subscriptions, and Vivobarefoot shoes promote natural foot function for foot health.

Making your dog happy and healthy can be achieved through Sundays, a company offering 35% off your first order of specially formulated dog food. Meanwhile, MOINK, a meat subscription box, supports American farmers by delivering grass-fed and finished meats directly to consumers. Lastly, Vivobarefoot offers shoes designed for natural foot function, contributing to foot health and strength. Despite seemingly unrelated topics, these sponsors share a common thread in promoting health and well-being, whether for pets or farmers. The 20th century's return with the reminder of rules and realities in today's world serves as a backdrop to these discussions.

    • Understanding the risks of new technology in the bodyNew mRNA vaccines may pose risks, and ongoing scientific inquiry is crucial to deepen our understanding of these risks, including possible links between myocarditis and the immune response to vaccines.

The introduction of new technology into the human body, in this case, mRNA vaccines, may pose risks that we are not yet fully aware of. This is based on an understanding of biology, particularly the predicament that viruses put multicellular creatures like us in, and the way our ancestors have evolved to fend off viruses. The speaker encourages the audience to play the role of students, asking questions and challenging assumptions to deepen understanding. The discussion revolves around the hypothesis that myocarditis, a sometimes effect of mRNA vaccinations, may be linked to the immune response to the vaccines. This is not the only explanation, but one possible mechanism. The speaker acknowledges that SARS CoV 2 infection can also cause myocarditis and invites further discussion on this point. The overall message is that scientific understanding is an ongoing process, and the role of students is crucial in pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

    • Viruses and Prions: Distinct PathogensViruses and prions differ from other pathogens as they rely on borrowing host biology and have no independent functioning. COVID-19 and mRNA vaccines may cause myocarditis through distinct mechanisms.

Viruses, unlike bacteria or other pathogens, function by borrowing the biological machinery of the organisms they infect. This makes it difficult for our bodies to distinguish them and mount an effective defense. The speaker also mentioned that there is a category of even more stripped-down pathogens called prion diseases, which are caused by the contagious misfolding of proteins. The speaker emphasized that viruses and prions are distinct from other pathogens due to their lack of biological functioning and their ability to commandeer the biology of the organisms they infect. The speaker also mentioned that COVID-19 and mRNA vaccines may cause inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) through different means. The speaker did not claim that this hypothesis is unique, but rather that they arrived at it independently after discussing it with others.

    • Understanding the immune system's challenge with self vs non-self recognitionThe immune system identifies threats based on self-recognition, making it difficult to distinguish between our cells and virus-infected cells, leading to potential misidentifications and allergic reactions.

Our immune system identifies and distinguishes "self" from "non-self" during development, ignoring the former and reacting to the latter as potential threats. Viruses, as non-living entities with a creature-like objective, can infiltrate our cells and manipulate them to produce more viruses, making them indistinguishable from our own cells. This creates a challenge for our immune system, which must learn to identify and target these "enemy-occupied" cells. The immune system's response to this threat is based on self-recognition, allowing it to react to anything that is not recognized as self, even if it has not encountered that specific threat before. However, this system can also malfunction, leading to allergic reactions or misidentifying harmless substances as threats. Understanding this complex interplay between self and non-self recognition is crucial in developing effective strategies for combating viral infections and other immune system challenges.

    • Immune system recognizes infected cells as foreign, triggering responseMRNA vaccines introduce antigen, triggering immune response against self and non-self proteins, a normal response

Our immune system identifies and targets virally infected cells by recognizing the hybrid of self and non-self markers on their surface. These cells, which have been commandeered by the virus, are effectively "volunteering" for death to prevent further harm to the organism. mRNA vaccines work by introducing a single, stripped-down message encoding for a specific antigen into the body. This message is protected by lipid nanoparticles, allowing it to bypass the immune system's defenses and enter cells, where it is translated into the antigen. However, a cell producing the antigen from the vaccine will appear to the immune system as if it has been infected, displaying a mixture of self and non-self proteins. This could potentially trigger an immune response against the vaccinated individual. It's important to note that the immune system's recognition of these cells is not a failure of the vaccine, but rather a normal response to the presence of foreign antigens.

    • Immune system mistakes vaccine-infected cells for virally infected onesThe immune system's response to mRNA vaccines can lead to the destruction of cells, particularly in the heart, where repair capacity is limited, potentially creating harmful growths.

