#50: Stop Being Shocked & Live Not By Lies (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

    en-usOctober 17, 2020
What does Barry Weiss argue about the liberal worldview?
How does helicopter parenting affect children's resilience?
What role does the family play in child development?
How can parents foster open communication with their children?
What risks does new ideology pose to free society?

    • Liberalism under Threat: Objective Truth vs Group IdentityWe must defend individual freedom, equality under law, and pluralism against the new ideology that rejects objective truth and suppresses dissenting voices, as emphasized by Barry Weiss, Rod Dreher, and Solzhenitsyn.

American liberalism, as we have known it, is under threat. According to Barry Weiss in his recent essay "Stop Being Shocked," and as Rod Dreher explores in his new book "Live Not by Lies," the liberal worldview that values individual freedom, equality under the law, and pluralism is being challenged by a new ideology. This ideology, as described by Weiss, rejects the notion of objective truth and instead emphasizes group identity and the suppression of dissenting voices. Both authors argue that this shift poses a significant risk to the foundations of a free society. As Weinstein and Hygge discuss on the Dark Horse Podcast, these ideas resonate with Solzhenitsyn's essay "Live Not by Lies," which emphasizes the importance of moral integrity and resisting the pressures of a conformist society. In essence, the takeaway is that we must be vigilant in defending the liberal values that have shaped American society and resist the forces that seek to undermine them.

    • Jews and Christians finding common ground in preserving valuesJews and Christians, despite their differences, are uniting around the need to preserve family, privacy, and community in the face of a collapsing social order.

American Jews and Christians, despite their differences, find common ground in their concerns about the collapsing social order and the need to preserve family, privacy, and community. Bari Weiss, a Jewish author, warns about the dangers of submitting to ever-changing loyalty tests and the potential consequences for Jews when the center no longer holds. Rod Dreher, a Christian author, advocates for these same values in his book "Live Not by Lies," which he sees as a manual for dissidents. The resonance between their perspectives stems from their shared recognition of the erosion of basic principles and the need to rebuild from the ground up. This alliance between Jews and Christians, while not a traditional one, is significant in the context of the current social and political climate. Furthermore, when considering their historical relationship, it becomes clear that Christianity emerged from Judaism, and vice versa, creating a complex interconnectedness between the two faiths. This evolutionary perspective sheds light on the deeper significance of their alliance and the potential for renewed understanding and cooperation.

    • Recognizing the Threats to Liberal Ideals from TotalitarianismStaying vigilant to totalitarianism requires recognizing its similarities to past regimes, drawing on diverse experiences, and resisting harmful ideologies

Our cultural borrowing of liberal ideals from various religious traditions, including Christianity and Judaism, is under threat from creeping totalitarianism. People who have lived under totalitarian regimes are warning us of the similarities they see in the West today. Both the speakers, Drier and the essayist Barry Weiss, emphasize the importance of recognizing this and staying vigilant. The speakers also share their personal experiences growing up in secular homes with exposure to different religious traditions and how these experiences shaped their perspectives. They discuss how various influences, from literature to personal relationships, helped them resist ideologies that might have otherwise led them down a harmful path. In essence, the speakers argue that a diverse range of experiences and perspectives is crucial for individuals to develop the ability to resist totalitarian ideologies and maintain their personal values.

    • Maintaining traditions offers immunity to societal challengesJewish culture's resilience through preserving traditions teaches us to remain vigilant and uphold values, even during adversity, to prevent societal erosion and dangerous consequences.

The complex relationship between faith and tradition in Jewish culture may hold valuable lessons for other societies. Jews have persisted through numerous challenges by maintaining their traditions, even when their faith is questioned. This approach may offer immunity to the erosion of societal structures and prevent the dangerous consequences of "runaway liberalism." In Dreyer's book, "Live Not by Lies," the story of Father Tomislav Poglagen, a Jesuit priest who warned his community of the dangers of communism, illustrates the importance of heeding prophetic warnings and preserving traditions. Despite the materialistic allure of the liberal democratic west, Father Kolakovic, a Croatian priest in hiding, recognized the greater threat of Soviet totalitarianism and urged his community to prepare. His actions demonstrate the importance of remaining vigilant and upholding traditions, even in the face of adversity.

