    • Understanding the Power of Metaphors in Everyday Life and MarketingMetaphors shape our language and daily life, from temperature metaphors to marketing language. Armour's colostrum is described as a 'seal' guarding against inflammation and toxins, while American Hartford Gold offers a 'financial fortress' against economic instability. Both metaphors and actions can lead to significant benefits.

Metaphors are deeply embedded in our language and daily life, often in ways we don't even realize. For example, we use metaphors like "higher temperatures are hotter" without thinking about it. Our second sponsor, Armour, uses metaphors in their marketing language, describing their colostrum as a "seal that guards against inflammation and everyday toxins." The importance of metaphors extends to our health, as colostrum, a first food for mammals, serves vital functions in protecting and strengthening our mucosal barriers. Armour's colostrum, with its cold chain biopotent technology, is a potent and bioavailable source of nutrients that can help build back our modern-day weakened immune systems. Our final sponsor, American Hartford Gold, offers a more literal takeaway - protecting your financial investments with precious metals during uncertain economic times. In a metaphorical sense, they help you build a "fortress" against inflation and economic instability. So whether it's through metaphors or tangible products, the takeaway is that understanding the power of language and taking action to protect ourselves can lead to significant benefits. To learn more about Armour's colostrum and get a special discount, visit tryarmra.com/darkhorse. And for those looking to secure their financial future, contact American Hartford Gold at (800) 462-0071.

    • Personal Resolutions for 2024: Making it, Spelling, and BettingThe speaker aims to make it to the next year, learn to spell a complex word, and take a calculated risk in her resolutions for 2024.

The speaker in this discussion is sharing her personal resolutions for the year 2024, which include making it to the next year, learning to spell the word "fascism," and losing £200 through a bet. The first resolution might seem simple, but given the challenges of the current year, it's a significant goal. The second resolution is more concrete and involves mastering the spelling of a frequently used yet complex word. The third resolution involves taking a risk and potentially losing money. The speaker also mentions that she struggles with the spelling of "fascism," despite its importance and the frequency with which she encounters it. Overall, the speaker's resolutions reflect a desire to challenge herself, improve her skills, and take calculated risks. The discussion also touches on the importance of sharing resolutions to increase accountability and the challenge of mastering difficult words.

    • Oregon Health Authority Encourages Adults to Get Vaccinated Against Respiratory VirusesOnly 25% of eligible Oregonians aged 18 and above have received the newest COVID-19 vaccine, 8% have received the flu shot, and 3% have received the RSV vaccine. The health authority urges individuals to contact their healthcare provider to get vaccinated.

The Oregon Health Authority is strongly encouraging adults to get vaccinated against respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV, emphasizing that it's never too late to protect yourself and those around you. However, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination coverage among eligible Oregonians aged 18 and above is low, with only 25% having received the newest COVID-19 vaccine, 8% having received the flu shot, and 3% having received the RSV vaccine. The Oregon Health Authority is urging individuals to contact their health plan, healthcare provider, county public health clinic, or a federally qualified health center, or call 211 to get vaccinated. Despite the importance of vaccination, the CDC report indicates that a significant portion of adults remain unsure about getting vaccinated against these viruses.

    • CDC report reveals intentions towards influenza, COVID-19, and RSV vaccinesDespite ambiguous findings due to self-reported data and inconsistent age ranges, the CDC report suggests strong provider recommendations could increase vaccination coverage for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

The CDC report reveals that approximately 27% of adults aged 18-60 and 41% of adults aged 18-plus, and 53% of adults aged 60-plus expressed intentions to be vaccinated or were unsure about influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, respectively. However, the study's validity is questionable due to its reliance on self-reported data and inconsistent age ranges for each disease. Despite the ambiguity, the report suggests that strong provider recommendations and offers could potentially increase vaccination coverage for all three diseases. The study's findings may be relevant to future discussions on vaccine uptake and public health strategies. However, the study's methodology and lack of clear claims raise concerns about its reliability.

    • Report on Oregon vaccination rates questioned for shaky data and ambiguous natureA recent report on Oregon vaccination rates was called into question due to its pseudo quantitative and ambiguous nature, with significant discrepancies between reported and actual numbers

A recent report claiming to provide insights into vaccination rates in the United States, specifically in Oregon, has been called into question due to its pseudo quantitative and ambiguous nature. The report, which categorized adults into five groups based on their vaccination status, was found to be based on shaky data and did not exclude those who had already been vaccinated, making the numbers meaningless. The numbers reported by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) based on this report were also found to be significantly off from the actual numbers. The report's creators acted as if the categories were discrete and could be assigned integer values, but the numbers were not actually quantitative. The report's inconsistencies and inaccuracies cast doubt on its credibility and usefulness.

    • Questionable public health data on vaccination ratesInconsistencies in reporting from health authorities and ambiguous categorization of vaccination intentions complicate efforts to assess vaccine hesitancy and allocate resources for outreach.