The immune system's response to mRNA vaccines, which triggers an immune reaction against cells that have taken up the vaccine, is a misinterpretation of the situation. The immune system mistakes these cells for virally infected ones and responds by destroying them. However, these cells are only temporarily compromised and will eventually return to their normal function. This issue is particularly significant when it comes to the heart, which has limited repair capacity. The danger of creating a potentially harmful growth of cells in the heart is so high that the system has effectively turned off its repair mechanism. This is a hypothesis, and it remains to be seen if it holds true. Overall, the discussion highlights the complexities of the immune system and the challenges of developing vaccines that can effectively bypass its defenses while minimizing unwanted reactions.

    • MRNA vaccines can trigger inflammation in the heartMRNA vaccines may spread beyond the injection site, increasing the risk of inflammation in the heart, potentially leading to myocarditis

MRNA vaccines, while designed to deliver protective proteins to the body, can unintentionally be perceived as foreign by the immune system and trigger inflammation, particularly in the heart. The heart, due to its limited capacity for self-repair and crucial role in the body, is more susceptible to damage from this inflammatory response. This damage can lead to myocarditis, a condition where the heart muscle becomes inflamed, which can result in serious health consequences. The vaccines were intended to stay local to the site of injection, but they have been found to spread throughout the body, increasing the risk of unintended effects, especially when they reach the heart. This lack of predictability and specificity in the vaccine's distribution is a concern, as it can lead to damage in an organ as vital as the heart.

    • Potential heart risks from mRNA vaccinesThe mRNA vaccines may have unintended consequences, specifically affecting the heart, due to their indiscriminate targeting mechanism. Further research is needed to minimize these risks, and prioritize transparency and thorough safety testing to ensure vaccine safety.

The current mRNA vaccines may have unintended consequences, specifically affecting the heart, due to their indiscriminate targeting mechanism. The heart's susceptibility to uptake of the vaccine components might lead to dead tissue and scarring, potentially reducing heart capacity. Further research is needed to determine the best ways to minimize these risks, such as considering different injection sites or optimizing the circulatory system's impact on vaccine distribution. Additionally, the discussion raised concerns about the safety testing and transparency of the vaccine development process. The public's trust has been eroded due to perceived misinformation and skipped safety tests. Moving forward, it's crucial to prioritize transparency and thorough safety testing to ensure the best possible outcomes for those receiving the vaccines.

    • The importance of a balanced approach to addressing climate changeRushing to implement climate change solutions without proper scientific evidence and democratic processes can lead to harmful consequences. Natural solutions and understanding trade-offs are important.

The rush to implement solutions, especially those related to climate change, without proper scientific evidence and democratic processes, can lead to potentially harmful consequences. Using the example of genetically engineered trees, the speaker argues that the urgency to address climate change should not come at the expense of ignoring potential risks or ethical considerations. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of natural solutions and the need to understand the trade-offs of different approaches. The speaker criticizes the lack of journalistic integrity in reporting on such issues and the financial incentives that can influence research outcomes. Overall, the discussion highlights the importance of a balanced and evidence-based approach to addressing complex issues like climate change.

    • Economic system turns leaders into salespeople, manipulating emotionsDuring uncertain times, acknowledge unknowns and engage in thorough cost-benefit analyses before accepting claims about new proposals

Our economic system has transformed those in positions of authority into salespeople, who manipulate our emotions and fears to sell us their narratives, often disregarding the potential risks and trade-offs. This was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when claims about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines were made without sufficient evidence. The complexity of systems means that no one can truly know all the effects of novel proposals, so acknowledging the unknowns and engaging in thorough cost-benefit analyses is crucial. A recent Swedish study added to the ongoing debate about mRNA vaccines by showing that they can be reverse transcribed into DNA in liver cells, but it did not determine if this DNA gets integrated into the genome. This underscores the importance of acknowledging the limitations of our knowledge and the need for ongoing research and critical thinking.

    • Science and sales intersect with unintended consequencesFocusing on sales can overlook larger implications of scientific advancements, potentially leading to unintended consequences and negative effects on ecosystems.

The intersection of science and sales can lead to unintended consequences and complex systems that may not function as intended. The discussion revolved around the use of gene editing in vaccines and transgenic trees as examples. While proponents argue that these technologies do not alter the nuclear genome and are not gene therapy, critics caution about potential unintended consequences and the impact on ecosystems. The transgenic tree example illustrates this, as the goal is to create trees that absorb heavy metals to store carbon longer, but the potential negative effects on ecosystems and the impossibility of containing the trees' spread are overlooked. This highlights the importance of considering the larger implications of scientific advancements beyond their intended benefits. The mental disorder called sales, where the focus is on convincing customers of the perceived benefits rather than the actual impact, can lead to oversimplified analyses and the disregard of potential negative consequences.