    • Understanding the Historical and Modern Contexts of AntifascismHistorically, antifascism was a response to totalitarian regimes. Modernly, it's used by some destructively, while others use it as a disguise for soft totalitarianism. The meaning can be elastic, leading to misuse and manipulation.

The historical context of the term "antifascism" and its current usage hold significant differences. Father Kolkovic, an antifascist during World War II, prepared Slovak Catholics for Soviet rule despite knowing the Soviets' promises of freedom were false. In contrast, some modern groups calling themselves "Antifa" engage in destructive behavior while cloaking themselves in the antifascist label. Anarchism, which is not inherently antifascist, has adopted this mantle. Soft totalitarianism, as Drier describes it, uses the guise of helping and healing to suppress dissent. The elastic nature of terms like "racism" and "antiracism" can make individuals susceptible to being labeled and manipulated. The distinction between historical and modern antifascism is crucial to understanding the complexities of these concepts and the potential consequences of their misuse.

    • The Threat to Democracy Comes from WithinNon-state actors exert control through social pressure and censorship, undermining democratic values. Corporations are imposing guidelines and limiting speech, with potential government follow-through. Critical examination and accountability are necessary.

The threat to democracy and the republic is not just coming from external forces, but also from within, particularly on university campuses, in corporate boardrooms, and other domains nominally on the left. This "soft totalitarianism" is defined by non-state actors exerting control through social pressure and censorship, rather than through state power. While the state may seem weak and corrupt, it's important not to change the definition of governance to only include non-state actors, as the British monarchy is an example of a ceremonial apparatus that doesn't truly govern. The public will has little influence on policy, which often serves the interests of those with real power. Corporations, now "going woke," are imposing guidelines and limiting speech, with the government potentially following suit. It's crucial to critically examine these trends and hold those in power accountable to upholding democratic values.

    • Protecting Individual Expression and Gathering: A Historical PerspectiveHistorically, individual expression and gathering were protected to safeguard against state control, but concerns arise as non-state entities may surpass state power, leading to 'soft totalitarianism' and a loss of communal values and accountability.

The founders of our society placed great importance on protecting the ability for individuals to gather, speak, and express opinions, and this was primarily to safeguard against potential state control. However, as society has evolved, there are growing concerns that the power of non-state entities, such as technology and ideologies, may surpass that of the state, making these protections inadequate. The term "soft totalitarianism" is used to describe this emerging form of control, which is different from traditional totalitarianism as it doesn't rely on military force. Dreyer's characterization of it as "soft totalitarianism" and "therapeutic totalitarianism" is particularly apt, as it involves a hatred of dissenters from a utopian ideology that is disguised as helping and healing. This ideology values individual experimentation over communal principles and transcendent order, which can be dangerous as it undermines the importance of family, community, and accountability to a greater good. This trend towards valuing individualism over communal values and transcendent principles is evident in the modern academy, where critical race theory and intersectionality have influenced various fields, including the natural sciences, and where only one perspective is often allowed. This shift raises concerns about the potential loss of communal values and the importance of accountability to a greater good.

    • Understanding the destructive nature of communismIgnorance of history and lack of belief in a higher power can make individuals vulnerable to dangerous ideologies like communism, and it's crucial to remember the past and its consequences.

The lack of a belief in a higher power or a strong, shared narrative can leave individuals vulnerable to falling into dangerous ideologies, such as communism. The speaker reflects on how they heard about communism at a younger age and now appreciate the reasons for its destructive nature. However, they also acknowledge the importance of understanding history and the dangers of forgetting or erasing it. The speaker references the book "Malankara" and its exploration of the importance of remembering the past and the consequences of erasing it. They also discuss the idea that without a belief in something larger than themselves, individuals may be more susceptible to harmful ideologies. The speaker then shares a personal story of traveling across Madagascar and the importance of shared experiences and narratives in building a fair and excellent world.