The reliability and clarity of public health data regarding vaccination rates can be questionable. The discussion touched upon the inconsistencies in reporting from the Oregon Health Authority and the CDC, as well as the ambiguity in categorizing vaccination intentions in a scientific publication. These issues can make it challenging to accurately assess the number of people who are vaccine hesitant or undecided and the resources required to convince them to get vaccinated. Additionally, there are concerns about potential manipulation and coercion of medical professionals to promote vaccinations, which could further complicate the situation. Overall, it's crucial to approach vaccination data with a critical eye and prioritize transparency and clarity to ensure effective public health strategies.

    • Social pressure can lead to inflated vaccine numbersSocial pressure can result in inaccurate vaccine data, potentially misguiding healthcare decisions and disregarding individuals' true willingness and safety concerns.

The act of calling individuals and asking if they have received their COVID-19 vaccine can lead to an inflated number of people reporting that they have gotten vaccinated, even if they have not. This is due to social pressure and the desire to present oneself in a positive light. This manipulation of data can then be used to influence doctors and push for more vaccinations, potentially disregarding the actual willingness and safety concerns of individuals. It's important to acknowledge the psychological factors at play and the potential risks associated with excessive pressure and misrepresentation of vaccination status.

    • The Power of NarrativesBe aware of narratives and question their validity, while recognizing the importance of context.

We are constantly being influenced and manipulated by narratives, whether they come from media, food industries, or even academic institutions. These narratives can shape our perceptions, values, and beliefs, sometimes in ways that are not beneficial or truthful. The speaker uses the metaphor of a low-lying island and a mysterious boat to illustrate how we are often unaware of what lies beneath the surface. In the case of the Harvard president resignation, the speaker emphasizes that while the individuals involved may have been morally flawed, their answer about context in the hypothetical scenario was correct. The key takeaway is to be aware of the narratives around us and to question their validity, while also recognizing the importance of context.

    • Controversy over academic principlesThe need for fair and consistent application of university principles was highlighted in the controversy surrounding Claudine Gay's statement on Nazi imagery, but her scholarship later revealed instances of plagiarism, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high ethical standards in academia.

The context of academic discussions and the application of principles should be consistent, regardless of the subject matter. The controversy surrounding Claudine Gay's statement about the use of Nazi imagery in academic research highlighted a double standard and the need for a fair and consistent application of university principles. However, following her controversial statement, scrutiny on her scholarship revealed instances of plagiarism. The academic community faces challenges with intellectual property protection, relying on the honor system instead of trademarks, copyrights, and patents. The hierarchical nature of academia allows those at the top to wield significant power and potentially take from others with little consequence. The incident underscores the importance of maintaining high ethical standards and consistent application of principles in academia.

    • The Role and Differences of Trademarks, Patents, and Copyrights in AcademiaThe speaker discusses the importance of intellectual property in academia, raises concerns about plagiarism, and criticizes universities for hiring academics based on race rather than merit.

The discussion revolves around the importance of intellectual property in academia, specifically the difference between trademarks, patents, and copyrights. The speaker also highlights an instance of alleged plagiarism by a university president and the ease with which she was able to copyright her work despite suspected theft of phraseology. The speaker argues that this incident is not an isolated case, and universities may be filled with academics who produce lazy, inconsistent, and pilfered work. The speaker expresses concern about the damage caused to race relations by individuals who wield their race as a means to advance in academia despite producing subpar scholarship. The speaker also criticizes Harvard for hiring such individuals for superficial reasons rather than for their academic merit. The incident came to light during a congressional hearing, and the president in question had a short tenure of only six months.

    • Lack of scrutiny towards powerful individuals in academia and politicsUnchecked power can lead to unqualified individuals in positions, manipulating information for profit, and societal collapse.

The lack of scrutiny towards those in positions of power, be it in academia or politics, can lead to the hiring and continuance of individuals who are not qualified for the job. The case of a premier academic being exposed as a fraud and the current U.S. President's questionable qualifications highlight this issue. The system's collapse, where those who should have the necessary skills are absent or unneeded, can have deeper implications, such as the manipulation of information in media and academia for profit. It's crucial to challenge the status quo and demand accountability from those in power to ensure the integrity of institutions and maintain the functioning of our society.

    • Concerns over academic fraud and prioritization of agreed-upon conclusionsThe speaker raises concerns about academic fraud, particularly those who have risen to power, and the prioritization of agreed-upon conclusions over open exploration for the truth. They criticize the lack of scrutiny in certain fields and call for a more critical examination of academic discourse.

Academia, as it currently exists, may prioritize agreed-upon conclusions over open exploration for the truth. The speaker expresses concern over the prevalence of fraudulent scholars in academia, particularly those who have risen to power through the use of their immutable characteristics. They argue that the system is designed to produce such frauds and that the recent scandal involving Claudine Gay is only a small part of the problem. The speaker also criticizes the lack of scrutiny applied to fields considered to be above reproach, such as the hard sciences. The academic community's response to the revelation of fraud has been limited, and many institutions continue to promote controversial narratives, such as the safety and effectiveness of COVID vaccines and the urgency of addressing global climate change. The speaker calls for a more critical examination of the truth behind these conclusions and the role of institutions in shaping the academic discourse.