    • Science's struggle for truth amidst sales and validationThe scientific community can prioritize sales and validation over truth, leading to a harmonized but potentially inaccurate consensus. Committed scientists face marginalization and criticism for upholding the scientific method.

The scientific community can sometimes prioritize sales and validation over truth, leading to a harmonized but potentially inaccurate consensus. This issue is exacerbated when external forces, like pharmaceutical companies, manipulate the system for their benefit. As a result, a small number of committed scientists are left to uphold the scientific method, often facing marginalization and criticism. This discussion also touches upon the situation in Ukraine, where the speaker acknowledges their limited knowledge but raises concerns about the potential for similar manipulations and consensus-building in geopolitical contexts.

    • Criticizing accurate predictions without acknowledging underlying causesIgnoring historical and cultural context when critiquing predictions can hinder learning and understanding of reality. Only those who have also made accurate predictions have the right to critique others.

Making accurate predictions about world events does not give others the right to dismiss those predictions as being made for the wrong reasons. Constantine Kisson, who has family on both sides of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, has been criticized for his predictions of the current geopolitical situation. However, his understanding of the deep historical and cultural issues at play is not being acknowledged. Instead, some are trying to discredit him by suggesting that he got it right by chance. This is a dangerous trend, as it can stifle important perspectives and hinder our ability to learn from the past. Furthermore, the philosophy of science teaches us that only those who have also made accurate predictions have the right to critique others. Ignoring this principle can lead to destructive criticism and hinder our understanding of reality.

    • Predictive power matters more than credentialsListen to those who can accurately predict future events, regardless of their background or recognition, to make informed decisions and avoid potential conflicts.

The capability to predict future events is more important than credentials or positions when it comes to making informed decisions. The speaker emphasizes the importance of listening to those who have demonstrated predictive power, even if they lack formal education or recognition. He also argues that the West's lack of leadership and broadcasting of weakness has allowed other powerful nations to take advantage of the situation, leading to potential global conflicts. The speaker also shares a poem by Wendell Berry, "The Peace of Wild Things," as a reminder to find peace and rest in the face of despair for the world. The underlying message is that we should focus on finding opportunities for improvement and growth, rather than dwelling on things that don't offer new possibilities.

    • Embrace the complexity of life and improve the systemInstead of destroying the system in pursuit of perfection, focus on improving it and making it fairer. Be wary of external influences and quick profits, and invest in the future.

While our system may not be perfect and has its unfairness, it has been remarkably productive and fairer than previous systems. Destroying it in pursuit of perfection could lead to unintended consequences and potential threats from external forces. Instead, we should focus on improving the system and making it fairer. Additionally, there may be external influences contributing to our perceived level of stupidity, and we should be wary of quick profits and easy solutions. Instead, we should embrace the unknown, love the world, and work for nothing. Invest in the future, plant sequoias, and embrace the complexity of life.

    • Appreciating the interconnectedness of all living beingsValue long-term perspective, prioritize future generations, and stay true to our beliefs despite external pressures.

We should value the long-term perspective and the interconnectedness of all living beings, as exemplified in a poetic call to appreciate the role of the forest, women, and the passage of time. The poem encourages us to prioritize the well-being of future generations and to resist being swayed by short-term gains or external pressures. The author also emphasizes the importance of staying true to our beliefs, even when faced with opposition or criticism. Additionally, the listener Matthew's letter expresses gratitude for the persistence of Heather and Brett in questioning the dominant narratives and standing by their convictions. Overall, this conversation highlights the importance of staying grounded in our values and long-term vision, while also being open to new perspectives and learning from our experiences.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

Susie is trying to convince Sarah to convert to Judaism. Sarah found out about a 2-year-old who is going through puberty because he had contact with his dad's medication. We learn whether emotions caused by music are the same throughout the world and we look at a map of music emotions. We learn a new theory on why T-rexes have those teeny tiny arms, and it's very disturbing. Sarah shames Susie for not remembering random dinosaur facts. Scott's Short Reviews - Invasion of The Dinosaurs

The Doctor and Sarah Jane arrive on Earth in the midst of the chaos and begin investigating the cause of temporal disturbances that make dinosaurs appear on the streets of London. They discover that a group of scientists, led by the renegade scientist Professor Whitaker, are behind the scheme. They are using a device called the "time reversal" to bring dinosaurs to the present day, with the intention of "cleansing" the Earth by erasing the technological advancements that they believe have led to its decline.

Join a very tired Scott as he takes a video diary approach to reviewing this story and what will he make of those dinosaurs?