    • A young boy and his family teach speakers about living with purposeDespite lacking religious beliefs, the speakers found purpose through honorable principles, questioning if God's absence leads to chaos or alternative sources of meaning.

During a long and challenging journey in Madagascar, the speakers befriended a young boy and ultimately stayed with his family. This experience led them to reflect on the importance of having a sense of purpose in life, even without religious beliefs. The hosts expressed concern about the speakers' lack of faith and asked how they lived good lives. The speakers responded by sharing that they had constructed their own sense of higher purpose based on honorable principles. The discussion raises the question of whether the absence of religion leads to chaos and destruction, or if people can find alternative sources of meaning and guidance. The speakers suggest that it is possible to live good lives based on shared principles, and that the necessity of God as an explanation for the universe may become increasingly remote as human understanding grows.

    • Religion and traditions foster resilient communitiesReligion and traditions teach preservation of beliefs and values, foster responsibility, and strengthen family bonds, contributing to resilient communities.

Religion and traditions play a crucial role in building resilient communities by teaching people how to preserve their beliefs and values, even during times of instability. This approach fosters a sense of responsibility towards each other and the preservation of individual dignity within community. Family, as the bedrock of civilization, is a primary focus, with love and shared responsibility being the foundation of family relationships. The modern ideology, on the other hand, often lacks this focus on connection and responsibility, instead promoting a divisive and hateful stance. Vaclav Havel, a leader in the Czech resistance to communism, emphasized the importance of nurturing and protecting families, emphasizing the law of love and shared responsibility over individual freedom from responsibility. Overall, the discussions highlight the importance of responsibility, connection, and community in fostering resilient and thriving societies.

    • The importance and stability of family and lineageFamily is a fundamental organizing principle for human societies, shaped by belief structures and modernity. Attempts to dissolve or collectivize families are unstable and may require violence and totalitarianism. Trusting and nurturing families and valuing community are essential for strong and resilient societies.

The evolutionary perspective sheds light on the importance and stability of family and lineage, which is a fundamental organizing principle for human societies. Family, as a social construct, has been shaped by ancient belief structures and modernity, and it serves as a metaphorical anchor for our genetic lineage and social roles. Attempts to dissolve or collectivize families, as advocated by certain ideologies, are evolutionarily unstable and may require violence and totalitarianism to maintain. Family and community are interconnected, and both have played crucial roles in human history and continue to be essential for individual and societal well-being. Trusting and nurturing our families, as well as valuing community beyond the nuclear family unit, are key to building strong and resilient societies.

    • The Importance of Honest Communication in ParentingHonest communication between parents and children fosters trust, courage, and a safe space for challenging false ideas. Speaking truthfully helps children develop strong convictions and navigate the complexities of the world.

Open and honest communication between parents and children is crucial for raising strong, compassionate, and brilliant young adults. The story of Thomas Saly, a Hungarian boy who grew up hearing the truth from his father despite the risks, illustrates the importance of trusting children to be reasonable and honest. This kind of familial relationship allows for candor and provides a safe space to challenge false ideas in an era where deceit is prevalent. The nuclear family is essential in disrupting attempts to weaken the bonds between people and to maintain a healthy perspective on societal norms. By speaking truthfully and openly to children, parents can help them develop the courage of their convictions and navigate the complexities of the world.

    • The importance of family attachment for child developmentHelicopter parenting can hinder resilience while neglect can leave children insecure. A strong family attachment helps children build confidence and navigate the world.

The role of the family in providing a sense of security and attachment for children is crucial for their development into functional adults. The discussion highlights how modern parenting styles, such as helicopter parenting and neglect, can hinder this process. Helicopter parenting, which shields children from risks, can create young adults who lack resilience and struggle to navigate the world. Conversely, neglecting children's needs for attachment can leave them feeling insecure and more susceptible to external influences. Dictatorships have historically targeted the family to weaken individuals and make them more malleable. In today's society, schools can serve a similar role, promoting ideologies that contradict the family unit. By fostering a strong attachment with their children, parents can help them build the confidence and courage to face challenges and become self-sufficient adults. The discussion underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy family dynamic and allowing children to develop a strong sense of security and attachment.