    • Power and public embarrassment can lead to scrutiny and consequences, even if unrelated to the initial issuePower and embarrassment can create entrenched systems that continue to exist despite flaws, potentially stifling innovation and authentic learning

Power and public embarrassment can make individuals vulnerable, leading to scrutiny and potentially serious consequences, even if the initial reason for the scrutiny is unrelated. This was the case with Claudine Gay at Harvard, who was scrutinized for plagiarism after her public embarrassment during a congressional hearing, even though the questioning had nothing to do with her scholarship. This situation highlights the importance of institutions, such as universities, and how they can become entrenched systems that continue to exist despite their flaws. These systems can become jobs programs for people who may not contribute significantly to truth seeking or innovation. The education system, from kindergarten to the highest levels, can also become a charade where individuals are rewarded for going through the motions without truly exploring new ideas or pushing boundaries. Ultimately, it's important to remember that we are capable of being innovative and creative, and we should strive for a more authentic and meaningful approach to learning and truth seeking.

    • Living in a Complex World with Unforeseen ConsequencesStay informed and proactive in addressing natural and societal challenges to prevent catastrophic consequences.

We are living in a complex and interconnected world where threats, both natural and man-made, can have significant impacts on our lives, often without us even being aware of them. The solar storm discussed, though the largest in six years, did not cause major damage because it was not directly facing the Earth. However, the potential for devastating consequences from such events exists, and we must prepare for them. Similarly, societal issues like the hollowing out of the system require our attention, even if they are not currently causing immediate harm. Ignoring these issues could lead to catastrophic consequences when they do manifest. Therefore, it's crucial to stay informed and proactive in addressing both natural and societal challenges.

    • The importance of protecting critical infrastructure and seeking truthFailing to invest in infrastructure protection and acknowledge vulnerabilities can lead to severe consequences, as seen in the power grid example. Empowering those responsible and prioritizing transparency, competence, and functionality are key to mitigating risks and ensuring a safer future.

The lack of investment in protecting critical infrastructure and seeking truth, even when it's difficult or unpopular, puts humanity at risk. The discussion highlighted the example of the power grid and the potential for severe consequences if proper precautions are not taken. The speakers emphasized the importance of empowering those responsible for protecting us and allowing them to make tough decisions, even if it means acknowledging vulnerabilities and potential failures. The unwillingness to face these realities, driven by economic or political advantages, can lead to dangerous situations. The speakers also suggested that there may be forces at play that want to keep certain truths hidden, and the COVID-19 pandemic served as a trial run for revealing their capacity to manipulate information and control the public. Ultimately, it's crucial to prioritize transparency, competence, and functionality across all systems and institutions to mitigate risks and ensure a safer future for humanity.

    • Powerful individuals or groups may ignore global risks for local interestsThose in power may not prioritize global risks, leading to potential blindness to catastrophic events

There are individuals and groups in positions of power who may be working to maintain their superiority and prevent disruptions to their status quo, even if it means ignoring potential threats to civilization as a whole. This can lead to a dangerous state where local actions to protect individual interests result in a global blindness to larger risks, such as solar storms or other catastrophic events. It's important to consider the possibility that those in power may not always have the best interests of the greater good in mind and to remain vigilant against potential threats, even if they seem abstract or distant.

    • Navigating Complexities: Acknowledging Challenges, Staying Informed, and Working TogetherAcknowledge global challenges, stay informed, and work together with leadership, platforms, and audience to mitigate risks and reach higher peaks.

The world is facing numerous threats, both natural and man-made, which can be overwhelming for individuals and societies to address. However, ignoring these dangers can lead to short-term gains but long-term risks. It is crucial for leadership, particularly a sober Congress, a courageous president, and an independent judiciary, to take action to mitigate these threats. The adaptive valley, where progress requires going through difficult times, can be a dark place, but it's necessary to reach higher peaks. People are becoming more aware, and it might be the point where they are finally taking action. Additionally, platforms like Discord, Locals, and Substack offer opportunities for engagement and access to exclusive content. Sponsors like Helix, Armrah, and American Hartford Gold support the production of insightful content. Lastly, the audience plays a vital role in spreading the word by subscribing, sharing, and engaging in conversations. In essence, it's essential to acknowledge the challenges, stay informed, and work together to navigate the complexities of the world. Remember, be good to the ones you love, eat good food, and get outside. Happy New Year!

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

Ep. 30: The False Choice: Move Fast or Think Deeply

There is a false dichotomy between thinking deeply and moving fast. We are often presented with these as mutually exclusive choices and both have real advantages. But there is a way to do both at the same time--and it is a life changing insight (at least, it was for me).