    • Inconsistent parenting and societal pressures can lead to a lack of honesty and moral responsibilityChildren need safety and autonomy in their early years, followed by gradual exposure to risks as they grow older. Societal pressures can also lead to a lack of honesty and moral responsibility, making it essential to question motivations and consider our true goals.

There are families and communities where children are denied safety and autonomy in their early years, only to be overprotected and shielded from risks as they grow older. This inconsistent parenting style, as discussed in the context of the book "Live Not by Lies," can lead to a dangerous lack of honesty and moral responsibility. Similarly, in larger societal contexts, people may surrender their truth and honesty due to misplaced idealism, a desire to destroy, or hatred towards others. It's essential to question the motivations behind actions and consider what we're truly fighting for. In the realm of education, people are being hobbled by a lack of self-motivation and being told what to do without understanding the value or purpose. This can lead to a reliance on external validation and a disregard for truth. Ultimately, it's crucial to strive for honesty, self-motivation, and a clear understanding of the values and motivations driving our actions.

    • The 'woke revolution' exploits dissatisfaction and offers false solutions, leading to helplessnessStay true to yourself, build communities, and prioritize real-life interactions to resist helplessness and foster hope

The current cultural climate, as exemplified by the "woke revolution," exploits people's dissatisfaction and resentment towards those perceived as more capable, offering false solutions and cultivating a sense of helplessness. This dynamic, rooted in a lack of community and shared experiences, can lead individuals to hand over their tools of resistance and become foot soldiers in a battle that may not distribute the promised spoils fairly. It's crucial for individuals to stay true to themselves, their conscience, and form communities with like-minded people to foster hope and resist the allure of exponential self-inflicted helplessness. Additionally, the loss of shared visceral experiences due to digital communication and lockdowns further exacerbates the issue, making it essential to prioritize real-life interactions and understand their importance in building strong bonds and communities.

    • Forming Meaningful Relationships and Communities Amidst Social DistancingDespite social distancing and modern romantic trends, it's vital to prioritize forming deep connections and communities to promote stability and shared experiences. Privacy concerns with technology should be addressed, but human interaction remains essential.

The current societal trends of social distancing and individualism are hindering the creation of shared communities and histories. People are not forming deep connections and relationships, leading to potential instability and a lack of shared experiences. Modern sensibilities about romance and family have also contributed to this issue, as partnerships are becoming more like friendships than family relationships. The urgency to build communities and networks is essential, as seen in the call for resistance from an 80-year-old anti-communist activist. However, privacy is also a concern, as technology like smart speakers and social media can invade our personal spaces and shape our identities as consumers. To counteract these trends, it's crucial to prioritize forming meaningful relationships and communities, even if it means stepping away from technology and engaging in face-to-face interactions.

    • The Risks of Consumer Culture Stripping Individuals of Their Human AgencyWe must recognize our debt to the world and aim to contribute value, rather than building a life around curating brands and identities. Addressing societal issues like education, development, and pharmaceuticals is crucial to prevent negative impacts on future generations.

Our current consumer culture, driven by technology and societal trends, risks stripping individuals of their human agency. This issue is not new, but it is gaining momentum in unexpected places. The speaker expresses concern that we have not recognized the debt we owe to the world by consuming resources and that we should aim to contribute value in return. He criticizes the notion of building a life around curating brands and identities, and instead encourages productivity and solving the root causes of societal issues like education, development, and pharmaceuticals. The speaker warns that even if we address the immediate problems, such as woke ideology and totalitarianism, we still have a large population that has been negatively impacted by past mistakes. It is our collective obligation to address these issues and prevent them from coming back to haunt us. The speaker invites listeners to join their communities for further discussions and to consider supporting their work.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

How The First Police Went From Gangsters, To An Army For The Rich

When U.S. police departments didn't evolve out of slave patrols, they tended to form out of a desire to protect the property of the wealthy. In practice, this meant beating, murdering and arresting people who didn't want to work 12 hour days until they died.
